His fantasy figures attempt various strategies to put things back together or to find new ways to enrich a present that cannot possibly duplicate the past. Each character confronts an amalgam of past and present losses and gains within their individual and family lives in order to create a successful future. Spielberg’s science fiction films offer a surprising range of perspectives from the ideologically orthodox, to the liberally humanistic, to the radically unconventional, to the morally dystopic.
