The fruit and seed assemblages from different samples show two distinct patterns: the dominance of aquatic herbaceous elements and the dominance of woody wetland elements. The combined mass-occurrence of Myriophyllum and Proserpinaca is documented for the first time in fossil seed and fruit assemblages in Europe. The combined numerous occurrences of Taxodium and Swida are also a new and distinct pattern. Eoeuryale irtyshensis and some other genera are reported for the first time from Austrian deposits. A new species of the Euphorbiaceae genus Acalypha is described. The numerous different genera indicate a variety of wetland habitats, like lakes of different sizes, sluggish streams, floodplain forests, hummocks, natural levees, and swamps. Pocosin-like habitats are not indicated by the Hinterschlagen assemblages but from other sites of the Hausruck area. Hinterland elements or elements of drier habitats are rare in specimens. The floristic composition points to a Cfa-climate sensu Köppen with about 16–17 °C mean annual temperature. The early Late Miocene (Early Pannonian = Early Tortonian) position of the sediments is concluded from the regional geology and the mammal assemblage from the Hausruck gravels at the top of the lignite-bearing sediments, which indicate the mammal zone MN 10 for the gravels and MN 9 (Early Vallesian) for the lignite-bearing sediments.","PeriodicalId":56273,"journal":{"name":"Palaeontographica Abteilung B-Palaeophytologie Palaeobotany-Palaeophytology","volume":"86 1","pages":"57-155"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2011-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87566734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the systematic section, two new species are established: Pseudoceratium redactum and Sentusidinium tanzaniensis. Six informal, stratigraphically successive, dinoflagellate assemblages are distinguished, as follows: Assemblage I (Bajocian–Bathonian); Assemblage II (Callovian); Assemblage III (Oxfordian); Assemblage IV (Kimmeridgian–Tithonian); Assemblage V (Berriasian–Barremian); and Assemblage VI (Aptian–Cenomanian). Coastal Tanzania appears referable to the Austral dinoflagellate realm due to the presence of, inter alia, Broomea ramosa, Komewuia glabra, Wanaea clathrata, and Wanaea digitata. Some minor biostratigraphic anomalies are noted, including the introduction of Glossodinium dimorphum; this is datable as early Oxfordian in Tanzania whereas in Australasia the species appears earlier (in the Callovian). A few noteworthy quantitative phenomena are evident; for instance, the abundance of Lithodinia jurassica in the vicinity of the Callovian–Oxfordian boundary and the marked increase of Wanaea spp. in the Oxfordian, specifically in the Ruvu Basin of the northern coastal belt. These events are of chronostratigraphic significance and could be applicable to regional correlation. Middle– Late Jurassic assemblages show a conspicuous degree of cosmopolitanism, and include some species previously considered to be restricted to certain regions in the low and high latitudes. The Early Cretaceous (Berriasian–Barremian) assemblages show close affinity to the Tethyan Realm. The latest Early Cretaceous (Albian) to earliest Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian) strata are allied to the Albian–Cenomanian Elaterates province. The presence of elater-bearing pollen in offshore and onshore sections of Tanzania indicates that the Elaterates had a wider geographic distribution than previously reported: i.e., extending beyond the northern part of the African and South American continents. The lower part of the Kipatimu Formation, which contains Assemblage IV, yielded Komewuia glabra, Broomea ramosa, and Rigaudella aemula and their presence precludes the Early Cretaceous age previously ascribed to this part of the formation. Likewise the Makonde and Mikindani Beds have yielded typically Early Cretaceous pollen grains including Classopollis braziliensis, Retitricol pites vulgaris, and Elaterocolpites castelainii. The Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary is coincident with the upper limit of Assemblage IV, based on the last appearances of, in particular, Komewuia glabra and Rigaudella aemula. Within the Kipatimu Formation (as represented in wells SS-5 and SS-7), the systemic boundary appears conformable. But elsewhere in the coastal belt, the boundary is clearly unconformable. On the basis of palynostratigraphic data, significant biostratigraphic events","PeriodicalId":56273,"journal":{"name":"Palaeontographica Abteilung B-Palaeophytologie Palaeobotany-Palaeophytology","volume":"48 1","pages":"101-209"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2011-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74572300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The leaf assemblage contains 1 fern, 7 gymnosperms and 76 angiosperms. The spectrum includes also new taxa Distylium huardii sp. nov., Bidens inopinata sp. nov., and Styrax burdigalensis sp. nov. and new records of Tsuga schneideriana Kunzmann & Mai, Marcoduria inopinata Weyland, cf. Cissus sosnowskyi Kolakovskii, Gleditsia sp., Leguminocarpon meczekense Andreánszky, Physocarpus sp., cf. Pistacia sp., and Symplocos cf. bzybica Kolakovskii. Vegetation reconstruction according to the IPR-vegetation analysis belongs to a Zonal subtropical Broadleaved Evergreen forest. This vegetation character was also corroborated by intuitive and geoelement approaches. Palaeoclimatic characters derived from the CLAMP and LMA as well as CoA methodologies indicate comparable average climate estimates as follows: MAT 14.5 °C, CMMT 5.5 °C, WMMT 24 °C and MAP 1190 mm. The distribution of the Eastern Asian elements as well as IPRvegetation analysis and palaeoclimate signals indicate close relationship to vegetation formations of the Mixed Mesophytic and Broadleaved Evergreen forests from SE China and adjacent areas. Phytostratigraphically the Arjuzanx flora based on the complex macrofloristic records shows affinity to the Floral Assemblage Düren sensu Mai (1995) of late Middle – early Late Miocene age.","PeriodicalId":56273,"journal":{"name":"Palaeontographica Abteilung B-Palaeophytologie Palaeobotany-Palaeophytology","volume":"3 1","pages":"3-111"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2011-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84789145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
