Findings reported derive from the project ‘Place-Making with Older People: Towards Age-Friendly Communities’ which investigates both barriers and facilitators to developing age-friendly cities. Drawing on interviews with older adults in three cities in the United Kingdom (UK), the analysis demonstrates that physical and social vulnerabilities, along with the characteristics of the built and social environment, play a role in influencing older adults’ behaviours, routines and habits in the community. The results are discussed with a view of influencing practice and policy priorities relating to age-friendly cities.","PeriodicalId":55641,"journal":{"name":"Psyecology-Revista Bilingue de Psicologia Ambiental","volume":"5 1","pages":"214 - 231"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74618089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Environmental conditions, such as the inclusion of positive distractions, also seem to play a role in health recovery, but prior studies have never analysed their role in virtual environments. In this study we developed an exergame for the exercise of upper limbs by designing virtual environments with nature elements and testing the impact of including additional positive distractions. Participants (n = 124, 81 females) were randomly assigned to one of two virtual environments: positive distractions vs. no distractions. To test whether these two environments matched the users’ characteristics, sensation-seeking was examined as a moderator. Measures of affect, sense of presence, intrinsic motivation and vitality were applied after the sessions, and game performance was assessed. Results showed that both environments were positively evaluated for all the dependent variables, regardless of the positive distractions and the sensation-seeking traits. However, game performance was affected by the environment and the participants’ sensation-seeking traits, suggesting that the additional distractions can reduce performance, and that individual differences also seem to impact performance.","PeriodicalId":55641,"journal":{"name":"Psyecology-Revista Bilingue de Psicologia Ambiental","volume":"16 1","pages":"49 - 63"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79513399","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study analyses the effects produced as a result of real or virtual experiences of nature. A total of 288 people took part in this research, distributed among three experimental conditions: nature walk, images of nature and control group. Changes were registered in terms of connectedness and environmental identity, caused by the experimental conditions and differences in the free evocations generated. Connection to nature was higher among those who took part in the nature walks, related to the evocation of positive emotions, memories of social experiences in nature and pro-environmental reflections. These results are interesting for the field of environmental education and the promotion of environmental values and behaviours.","PeriodicalId":55641,"journal":{"name":"Psyecology-Revista Bilingue de Psicologia Ambiental","volume":"7 1","pages":"21 - 36"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82268697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because such events have the potential to interfere with individuals’ current needs and goals, this motivates them to evaluate the demands posed by the event and the available resources to cope with them. This, in turn, greatly determines the implemented coping strategies’ effectiveness. Exploring these demands and resources appraisals by coding their indicators and decoding their functions is an important step in promoting resilience and adaptation strategies, in face of future extreme weather events. As a contribution, we propose a theory-driven data collection and coding framework (DeCodeR) for analysing such appraisals, grounded on the Biopsychosocial Model of Challenge and Threat Appraisals (BPS Model). This framework was pilot tested with a sample of 159 participants (33 male; 126 female), and further specified in terms of sub-categories of Demands (Danger; Effort; Uncertainty) and Resources (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities; Dispositions; External Support) that may emerge in extreme weather events. Policymakers, practitioners and researchers can capitalize on this work and develop evidence-based strategies to promote human resilience and adaptation to extreme weather events, based on identified resources/demands. This can be achieved by enhancing individual’s personal and social/community resources to cope with the demands posed by present and future events.","PeriodicalId":55641,"journal":{"name":"Psyecology-Revista Bilingue de Psicologia Ambiental","volume":"82 1","pages":"103 - 90"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74550151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The theme of the conference, ‘Places and Human Behaviour: From Local to Global’, was intended to highlight the spirit of past and present environmental psychology — the study of human behaviour contextualized in space — and to cover a number of possible different approaches, from very delimited spaces to different types of places to the global dimension of human behaviour and the challenges humankind is facing today.Translation from English/ Traducción del inglés: Miguel del Río The works presented at the conference (in different formats such as keynotes, symposia, oral presentations and posters) followed its motto, focusing on the study of questions related to quality of life and the aforementioned human challenges. Accordingly, the articles selected in this special issue present research about human and social psychological processes involved in different types of local and global contexts. Two of the articles are works presented by two young researchers, Minh-Xuan Truong et al. and Samuel Domingos et al., winners of the Fourth Edition of the Rocío Martín Herreros Environmental Psychology Research Award (Premio Rocío Martín Herreros de Investigación en Psicología Ambiental). This special issue compiles 11 articles covering mainly two areas of research in environmental psychology that have seen an important development in recent years: the human relation to nature, identity and well-being and the perception of risks, vulnerability and coping. Thefirst group of articles addresses the study of human relation to nature and its impact on identity andwell-being. Their authors hail from the research area that studies the affective and cognitive ties to nature, and intends to understand how contact with nature can contribute to humanwell-being. Furthermore, two articles are inscribedwithin an applied approach, one to a health context and another to an urban context. The first article from Rocío Martín Award-winner Truong, along with Bonnefoy and Prévot, presents an innovative research work revealing the importance of taking into account the variety of sensory dimensions of human-nature experiences. This research presents the experience and findings of a collaborative research project between the disciplines of architecture and environmental psychology conducted in the Barrio das Estacas district of Lisbon, which has a significant elderly population. The experience combined a technical diagnosis of the public space and residential buildings together with a diagnosis of the psychosocial variables of its residents, obtained by means of surveys, enabling the development of effective action proposals that promote ‘ageing at home’. The research seeks to highlight the true value of characterizing the resident population and analysing their needs and demands for the purposes of urban regeneration through consultation processes, integrating the interdisciplinary perspective in the design of efficient intervention protocols for society. The results show that the residents are satisfied with their residential environment but have noted significant technical contraventions, requirements and demands for work that would improve their safety, health and comfort.","PeriodicalId":55641,"journal":{"name":"Psyecology-Revista Bilingue de Psicologia Ambiental","volume":"111 1","pages":"64 - 77"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79203527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study is to verify differences in volcanic hazard risk perception and knowledge of Civil Protection agents with responsibilities in disaster management in the Azores, assuming that these can influence communication. Risk perception and knowledge were evaluated on a convenience sample of 373 participants. Results indicate moderate levels of volcanic risk perception, lack of knowledge and significant differences in the risk perception of agents from the Civil Protection System. Questions on the efficacy of risk communication between agents, the dissemination of information pertaining to volcanic risk, the dissemination of information on emergency and preparedness measures implemented and on the forms of communication between Civil Protection agents were raised. This study can be regarded as a first effort to analyse the capacity of public officials in the Azores to deal with a volcanic event and points to areas to enhance if resilience is to be promoted.","PeriodicalId":55641,"journal":{"name":"Psyecology-Revista Bilingue de Psicologia Ambiental","volume":"10 1","pages":"116 - 129"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85512532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It looked at residents of the Island of Madeira, where a highly destructive fire had recently occurred. Two groups were compared (people who had been affected directly by the fire event and others who had not) in order to study their risk perception, emotions and coping strategies, and to explore the variables that might contribute to explaining each group’s coping strategies. The results showed that people affected directly by the fire reported higher levels of active coping strategies, such as analysis and prevention. Women displayed higher levels of fear and less use of active coping strategies. The results also revealed that anger, local identity and fire experience predicted both analysis and prevention forms of coping. However, analyses have mainly focused on (1) understanding how risk perception and the lack of procedural and distributive justice in the relationship between local communities and authorities and developers impact those attitudes and beliefs, and (2) the perceptions of publics living within the same borders as the facilities. Less attention has been given to how the deployment of nuclear facilities affects communities beyond the border, and, relatedly, can be impacted upon by other intergroup relations and processes, such as more symbolic dimensions of justice. This paper aims to offer a preliminary exploration of how those intergroup processes might play a role in people’s attitudes and beliefs regarding nuclear energy, based on an analysis of the Portuguese media representations of nuclear facilities in Almaraz, Spain. The implications of these analyses for both energy policy and environmental psychology will be discussed.","PeriodicalId":55641,"journal":{"name":"Psyecology-Revista Bilingue de Psicologia Ambiental","volume":"135 1","pages":"104 - 115"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86827836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
