The Ibibio people in Southern Nigeria have for ages been using different plants and their parts to treat malaria and other fevers even in the face of available conventional drugs. The use of Setaria megaphylla (S. megaphylla) has been done without much documentation[1]. S. megaphylla is an erect perennial broad-leafed bristle grass, canelike with very coarse and robust roots mostly found along rivers, areas with plenty of moisture and in tropical and subtropical Africa with high rainfall[2], e.g. Nigeria. In Southern Nigeria, Ibibio Tribe in Akwa Ibom State used it for treatment of malaria, pain, fevers and diabetes[1]. The in vitro[3] and in vivo[1] researches have shown that S. megaphylla leaves have antiplasmodial effects. The results of phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, deoxy-sugars, terpenes, saponins, tannins, anthraquinones and cardiac glycosides in the root extract[1]. Data from GCMS studies of n-hexane fraction of the leaves showed that it contained components such as 8,11,14-eicosatrienoic acid (Z,Z,Z), phthalic acid, diisooctyl ester, vitamin E, γ-elemene, Urs-12-ene, bicyclogermacrene, α-muurolene, germacrene-A, and guaiol among others[4]. The cytotoxic, immunomodulatory and antileishmanial activities of the ethanol leaf extract of S. megaphylla have been reported[4]. There is little available information about the activities of S. megaphylla roots. Therefore, the present research aimed to evaluate and provide information on the medicinal potentials of S. H. fossilis, commonly known as Shing or Singhi, is a popular catfish in Bangladesh and generally grows in large low land, Oxbow Lake, large water body, swamps and marshes, ditches and floodplains with natural care. It is characterized by an accessory respiratory organ (air breathing organ) which enables it to exist for hours when out of water or in indefinitely oxygen-poor water and even in moist mud[2]. Over-production of ROS is termed as oxidative stress. Oxidative stress represents a disproportion between the systemic manifestation of ROS and a biological system’s ability to readily detoxify the reactive intermediates or to repair the resulting damage[2]. There are various neurodegenerative diseases that can occur as a result of oxidative stress caused by generation of reactive oxygen species. These diseases include cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, tumors, rheumatoid arthritis and epilepsy[3,4]. Human body system is endowed with endogenous protective antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase that acts as first line of defense, and catalase that mop-ups free radicals which may be produced[5]. However, if the endogenous protective enzymes fall below normal level or become insufficient, dietary antioxidants are needed to counter the effect of excess free radicals production[6]. A number of synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) have been shown to be carcinogenic[7,8]. Therefore, it is very necessary to find alternative antioxidants of natural origin which are cheap and safe. It has been reported that consumption of certain plant materials may prevent the risk of degenerative diseases caused by oxidative stress[9]. The protective effect of these plant materials against oxidative damage may be connected to the antioxidant compounds including carotenoids, vitamins, flavonoids and phenolics present in the plant[10]. Therefore, the search for antioxidants of natural origin as well as isolation of these antioxidant active components now become imperative[11-13]. Certain plants have been reported to be of medicinal importance, and the decoctions of local medicinal plants as well as vegetables consumed by people are believed to have a meaningful contribution to human health improvement, in terms ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT","PeriodicalId":60699,"journal":{"name":"海岸生命医学杂志(英文版)","volume":"5 1","pages":"264-269"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42739407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
