However, little research exists on users' perspectives of the value they obtain from these systems. This paper seeks to directly address this issue.Design/methodology/approach – A case study approach was employed. The system selected for the case study was the Milton Keynes intelligence (MKi) Observatory, which is managed by Milton Keynes Council. Interviews with key staff involved in the system's development were undertaken to examine the reasons for the development of a local information system. A survey with the system's users provided insight into its use and value.Findings – The paper found that, although the MKi Observatory is of significant value to users, they experience difficulty in finding data and information and in the use and interpretation of statistical and mapping data. In this study, the paper investigates the role microblogs play by exploring the types of messages following the death of a public figure, Michael Jackson, “the King of Pop”.Design/methodology/approach – Content analysis was conducted using 50,000 tweets harvested from Twitter from the first 12 days after Michael Jackson's death. A coding instrument characterizing a set of categories that users posted about Jackson's death was inductively constructed, and then applied to the entire dataset of tweets.Findings – About 50 per cent of tweets fell into categories commonly associated with expressions of emotions or thoughts due to death. However, as the single largest category, Twitter was used primarily as a platform for sharing news and other information. Surprisingly, categories not normally associated with grieving, such as spr...","PeriodicalId":55449,"journal":{"name":"Aslib Proceedings","volume":"52 1","pages":"432-444"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90797725","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each journal was assigned to one of three ownership categories and growth policies analyzed separately for each.Findings – Overall primary reliance was placed on launching new journals and increasing the frequency of issue. However, there was a marked difference between for‐profits and non‐profits. The former launched most new journals and increased publication frequency while keeping individual issues quite short. By contrast, the latter added few journals or issues, but did systematically include more articles in each issue.Origin...","PeriodicalId":55449,"journal":{"name":"Aslib Proceedings","volume":"22 1","pages":"445-463"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80205848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, by looking at publicly accessible metadata records, it was impossible to determine the full extent of metadata created, especially when there could be metadata that were kept in‐house. This was complemented with interviewing of staff from the institutions concerned.Findings – The study found that metadata records for digital images in four types of institutions have different emphases on metadata functions and a variety of metadata are not applied on a consistent basis.
