The undrained shear strength of tailings is commonly assessed through element testing, such as the triaxial test, typically performed on loose samples under complete saturation. However, a substantial portion of tailings facility deposits often exist in partially saturated conditions. Despite the recognized increase in tailings strength with decreasing saturation levels, the threshold for the potential occurrence of excess pore pressure generation and strain-softening failure remains unclear. This study introduces a triaxial testing program designed to assess variations in undrained (closed system) shear strength for loose samples of low-plasticity gold tailings, prepared at different degrees of saturation using distinct saturation methods to address their impact. The findings reveal that as saturation decreases from complete saturation to partial saturation, both peak and remoulded strength increase, accompanied by a reduction in brittleness. Furthermore, the saturation history of the sample is observed to influence the brittleness of tailings under unsaturated behavior. A methodology to determine unsaturated brittle areas in a TSF is discussed.","PeriodicalId":54819,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering","volume":"152 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147920765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cambridge-type models use an associated flow rule, with their yield surface obtained by integrating the stress-dilatancy relationship. The size of the yield surface is controlled by the amount of mean effective stress. In the case of NorSand, its hardening rule links the variation in this mean stress to incremental plastic deviatoric strain. However, the current model’s hardening rule, referred to as NorSand-OHR, provides accurate simulation results only for drained conditions, failing to capture undrained behavior, particularly for loose samples. In contrast, bounding surface models with stress ratio–based hardening rules effectively simulate sand behavior under both drained and undrained loading conditions. To address this limitation, this paper incorporates a stress ratio–based concept into NorSand’s framework, improving control over evolution of the yield surface and resolving the issues with NorSand-OHR. The modified hardening rule, called NorSand-ηHR, calibrates its hardening parameter to capture flow liquefaction in loose samples under undrained loading. NorSand-ηHR does not introduce additional properties; instead, it adopts hardening properties compatible with it. This new hardening rule was introduced in a recently modified version of the NorSand model with a nonlinear state-dilatancy law. The model’s validity is confirmed by comparing its simulation results with both drained and undrained test data from the Toyoura sand database.","PeriodicalId":54819,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering","volume":"151 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147908944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The adsorption and desorption VSIs of expansive soil exhibit a distinctive hysteresis at low relative humidity (RH). While it is speculated that this hysteresis may be related to the interlayer hydration of expansive minerals, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we proposed a procedure that integrates experiments and molecular simulations to analyze this hysteresis. Through this procedure, we successfully reproduced the hysteresis and accurately captured the swelling and shrinkage of Na-montmorillonite (Na-Mt) in molecular simulations. The simulated hysteresis showed good agreement with experimental results. Through the analysis of microphysical states of hydrated montmorillonite, we revealed that this hysteresis mainly arises from the varying hydration states of interlayer cations during adsorption and desorption processes, and cations and hydrogen bonds are key to the stability of additional water molecules in desorption. Based on these findings, we proposed that the hysteresis amount at the 0.3 RH of a soil predominantly composed of Na-Mt is expected to exhibit a linear correlation with its internal specific surface area. This correlation was validated through experimental and numerical data. This study not only reveals the micromechanisms of VSI hysteresis at low RH and provides a potential direction for the utilization of this hysteresis, but also offers a reference for combining molecular simulations with experiments to investigate the water retention of expansive soils.","PeriodicalId":54819,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering","volume":"151 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147914488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), a distributed fiber optic sensing technology relying on Rayleigh light backscattering, can provide continuous spatial and temporal coverage along the length of a fiber optic cable extending tens of kilometers. In 2019, nearly six kilometers of fiber optic cable were installed at ∼1 m depth along an active upstream tailings dam in northern Canada. DAS seismic data were acquired at 400 Hz over a four-month period, from April to August 2021. We applied coda wave interferometry to a 120 m cable segment to obtain relative changes in seismic velocities (dv/v). Such coda waves are typically dominated by Rayleigh surface waves and dv/v can be used as a proxy for shear wave velocity changes. The dv/v estimates decrease by up to ∼1.9% over an initial two-month period of spring thaw and rainfall. Subsequently, dv/v recover by ∼1%, and generally show an inverse correlation with tailings pond levels up until the end of data acquisition. This correlation is supported by a known power-law relationship between shear wave velocity and effective stress. Rayleigh surface wave sensitivity kernels incorporating nearby seismic cone penetration testing data are used to estimate the approximate depths of dv/v sensitivity at ∼10 m. Despite active construction causing noise contamination, we obtain stable cross-correlation waveforms with as little as one hour of data per day. Overall, our results demonstrate how DAS can be used to augment geotechnical monitoring networks by providing in situ estimates of dv/v to inform changes in tailings dam performance over time.","PeriodicalId":54819,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering","volume":"151 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147892185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
