To provide reference values for the restoration and management of submerged vegetation in the lakes, the optical attenuation coefficient (Kd ) and euphotic depth (Zeu ) of the water body were calculated, and the distribution characteristics and factors that influenced the underwater optical field lands with different nutrition levels in the basin were analyzed. The main factor affecting the distribution of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in lakes in the Taihu Lake basin is suspended solids (SS), dominated by inorganic suspended matter (ISS). Chlorophyll a (Chl-a), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) all affect, although weakly, the optical characteristics of lake wetlands. In CDOM, humic-like components have a more significant impact on Kd . The Kd of lakes in the Taihu Lake basin is closely related to permanganate index (CODMn) and especially total phosphorus (TP); The growth of aquatic vegetation is increased in Shanghu, Dianshan-Yuandang, Yangcheng, and Wuli Lakes that have higher Zeu and Zeu /Depth values.","PeriodicalId":54830,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Freshwater Ecology","volume":"37 1","pages":"243 - 257"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43413834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The depth of a suspended ecological bed could be adjusted based on the water level. From July to November 2019, the phytoplankton community structure in the water around the suspended beds was continually monitored, and the effects of the submerged plants present in the suspended beds on the phytoplankton community structure in the deep-water area of the lake were studied. The results showed that Myriophyllum spicatum L. grew well in the suspended beds, with 95% survival after 60 d. The maximum biomass was reached in 55 d, and the water surface coverage reached 23%. There were 71 species of phytoplankton belonging to seven phyla in the water surrounding the suspended ecological beds. Over half (36 species) were members of Prochlorophyta, and the average density and biomass of phytoplankton gradually decreased month by month. The proportion of cyanobacteria in the community showed a downwards trend, while the proportions of other phytoplankton phyla showed upwards trends. The annual average Shannon–Wiener diversity index was 0.88, the annual average Pielou evenness index was 0.32, and the annual average Margalef richness index was 1.21. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index and Pielou's evenness index both showed increasing trends. This comprehensive analysis shows that planting submerged plants in suspended beds can improve the phytoplankton community structure of the surrounding water and increase the biodiversity of phytoplankton, making this an effective measure for restoring submerged vegetation in algae-dominated northern lakes.","PeriodicalId":54830,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Freshwater Ecology","volume":"37 1","pages":"189 - 202"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42853994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we examined the effects of two extreme water levels on the nutrient dynamics of Changhu Lake over five years. The nutrient parameters in Changhu Lake showed significant interannual variations, and the nutrient concentrations at the sites in the western part of Changhu Lake were 2–41% higher than those at the outlet of the lake. In late 2015, the effects of low water levels led to a 17–74% increase in nutrient concentrations. After July 2016, however, a high water level event occurred, leading to a 34–48% decrease in nutrient concentrations. These changes in nutrient parameters were strongly related to water level fluctuations (p < 0.05). As extreme water levels are likely to become more frequent during the twenty-first century, this work may provide some insights into the conservation and management of lake ecosystems in the face of climate change and human activity.","PeriodicalId":54830,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Freshwater Ecology","volume":"37 1","pages":"131 - 143"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43957677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To assess the ecological effects of imbalanced P on producers as well as consumer reactions to changes in food quality, the effects of P concentrations (HP, MP, LP) on Scenedesmus obliquus, were investigated. To investigate the indirect effects of P levels on consumer feeding behavior and life history strategies, the algae were fed to Rotaria rotatoria. The results showed that P concentrations increased population density, environment capacity, cell size, specific growth rate, chlorophyll a, and chlorophyll b substantially. As a result of the P intracellular concentration of algae produced in HP and MP media, the algae were classified as two categories of food quality (P-rich, P-poor). Rotifers' grazing and filtration rates were significantly increased when they were fed P-poor algae. In reaction to a lack of P in their diet, rotifers extended their juvenile and reproductive periods, resulting in a longer life span, generation time, and life expectancy at rotifer hatching. Despite living longer than P-rich groups, rotifers fed P-poor algae produced much fewer offspring and had a significantly lower net reproductive rate, which was linked to the rotifers' longer generation period. According to the findings, phosphorus has a major impact on algal food quality, and herbivorous consumers are subjected to significant food quality variation of algae, which they respond to by modifying their life history strategies and feeding behavior.","PeriodicalId":54830,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Freshwater Ecology","volume":"37 1","pages":"57 - 69"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47666679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Efficient assessment of river/stream ecosystem response to such anthropogenic changes is urgently needed. Many human activities that have an effect on water quality and river health are increasing along the Mohlapitsi River, which used to be one of the rivers with good water quality in South Africa. The aim of the study was to assess spatial variation in macroinvertebrate assemblages in relation to water quality of the Mohlapitsi River. A combination of canonical correspondence analysis and univariate analyses were used to examine the macroinvertebrate assemblages at six different sites of the Mohlapitsi River. The spatial difference in macroinvertebrate abundance was mostly related to changes in water quality. The number of taxa and the diversity of macroinvertebrates remained relatively high across the river as compared to other rivers in the Olifants River System. The midstream and downstream sites were mostly dominated by macroinvertebrates tolerant to disturbance/pollution. The most abundant family was the Thiaridae (about 60%) and mainly occurred in the midstream and downstream sites of the river (more disturbed sites). The study showed a higher evenness index in the upstream than the midstream and downstream sites which is an indication of good water quality at the upstream sites of the river. The results suggest that the river is being subjected to a moderate environmental pollution, which requires continuous assessment and monitoring to determine causes and initiate remedial measures.","PeriodicalId":54830,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Freshwater Ecology","volume":"37 1","pages":"145 - 160"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41465948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Samples were collected for analyses during summer and winter. 23 phytoplankton functional groups were identified among 102 species, of which 9 groups (H1, M, C, MP, Y, S1, J, X1 and X2) were categorized as dominant. Y represented by Cryptomonas ovate and H1, represented by Anabaena circinalis and Anabaena variabilis, were dominant in some sites in summer corresponding to higher temperatures. In winter, the biomass of the functional groups was dominated by chlorophyta group X2 corresponding to lower temperatures, and relatively high nutrients. Redundancy analysis (RDA) with Monte Carlo test revealed that water temperature (WT), TP, and TN were the most dominant environmental variables which influenced phytoplankton functional group distribution in Lake Okeechobee. Functional group H1 was associated with TN, pH, TP and WT. Similarly, functional group Y was significantly positively correlated with TN, TP and WT but negatively correlated with TN/TP ratios. This study reveals the importance of physical–chemical variables across a spatial and seasonal gradient, in structuring phytoplankton functional groups, and consequently in the assessment of environmental status of the lake.","PeriodicalId":54830,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Freshwater Ecology","volume":"37 1","pages":"173 - 187"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48979557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, dry seasons can lead to poor water quality due to nitrogen (N) accumulation, which, in turn, may result in the gradual decline or even disappearance of submerged plants. This outdoor study was conducted to determine the morphological, biomass responses and C/N metabolism of Vallisneria spinulosa to the high N content and low water level. We used two N contents (i.e., low and high) and three simulated water levels (i.e., gradual water level increase from 60 cm to 150 cm over four periods (C), low water level of 60 cm maintained for three periods followed by an abrupt increase to 150 cm in the fourth period (CE) and low water levels of 60 ± 30 cm maintained for three periods followed by an abrupt increase to 150 cm in the fourth period (E)). For the low N content, low water levels for CE and E treatments caused increased ramet number and biomass of V. spinulosa. However, for the high N content, the low water levels did not cause such big changes in V. spinulosa. High N contents demonstrated a remarkably negative influence on the biomass of each organ (included leaf, stolon, root and tuber) of V. spinulosa and flowering ramet number. For C water level, the high N content caused an increase in free-amino acid (FAA) content in stolons and leaves, and no difference in soluble carbohydrate (SC) content. For E water level, there was no significant increase in FAA content of V. spinulosa under high N treatment; furthermore, there was no significant change in SC content under high N treatment except for leaves. In conclusion, low water levels exacerbated the damage to V. spinulosa caused by high nitrogen level.","PeriodicalId":54830,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Freshwater Ecology","volume":"37 1","pages":"161 - 172"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47762926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, we document change to native and nonnative fish captures and instream habitat features following a decade-high flooding event (2019) in the Verde River (AZ) where native fish captures were rare in the years pre-flood. Using prepositioned areal electrofishing devices (PAEDs), we sampled the fish community at 90 sampling units pre-flood (2017) and resampled those same units post-flood (2019) to compare and identify changes to catch and habitat features. Relative abundance of native fishes increased from 0.6% pre-flood (0.01 fish/PAED) to 53.0% post-flood (1.66 fish/PAED) and was largely attributable to the presence of juvenile Roundtail Chub Gila robusta (≤ 70 mm total length (TL)) and juvenile Sonora Sucker Catostomus insignis (≤ 100 mm TL). Juvenile Desert Sucker Catostomus clarkii experienced a lesser increase. One adult native fish was captured in 2017 and adult native fishes were absent from 2019 sampling. The catch of adult/subadult Common Carp Cyprinus carpio (> 100 mm TL) declined; however, this could be related to reservoir management and not the flood. The abundance of all size-classes of Black Bass Micropterus spp., Red Shiner Cyprinella lutrensis and other nonnative fishes did not change. The majority (97%) of juvenile native fishes were captured at the uppermost sampling reach. A 54% reduction to canopy cover across all sampling reaches and an increase of fine sediments at the most downstream reach demonstrates how floods can restructure the river environment. This case-study adds evidence that protection of spring floods is vital to the persistence and recolonization of fishes native to the desert Southwest, especially where they are rare. The continued presence of nonnative species may preclude juvenile native fishes from recruiting to adults.","PeriodicalId":54830,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Freshwater Ecology","volume":"37 1","pages":"1 - 14"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44384767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

B. fatalis is a widespread cladoceran species found in freshwater. The present study aimed to explore the toxic responses of B. fatalis to ammonia. Our experiments showed that the 24, 48, 72 and 96 h LC50 values of NH3 on B. fatalis were 20.59, 13.06, 5.77 and 3.36 mg·L−1, respectively. A 14-days NH3 exposure study at 0, 0.22, 0.57 and 1.4 mg·L−1 were carried out. NH3 at low and medium doses (0.22 and 0.57 mg·L−1) displayed stimulative effects on the B. fatalis population and the body length of the newborns, while NH3 at high dose (1.4 mg·L−1) did not exhibit significant effect on the B. fatalis population and size. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) revealed significant increase in number of ribosomes at low doses, while the interior structure showed no marked change at high dose. The levels of indicators related to oxidative stress (ACP, SOD, CAT, GSH-Px and MDA) caused by NH3 first increasedand, then decreased with time in all the NH3-exposure groups. The mRNA expression of genes related to ribosomal structure (RPL12, RPL10, RPL10A, RPL27A and RPL19) and antioxidant stress (CAT, SOD and GSH-Px) was rapidly downregulated after NH3 exposure. Collectively, it is inferred that ammonia at a certain dose (≤0.57 mg·L−1) stimulates the growth and reproduction of B. fatalis, which may be its defensive reaction to ammonia. Some Brachionus calyciflorus clones consistently develop two posterolateral spines (PS) with similar length (Type A), but others (Type B) not. The underlying mechanisms remain unknown. In the present study, the resting eggs were collected from the same B. calyciflorus strain, their hatchlings (stem rotifers) were categorized into types A and B, and then, clonally cultured for eight generations at different algal densities or temperatures. The results showed that the PS varied in length among different temperatures and food levels, but inherent differences between types A and B were always observed, indicating that differentiation between types A and B might not associate with temperature or food availability. Next, we compared the population growth and PS length between types A and B at the general condition (control), in responses to Asplanchna kairomone, Keratella tropica and Moina macrocopa. The results showed that type B had higher population growth rate than type A, suggesting the higher adaptability of type B in the general condition. In response to Asplanchna kairomone, the PS length of both types A and B was significantly induced, and their PS length was similar, but type B showed higher population growth rate than type A. Coculture with M. macrocopa significantly lengthened the PS of type B but not type A, and types A and B showed similar population growth curves. Coculture with K. tropica did not affect significantly the PS length of types A and B. However, type A showed significantly and greatly higher population density and population growth rate than type B, indicating a much stronger competition ability of type A than type B against K. tropica. Overall, these results indicated that consistent development of PS might facilitate B. calyciflorus to defend against small competitors.","PeriodicalId":54830,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Freshwater Ecology","volume":"37 1","pages":"85 - 101"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2021-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46536264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
