This study reported the diversity and abundance of fish along with their conservation status from the surrounding waters of the national park to fill the knowledge gap. Fish samples were collected randomly from 16 spots of surrounding water of the park between October 2017 and March 2018. There were 47 fish species recorded belonging to 10 orders, 27 families and 44 genera. Odontamblyopus rubicundus was the dominant fish species that comprised 20.24% of the total catch, followed by Rhinomugil corsula (15.54%), Mystus gulio (12.03%) and Eleutheronema tetradactylum (9.92%). One nationally Endangered fish species (Clupisoma garua) and three Vulnerable fish species (Gudusia chapra, Sicamugil cascasia and Wallago attu) were recorded. Fish diversity of the park was rich but exceeding extraction rate, huge disposal of by catch, and presence of exotic omnivorous fish species was disconcerting that require monitoring and further studies.","PeriodicalId":55944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fisheries","volume":"33 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82835452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The genus Laptocarpus mainly described by their prominent key characters viz., presence of antennal spines, a prominent branchiostegal grooves and the absence of branchiostegal spines on the carapace. Globally, the genus Leptocarpus represents only three species with its Asian distribution, hitherto recorded from different localities across the Indian subcontinent. Specimen collected from Kali River estuary, Karwar being the first record from the Karnataka state. The morphological characters examined were similar to the description revealed for L. potamiscus by Kemp and Jayachandran. Hence, the study updates geographical distribution of L. potamiscucs from the Karnataka coast.","PeriodicalId":55944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fisheries","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-08-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78380064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was conducted to evaluate the In vitro and In vivo antibacterial activity of mangrove ethanolic leaf extract (MLEE) against Salmonella arizonae isolated from Carassius auratus. In vitro, antimicrobial activity of 10 mangrove species and 13 commercial antibiotics were determined using the agar diffusion method. MLEE with the highest antimicrobial activity were subjected to qualitative phytochemical tests and bioassay experiments. In vivo antibacterial activity of MLEE was assessed using C. auratus intraperitoneally injected with S. arizonae. Results showed that Sonneratia alba has the highest antimicrobial activity against S. arizonae followed by Avicennia marina, A. officinalis, Sonneratia ovata, Rhizophora mucronata, Excoecaria agallocha, and Bruguiera cylindrica. However, bacterial isolate was resistant to A. rhumpiana, Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea, and Laguncularia racemosa.  Interestingly, S. alba has comparable antimicrobial activity with amoxicillin, trimethoprim, novobiocin, and cefixime. The activity of S. alba could be attributed to the presence of flavonoids, saponin, sterols, tannin, and terpenoids. Moreover, S. alba has reduced and delayed the onset of goldfish mortality infected with S. arizonae. Based on these findings, the S. alba MLEE, is a potential antimicrobial resource against S. arizonae.","PeriodicalId":55944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fisheries","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-08-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81469491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

African mesquite (Prosopis africana) seeds were subjected to fermentation processes and four iso-nitrogenous diets (35% crude protein) were formulated to contain graded levels of fermented African mesquite seed meal (FMS) to replace soybean meal (SBM) at four inclusion levels (0%, 15%, 30% and 45%) replicated in a completely randomised design. Proximate analysis showed increased in crude protein (35.10% to 41.29%), amino acids concentration, minerals content (calcium and phosphorus) while there were reductions in crude fibre (7.79% to 2.13%), crude lipids (4.02% to 2.67%) and anti-nutritional factors of FMS. The highest protein digestibility of 83.35% was recorded in FMS30 while FMS15 showed the least (77.07%). Carcass compositions were affected by diets composition. The minimum feeding cost of US$ 0.88 kg−1 was registered in FMS45 while FMS15 recorded the highest value of US$ 1.37 kg−1. In conclusion, 45% of FMS could replace SBM without compromising growth performance of Nile tilapia.","PeriodicalId":55944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fisheries","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88502542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to address this issue, an experiment was conducted to determine the suitable species for farming of SIS fishes in carp polyculture ponds in Rajshahi district, Bangladesh. Three different species of SIS fishes were tested under three treatments (T1, Heteropneustes fossilis; T2, Clarias batrachus; T3, Mystus cavasius). Carp species were Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Gibelion catla and Labeo rohita. Stocking density of SIS fishes (37050 individuals ha–1) and carps (H. molitrix, 500; G. catla, 250 and L. rohita 250 individuals ha–1) were same for all the treatments. Fishes were fed 35% protein containing supplementary feed twice a day at the rate of 6% of biomass. Common water quality parameters were monitored monthly and found within the suitable range for fish culture. Treatment T2 was significantly higher than others in terms of fish yield and cost benefit ratio. Further research is also recommended to optimize the stocking density of C. batrachus based carp polyculture.","PeriodicalId":55944,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Fisheries","volume":"19 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81730810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This species exerts negative impacts on the Black Sea ecosystem including destruction of bivalve, mussel and oyster populations. This study aimed to examine population structure using the length-frequency distribution and shell dimensions of R. venosa, collected from the Black Sea. A total of 506 specimens were collected from the Trabzon Coast and classified into 6 age groups using the Bhattacharya method. The Von-Bertalanffy growth parameters were calculated as L∞ = 10.29 cm, k = 0.09, t0 = 1.25 yr–1. The mortality and exploitation rates were estimated as total mortality Z = 0.51 yr–1, fishing mortality F = 0.31 yr–1, annual mortality M = 0.20 yr–1 and exploitation rate E = 0.60 yr–1.
