We evaluated whether body size in the common vampire bat (<i>Desmodus rotundus</i>) varies with climate and elevation across Colombia using 1076 museum and field specimens (1921-2023). Field specimens originated from diverse environmental conditions, including sites with mean annual temperatures ranging from 8.94 to 28.94 °C, annual precipitations from 515 to 7132 mm, and elevations from 4.6 to 3476 m a.s.l. Forearm length, a proxy for body size, was analysed with regression models, including Colombian department as a random effect. Linear models showed that forearm length decreased with mean annual temperature (females: <i>R</i> <sup>2</sup> = .023, β = -.143, <i>P</i> = .006; males: <i>R</i> <sup>2</sup> = .044, β = -.173, <i>P</i> = 1.03 × 10<sup>-5</sup>) and increased with elevation (females: <i>R</i> <sup>2</sup> = .038, β = .001, <i>P</i> = 3.66 × 10<sup>-4</sup>; males: <i>R</i> <sup>2</sup> = .039, β = .001, <i>P</i> = 3.35 × 10<sup>-5</sup>), with an overall decrease of .19 mm per 1°C across all individuals. In contrast, linear mixed-effects models found no significant effects of temperature, elevation, precipitation, or latitude. These contrasting results suggest data limitations and that patterns detected by simpler models disappear when accounting for the spatial structure of the sampling. We argue that temperature is not a robust predictor of body size in <i>D. rotundus</i>. Our findings advance the biogeography of <i>D. rotundus</i> and provide a foundation for the uncertainty of climate change effects on bat morphology.</p>","PeriodicalId":55373,"journal":{"name":"Biological Journal of the Linnean Society","volume":"148 3","pages":"blag030"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2026-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13319869/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148378198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Without formalization, these collections remain inaccessible to the research community. The expertise required to grow, manage, and develop these collections for research and other biodiversity-related work is largely lacking because of limited investment, isolation of scientists, and insufficient capacity development. We report a consortium of mammal collections in the West Africa Mammal Partnership, a growing network of biodiversity practitioners. By forming a consortium, each collection is better positioned to grow through collective fundraising, training, and deployment of standard collection management practices. We present information on mammal collections based in four countries (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, and Nigeria), including taxonomic coverage, number of specimens, duration, geographical focus, and contributions. Collections in the consortium are focused primarily on bats and have contributed to new species descriptions and &amp;gt;30 new country records, with two maintaining tissue samples (muscle, liver, fur, skin biopsies, and faecal material). We anticipate that with increased attention and integration of collecting goals during ecological surveys, species monitoring, and disease surveillance efforts, each collection will work towards formalization, improving access to specimens and data, while raising the capacity of in-country scientists for biodiversity science that informs decision-making and, ultimately, species conservation.","PeriodicalId":55373,"journal":{"name":"Biological Journal of the Linnean Society","volume":"147 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147885642","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, macroevolutionary trends between snake dietary ecology and jaw system morphology have yet to be investigated with dense sampling across a broad phylogenetic scale. We used computerized tomography data and phylogenetic comparative methods to explore the evolution of two functionally important jaw traits, relative quadrate length (RQL) and jaw-closing mechanical advantage (MA), across nearly 600 species of colubroid snakes. While relative prey bulk explained observed patterns of quadrate length evolution largely on its own, both relative prey bulk and relative prey mass influenced the evolution of mechanical advantage. Additionally, there was a weak but significant inverse relationship between RQL and MA. We suggest that selection for maintaining a large gape has largely co-opted the force-velocity trade-off to become the primary driver of jaw system evolution in snakes. Our results highlight the significance of macrostomy as an important innovation in the evolutionary history of snakes and provide new insights into the macroevolutionary relationship between ecology and phenotype in this diverse global radiation.</p>","PeriodicalId":55373,"journal":{"name":"Biological Journal of the Linnean Society","volume":"146 4","pages":"blaf113"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12667253/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145662836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In geographically isolated populations, the divergence of traits associated with mate choice can lead to further genetic separation. In this study, we investigate divergence in song syllable types, acoustic structure (e.g. kilohertz frequency), singing behaviour (e.g. number of syllables per song), and morphology in two allopatric populations of Darwin's cactus finch (<i>Geospiza scandens</i>) on Floreana and Santa Cruz Islands in the Galápagos Archipelago. Using song recordings of 50 males, we identified 25 syllable types, with no overlap between islands, indicating a complete divergence in syllable repertoires. Syllables of Floreana and Santa Cruz males diverged in the acoustic space largely owing to broader frequency bandwidths on Floreana. Moreover, Floreana males had smaller beaks than Santa Cruz males. Despite acoustic and morphological divergence, singing behaviours, such as syllable repetition rate and number of syllables per song, did not differ significantly. Cultural processes, including drift and transmission biases, and selection on morphology could have contributed to the observed acoustic divergence. This study adds to a growing literature on the role of geographical separation in the accumulation of both cultural and morphological divergence between populations. Future research could interrogate speciation scenarios in cactus finches if populations cease to interbreed after secondary contact.</p>","PeriodicalId":55373,"journal":{"name":"Biological Journal of the Linnean Society","volume":"146 2","pages":"blaf098"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2025-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7619092/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147984354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Frequently, the materiality of specimen labels is considered problematic, given the difficulties in translating the data contained on them to machine-readable formats, possibly hampering the comparability of biological data. However, this framework frequently ignores the fact that the materiality of specimen labels is a manifestation of the historical and social frictions of the agents involved in documenting biodiversity. Here, we show how the materiality of specimen labels reflects the epistemic frictions of agents responsible for fieldwork and laboratory documentation. Our results show how the demands of recorders and collectors are frequently manifested physically during specimen label creation in different moments of its life-cycle, while exposing the socio-cultural struggles in preparing and preserving this type of record, and the institutional constraints in their curation, affecting policy-making at the institutional level.","PeriodicalId":55373,"journal":{"name":"Biological Journal of the Linnean Society","volume":"147 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147899518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We studied two hummingbird species, Lampornis viridipallens and L. sybillae, by integrating phylogeography, ecological niche modelling, and morphological measurements to understand variation and diversification in Central America. Mitochondrial and microsatellite data indicated that L. viridipallens and L. sybillae diverged in allopatry during the early Pleistocene on either side of the Honduras Depression. Ecological niche divergence followed or accompanied this allopatric divergence. Dry valleys that separate mountain ranges, mainly the Motagua–Polochic–Jocotán Fault System and the valley between Quaternary and Tertiary volcanoes in southern Guatemala, are the primary geographical barriers promoting isolation within L. viridipallens, a species restricted to montane forests. Genetic groups within L. viridipallens do not match currently recognized subspecies, and morphological measurements are similar across subspecific or genetic groups. Our extensive geographical sampling revealed that population differentiation is enhanced on the eastern side of the Motagua–Polochic–Jocotán Fault System, but not on the western side, which suggests that the isolating effect of this fault system is heterogeneous along its extent.","PeriodicalId":55373,"journal":{"name":"Biological Journal of the Linnean Society","volume":"146 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147885053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Albeit generally considered potential barriers to species movement, they may also facilitate gene flow and structure populations of semiaquatic species (Riverine Thruway Hypothesis, RTH). We evaluated the role of rivers on the processes responsible for current genetic variation in the semiaquatic frog Pseudis bolbodactyla, testing whether each hydrographic basin harbours distinct genetic lineages. We sequenced three markers on 166 samples from 13 localities along the Paraná (PR), Araguaia–Tocantins (AT), and São Francisco (SF) River basins in Brazil. We recovered three populations geographically matching each hydrographic basin. Our results indicate migration among basins, with the best model selected using approximate Bayesian computation, including migration between AT and SF and ancient gene flow from PR to the AT–SF ancestor. Our findings are likely related to the orogenic events in Central Brazil dating to the Late Miocene (5 Mya), when hydrographic basins and the geomorphological features of the Brazilian Shield were formed. This suggests that P. bolbodactyla probably represents a species complex, with each lineage occurring in a distinct hydrographic basin, matching the predictions of the RTH.","PeriodicalId":55373,"journal":{"name":"Biological Journal of the Linnean Society","volume":"39 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2024-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142259744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The thesis describes food preference trials in cows, goats, sheep, horses, and pigs, and includes 2325 tests with 643 plant species. The data had surprisingly little bearing on the text in the thesis, and even though the experiments quickly became internationally known, the data were merely repeated, rather than discussed. We have digitized the data and linked the species names to modern nomenclature and present the first analysis and discussion of the results. Pigs were most selective (eating 32% of the 204 plant species that were tested on all animals), followed by horses (59%), cows (66%), sheep (82%), and goats (85%). The ruminants (especially goats and sheep) had high overlap in food choice, and the pigs deviated most (despite the fact that pigs are more closely related to the ruminants than are horses). Among plant orders, Fabales and Poales were generally preferred, while Lamiales and Ranunculales were avoided, especially by cows and horses. Cows and horses were also more keen to avoid toxic plant species. All animals showed a preference for species that are today considered nutritious. We now make the data available, for further analyses in ecology, history of science, and other disciplines.","PeriodicalId":55373,"journal":{"name":"Biological Journal of the Linnean Society","volume":"214 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2024-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142259743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We used these data to characterize variation across the mitogenome and to evaluate changes in mitochondrial diversity across a 20 year time series punctuated by marked species decline. We observed different evolutionary rates among protein-coding genes and inflated values of the ratio of non-synonymous change to non-synonymous sites to synonymous changes per synonymous site for several protein-coding genes, violating assumptions of selective neutrality. Analyses suggested that non-synonymous substitutions are effectively neutral, and our results were not consistent with genetic draft. Mitogenomes revealed large long-term effective population size for Rio Grande silvery minnow, and time-series data indicated recent reductions in mitochondrial diversity via genetic drift associated with population bottlenecks. These displays often require specialized morphological adaptations and may incorporate signals in multiple sensory modalities. Visual and acoustic signals are often precisely choreographed in temporally structured courtship performances, though the precise mechanics of such signalling behaviours are often enigmatic. We find that riflebirds (genus Ptiloris)—a bird of paradise clade—achieve their remarkable display postures by hyperextending the wrist joint, vastly exceeding the maximal wrist extension capabilities of any other known bird. Using video collected in the field, we then show that this hypermobility is required for a sonation unique to riflebirds, and find that the yellow interior of the mouth is displayed in the dynamic phase of display. As this sonation cannot be produced when the mouth is exposed, it represents a mechanical constraint to signal design. Finally, we used a large morphometric dataset to describe patterns of sexual dimorphism in wing length across diverse bird of paradise species, and find evidence of sexual selection for large and structurally modified wings used in riflebird displays. Our study highlights nuanced choreographic differences in the display behaviours of different riflebird species, and sheds light on the intricate design features of sexual signals in this fascinating taxon.","PeriodicalId":55373,"journal":{"name":"Biological Journal of the Linnean Society","volume":"19 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2024-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142259745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
