This communication presents the results of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based surveillance of white spot virus (WSV) and monodon baculovirus (MBV) in shrimp culture systems of West Bengal, India. The WSV was detected in 14.87% of the total samples (N = 121) by first PCR and 16.53% of samples by nested PCR. The WSV infection was noticed in 12 of 65 Penaeus monodon, 6 of 39 Litopenaeus vannamei and 2 of 11 Macrobrachium rosenbergii samples. The MBV was detected in 8 of 65 P. monodon samples by non-nested PCR and all were also positive for WSV, thus indicating concurrent infection of shrimp. The results emphasized the need to observe strict quarantine measures during the seed selection to prevent the introduction of viral pathogens in grow-out systems.","PeriodicalId":55944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fisheries","volume":"26 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85023598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thousands of attractive fish species are traded annually. The tiger barb Puntius tetrazona is one of the most charming freshwater aquarium species worldwide. The present paper aimed at expanding the knowledge of the reproductive biology of this tropical fish. The ovary and the testis tissues of the tiger barb were embedded in paraffin following routine histological processes, stained with hematoxylin and eosin and Mallory’s trichrome techniques, and investigated by light microscopy. Histological examinations confirmed asynchronous-type ovaries resembling four different developmental stages including primary growth, cortical alveolar, vitellogenic and maturation. In the testis, primary spermatogonia, secondary spermatogonia, primary spermatocytes, secondary spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa were identified. All oogenetic and spermatogenetic phases and mature germ cells occurred simultaneously in the tiger barb. This feature allows this tropical fish to breed rapidly and helps expanding its global trades.","PeriodicalId":55944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fisheries","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78899391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Similarly scales and bony plates of fishes also being used in taxonomic studies. Satyrichthys laticeps commonly called armoured searobins, is a deep-sea peristediid that distributed in the Indo-West Pacific region of the world. However, surface structures of has been unknown. The aim of this study is to reveal the microstructures of barbels and bony plates of S. laticeps, occurring in the Andaman Sea of Thailand, for the first time by using a scanning electron microscopy method. The chin barbels were characterised by a pebble-like surface whereas lip barbels resemble wooden texture. Taste bud-like organs were only visible in chin barbels. Bony plates from heads contained small semispheres around spine. In dorsolateral of posterior body, pits appeared at the apices, and semispherical buds were present in the middle and basal parts of tubercles. The study results may be important in understanding the physiology in peristediid fish.","PeriodicalId":55944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fisheries","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84794698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Respondents were mostly middle aged (31 – 56 years; 61.6%) living in nuclear families (64.9%). Majority of the fisherwomen were found illiterate (88.1%). A greater proportion (84.9%) of fisherwomen involved in fish marketing as a primary occupation followed by salting and curing (9.73%) and pickling of fishes (5.4%). More than half (56.2%) of the respondents earned > Rs. 25,000 (USD$ 1 = Rs. 75) every month. The study revealed that the socio-economic condition of the fisherwomen in the study area is poor, with a high percentage of the illiteracy. Necessary steps should be taken by the Governments organizations, NGOs and respective stakeholders to improve the literacy level as well as livelihood status.","PeriodicalId":55944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fisheries","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78808904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was found that 8.78% of all specimens were infected with L. intestinalis including 17 female (3.8%) and 22 males (4.95%). It was determined that the length–weight relationship equivalents of infected individuals with population differed from those of non-infected individuals. The b value of the infected individuals was found to be lower than the b value of the non-infected individuals. It is thought that the results obtained in this study will be beneficial in preserving and improving the ecological potential of the lake.","PeriodicalId":55944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fisheries","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85703509","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To conserve hilsa, the government of Bangladesh has introduced fishing ban for certain periods of the year and also provides food assistance to hilsa fishers during the restriction period. Inadequate management often pushes real fishers out of the assistance programme and therefore, this study focused on assessing the effectiveness of the programme with a view to proposing a better management practice. A total of 202 randomly selected fishermen, living in the villages adjacent to Andharmanik River of Patuakhali district of Bangladesh, were interviewed. The Andharmanik River is famous for the natural breeding of hilsa. Results suggest that the amount of food provided and its distribution pattern were not that effective for the fishermen. Effectiveness was significantly related to the number of earning able family member, income difference between peak and restricted season and loan facility during the restriction period. This study also explained income difference trajectories of the fishermen community. Community-based management with facilitation by the state fisheries department and local government entity may enhance the programme effectiveness. More awareness programme and research are needed in this regard.","PeriodicalId":55944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fisheries","volume":"18 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85022508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to identify the parasite in P. pelagicus inhabiting the Manila Bay. Parasite found in the branchial chamber were isolated, preserved in ethanol and examined. A total of 292 crab specimens were examined and ten were found to be infected (3.42% prevalence with 0–2 parasites per host). Infections were only observed in November 2014 and between January and June 2015. The highest prevalence of infection (10.34%) was recorded in January 2015 whereas the greatest intensity of infection (up to two parasites per infected crab individual) was recorded from February to April 2015. The parasite, based on morphology, was identified as Allokepon monodi. This study presents the third record of female and second record of male A. monodi infecting a crab species. It also represents the first record of male A. monodi in P. pelagicus and in the Philippines. We recommend further studies on the impacts and economic implications of the disease.","PeriodicalId":55944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fisheries","volume":"2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88210375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
