Several characters are discussed in some detail. The subdivision of the genus is discussed. We accept two subgenera: subg. Mucuna and subg. Stizolobium. Several groups of species showing similarity in some characters are discussed. A description of the genus is presented, two keys to the species are given. The main part of the paper consists of an enumeration of the species including descriptions of new species: three byAdema (M. angustifolia, M. eurylamellata, M. kabaenensis) and four by Wiriadinata (M. aimun, M. havilandii, M. sakapipei, M. verdcourtii). Neotypes are designated for M. diabolica and M. novo-guineensis. Mucuna pachycarpa Parreno is validated.Asubspecies of M. pruriens, subsp. novo-guineensis, is raised to species level as M. papuana. In this treatment, 18 species are recognised; six names are lectotypified (B. insignis, B. kunstleri, B. maingayi, B. membranacea, B. roxburghiana and B. scortechinii) and five are placed into synonymy for the first time; one name is validly published for the first time (B. atra) and one species is recognised and described here as new to science (B. kochummenii). Misinterpretations were caused by superficial morphological similarities and traditional nomenclatural errors. The species now recognized include six previously described: H. barclayana, H. hookeriana (formerly included in H. reclinata), H. reclinata, H. sanctae-marthae, H. ternifolia, and H. transiens. Four new species are proposed: H. mcvaughii, H. silvicola, and H. venezuelana; H. trianae was previously recognized at varietal level and is elevated to species. A neotype is chosen for H. reclinata. Lectotypes are designated for H. velutina (= H. barclayana) and four synonyms of H. reclinata: H. borealis, H. borealis var. glandulifera, H. obovata var. angustifolia, H. obovata var. latifolia forma glandulifera. Full descriptions and synonymies as well as a key are presented. The filaments of the fourth corona row are 1 cm long and oriented to the androgynophore, which is reminiscent of P. acuminata, P. cerasina, P. fissurosa, P. killipiana and P. nitida. Three former synonyms, B. novoguineense (new name for Bennettia papuanum), B. philippinense and B. subrotundifolium, are reinstated as species. It is unique by its white to pale white (or pale lilac) flowers, outer tepals with purplish maroon and dark yellow spots and stripes, and inner tepals with pale purplish and bluish spots and stripes.
