The patient, whose coat has been clipped, is given a daily hot soapy-water bath, followed by about 15 minutes' massage of the entire body surface, using a little rape oil as lubricant. The interval between baths is lengthened according to the progress made. Applied to dogs this ancient balneological therapy has proved most beneficial to the restoration of the skin and connective-tissue systems. Additional dressings are seldom required ; nor are they tolerated if the lesions are lickable. The appropriate surgical measures are applied for sepsis. All our cases have lived under the conditions ordinarily obtainbig for pet or commercial dogs, i.e. continually or intermittently at risk. More than one hundred of them have been observed over a minimum of three years of vaccination. After the first twelve to eighteen months whelps are bred and reared successfully, their mortality-rate falling,' to within 5%. In mature dogs the morbidity-rate is considerably reduced, extension of the infection is usually prevented and recurrences are mild. On the other hand, we have failed to produce a durable immunity, or to prevent the retention and periodic multiplication of the B.H.S. in the mucus of the phar3m:x: and vagina. In the B.H.S. infection of dogs I see no room for such terms as healthij-, symptomlessor imtnu^ne-carriers, since every infected dog that I have examined has revealed specific signs ; is a jiotential spreader of the infection ; and hardly falls M ithin my notion of a carrier of health. It seems to me that in order to find the means of destroing the B.H.S. in mucus and conferring a durable imniTUuty we need research planned and executed by the Medical Research Council. The veterinary contribution opens a new vista in the research of this di-eadful scourge of man and animals, viz. knowledge of the natural infection of animals which could serve as subjects of the experimentallj^ induced infection under the quarantine conditions designed and exploited so successfully for the virus of canine distemper by the late Sir Patrick Laidlaw.","PeriodicalId":55324,"journal":{"name":"British Journal of Dermatology and Syphilis","volume":"58 11-12","pages":"291-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1946-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/j.1365-2133.1946.tb11327.x","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"28832384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There were 50 women thus investigated. Of these, 35 who were under the age of 25 are here reported on ; older women present somewhat different problems. Among the 35 women studied, 15 had gonorrhoea alone ; 14 had syphilis alone, and 2 had both diseases. In 2 cases the diagnosis was doubtful, and in 2 examination was refused. The women were interviewed, on one or more occasions, in a classroom set aside for the purpose, and as much information obtained from them as the conditions permitted. This was checked and supplemented by data from (1) the medical and police records kept at the prison, (2) probation officers, (3) medical officers in charge of venereal disease clinics, (4) relatives and acquaintances of the prisoners. None of these sources could provide more than partial and inadequate information for the purpose of the inquiry. The prisoners themselves did not always confide readily in the interviewer ; the police records deal only with information bearing on specific charges","PeriodicalId":55324,"journal":{"name":"British Journal of Dermatology and Syphilis","volume":"58 ","pages":"228-35"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1946-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/j.1365-2133.1946.tb11242.x","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"29400789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
