It includes all available faunistic data based on material collected by the authors and from the private collections, as well as from the literature, PhD theses, and other unpublished sources covering a period between 1914 and 2018. The checklist of 112 species of 40 genera is presented with species distributions in Morocco and North Africa. Hydroglyphus major (Sharp, 1882) is reported for the first time from Morocco. Six species (Agabus dilatatus (Brullé, 1832), Hydroporus longulus Mulsant and Rey, 1861, H. nigrita (Fabricus, 1792), H. planus (Fabricius, 1782), Bidessus pumilus (Aubé, 1838) and Ilybius fuliginosus (Fabricius, 1792)) are excluded from the country’s fauna. A chorological analysis shows that most species are essentially Mediterranean (60%), whilst those whose distribution is wider in Palearctic (25%) or extends into Nearctic (9.29%) or Afrotropical regions (5.71%) are clearly less represented. This chorotype pattern is similar to that observed for other aquatic insects in the same study area.","PeriodicalId":55492,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Insects","volume":"42 1","pages":"247 - 371"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2021-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41668128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Whilst their distribution is well known, their morphology and how they have adapted to these diverse environments remains unknown. In this study, we focus on the physiological characteristics, especially the oxygen consumption, and gill morphology of larvae of these two lineages of I. japonica to infer how they adapt to different environments. Our results indicate that I. japonica of the clade J-U has a higher O2 consumption and is greatly influenced by temperature compared to the clade J-D, which is consistent with the physicochemical characteristics of their habitats. Also we show that the two lineages of I. japonica are not only divergent genetically and in their environmental habitats but also different morphologically and physiologically.","PeriodicalId":55492,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Insects","volume":"43 1","pages":"30 - 40"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2021-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01650424.2021.1942495","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47078144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Employing both Malaise traps and UV light traps, adult caddisflies were collected in four streams (two each in the Caribbean and Pacific drainages). In recent publications, 11 new species were described and four first country records published for this study. Seventy-two taxa were identified from all samples, with two species yet to be described. We found multiple collection methods were required to adequately estimate species richness. The Chao2 estimator of potential species richness indicated a minimum of 118 species, and even more species could be expected if prolonged sampling occurred monthly in all park streams. The identification and addition of 15 new taxa to Panama’s Trichoptera fauna from such a small area and sampling effort is both remarkable and encouraging.","PeriodicalId":55492,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Insects","volume":"43 1","pages":"85 - 98"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2021-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01650424.2021.1942496","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42522380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A parsimony analysis based on 84 larval characteristics of 11 species in six genera was conducted using the program TNT. Larvae of Sternopriscus Sharp, 1882 are characterised by the last abdominal segment not extending into siphon and by very elongate urogomphi. Sternopriscus is subdivided into two groups based either on absence or reduction in number of natatory setae along the dorsal margin of femora, tibiae and tarsi. Measuring growth rate is useful to analyse these aspects through the estimation of instar and biomass in aquatic insects like shredder trichopterans. We aimed to produce allometric relationships based on larval body parts and case dimensions to estimate larval instars and biomass for Phylloicus cressae Prather, 2003. Here, we showed that classification tree analysis and power and exponential models proved that dorsal and ventral length of cases were good predictors of larval instars and biomass for P. cressae. We also found that allometric relationships involving the length of the prothoracic mid-dorsal ecdysial suture were suited for assessing larval instars but performing these measurements on cased trichopterans is difficult without damaging them. So, allometric models like ours, based on case dimensions, are invaluable when dealing with live individuals.","PeriodicalId":55492,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Insects","volume":"42 1","pages":"216 - 229"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2021-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01650424.2021.1908565","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46914166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of ASGM on the assemblages of aquatic insects. For this, aquatic insects were sampled from two actively mined streams in the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. ASGM produces significant changes in the richness, abundance and assemblage’s composition of aquatic insects. These changes, however, are mitigated a few meters downstream, after encountering a seemingly undisturbed tributary, for which the stream seems to keep its stability through resilience. For ASGM activities that have low intensities of extraction and don’t use pollutant chemicals for amalgamation, keeping a low intensity of the activity and a considerable distance between goldmining sites could be an option for a more sustainable development of this activity, since it allows biodiversity to be partially restored.","PeriodicalId":55492,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Insects","volume":"42 1","pages":"160 - 178"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2021-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01650424.2021.1886308","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44735229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
