The swarm of floating probes can be programmed to periodically sink some tens of meters below the surface, collecting data, characterizing water properties and then coming to the surface again. The life span of the probes may be assured by an on-board power supply or through batteries recharged by solar cells. Accordingly, the proposed methodology takes into consideration retransmissions and data dropped due to interference and collisions simultaneously. Simulations are conducted using OPNET to model various scenarios utilizing off-the-shelf wireless communication standards, namely ZigBee, Wi-Fi and Low Power Wi-Fi. A figure of merit is developed to offer more representative results for applications with different requirements. However, using traditional routing algorithms for data gathering is energy-inefficient for sensor nodes with limited power resources and multi-hop communication protocols. Data gathering with mobile sinks provided an effective solution to this problem. The major drawback of this approach is the time and path constraints of the mobile sink, which limit the mobile sink to collect data from all sensor nodes and, then, data routing is still required for these unreachable parts by the mobile sink. This paper presents a new data gathering algorithm called Connectivity-Based Data Collection (CBDC). The CBDC algorithm utilizes the connectivity between sensor nodes so as to determine the trajectory of the mobile sink whilst satisfying its path constraint and minimizing the number of multi-hop communications. Rivero-Angeles, Israel Leyva-Mayorga","doi":"10.4236/WSN.2014.65009","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4236/WSN.2014.65009","url":null,"abstract":"Continuous-monitoring (CM) \u0000of natural phenomenon is one of the major streams of applications in wireless \u0000sensor networks (WSNs), where aggregation and clustering techniques are \u0000beneficial as correlation dominates in both spatial and temporal aspects of \u0000sensed phenomenon. Conversely, in Event Driven Reporting (EDR), the efficient \u0000transmission of sensitive data related to some predefined alarm cases is of \u0000major importance. As such, reporting latency is a more important performance \u0000parameter. However, in some applications, the transmission of both CM and EDR \u0000data is encouraged or even required. For either CM or EDR applications, system \u0000performance can be greatly improved when both the number of packets to be \u0000transmitted as well as the packet size is reduced. This is especially true for \u0000highly dense sensor networks where many nodes detect the same values for the \u0000sensed phenomenon. Building on this, this paper focuses on studying and \u0000proposing compression techniques to improve the system performance in terms of \u0000energy consumption and reporting latency in both CM and EDR applications. \u0000Furthermore, we extend our analysis to hybrid networks where CM and EDR are \u0000required simultaneously. Specifically, this paper presents a simple aggregation \u0000technique named smart aggregation (SAG) for the CM applications and an event \u0000driven scheme named compression cluster scheme in spatial correlated region \u0000(CC_SCR). The proposed SAG exploits both spatial and temporal correlations \u0000where CC_SCR exploits the spatial correlation of such networks by data \u0000compression. Rationalizing the developments is attained by simulations that \u0000compare energy efficiency of the proposed SAG with k-hop aggregation and CM based event driven reporting (CMEDR) \u0000schemes. Results of CC_SCR show that the technique may reduce the energy \u0000consumption drastically. In some specific cases the reduction becomes more \u0000than 10 times compared to a classical clustering scheme. Two different strategies \u0000for the transmission of event reports through the CM infrastructure are \u0000incorporated: PER and NPER protocols. Both strategies take advantage of the \u0000cluster-based architecture which assigns a TDMA schedule for the CM data \u0000transmission while using NP/CSMA for the transmission of the event information. \u0000Consequently, no extra energy is consumed for separate event clusters. Various research methodologies were proposed by \u0000researchers in this area. One of the bio-inspired computing paradigms named \u0000Cuckoo search algorithm is used in this research work for finding the energy \u0000efficient path and routing is performed. M-ary frequency shift keying (MFSK) \u0000modulation with orthogonal signals is one of the methods to decrease the power. \u0000However, if the amount of transmitted data including such as an identification \u0000number (ID) of a node and measured data is small, a ratio of the data length to \u0000the total packet length, which means transmission efficiency, becomes quite \u0000low. Because a preamble and error check codes are generally added to a packet \u0000for synchronization between a transmitter and a receiver and for decrease in reception \u0000errors, respectively. In this research, we have developed a method with digital \u0000filters which eliminates the other signals from time series frequency spectra \u0000not to use a preamble and error check codes. Although estimated synchronization \u0000loss of the method was less than 1.6 dB, it was found that the loss of the \u0000method on error packet rate was almost 0 dB at more than 0.001 of packet error \u0000rate by a simulation made by BASIC. Quality of service guarantee in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) \u0000is difficult and more challenging due to the fact that the resources available \u0000of sensors and the various applications running over these networks have \u0000different constraints in their nature and requirements. Traditionally quality of service was focused on network \u0000level with concern in metrics such as delay, throughput, jitter e.c.t. In this \u0000paper we present appropriate metrics of QoS for WSN which involve service, reliability and availability which ultimately \u0000facilitating in archiving qualitable service. We discuss the reverse look of \u0000QoS and hence present mathematically the three significant quality factors that \u0000should currently be taken into account in developing WSNs application quality \u0000services namely, availability, reliability and serviceability. The mobility management approach anticipates link \u0000disruption and relies on a speculative algorithm that does not require scanning \u0000neighbor cells. The joint mobility management and \u0000rate adaptation methods are based on the link quality indicator (LQI).
