Barrett","doi":"10.3366/saj.2023.0184","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3366/saj.2023.0184","url":null,"abstract":"An archaeological excavation was undertaken in 2020 to assess the condition and impact of accidental tree planting on two poorly recorded unenclosed platforms on the hills south of Cardrona, Scottish Borders. The work recorded two round-houses in the centre of the platforms, and excavation focused on Platform 2, revealing evidence of multi-phased occupation. An artefact assemblage of coarse stone tools, stone objects and pottery sherds was recovered. The excavation revealed an L-shaped alignment which consisted of 49 pits (27 north-south and 22 east-west) with a possible entrance through the east-west alignment. All of the pits in the alignment were either fully or partially excavated. A fragment of a tall D-sectioned cannel coal bangle, dated to the Iron Age, was recovered from one of the pits. Paton","doi":"10.3366/saj.2023.0183","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3366/saj.2023.0183","url":null,"abstract":"The results from archaeological fieldwork between 2014 and 2016 at Burdiehouse, Edinburgh, have revealed evidence of structures, pits and enclosures related to rural settlement and activity ranging across the Early Medieval period from the 7th century AD up to the 12th century AD. A suite of features included a truncated stone platform, remains of a small post-built building with a hearth and numerous pits, postholes and curvilinear ditches. In addition, a circular clay-lined kiln was recorded. Radiocarbon dating indicates that while the building and hearth, the stone platform and numerous of the pits, postholes and linear features related to activity between the 7th and 10th centuries AD, the kiln was a later feature, dated to the 12th century AD.
