At least in part this is due to the complicated taxonomy and species richness of the main genus in these scrubs. In this study, we explored the regional diversity of Rubus scrubs in the Netherlands. In order to get a clear picture on their species composition free from personal preferences, we used a systematic-randomised sampling scheme to collect data in the three main Rubus regions in the Netherlands along three 100 km long transects. In 185 releves we recorded 67 known (and three unknown) Rubus species. The releves could be assigned to seven units described in the Dutch national vegetation classification: the Rubetum grati, Rubetum silvatici, Lonicero-Rubion silvatici, Dicrano-Juniperetum, Pruno-Rubetum vestiti, Pruno-Rubion radulae, and the Basal Community Rubus armeniacus. From our study we conclude that the regional variation in Rubus scrubs is substantial, and that only a part of this variation was described in the Dutch national vegetation overview. Especially within the Rubetum silvatici and the Pruno-Rubion radulae regionally distributed types can be distinguished, which seem to be confined to old landscapes, whereas younger landscapes only harbour common types, or are even devoid of bramble scrubs. The density of releves made in this study emphasize the importance of bramble scrubs in the landscape of north-western Europe, and we advocate more awareness of the value represented by bramble dominated communities. The vast number of Rubus species, many of which having a (very) restricted distribution area, complicate the classification of these scrubs, and can easily lead to the description of countless vegetation types with only a regional distribution. On the other hand, such regionally distributed communities can be of importance for nature conservation because they can harbour rare species, and they add to the regional identity and ?-diversity, and therefore should be recognised at some level.","PeriodicalId":54607,"journal":{"name":"Phytocoenologia","volume":"44 1","pages":"31-62"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1127/0340-269X/2013/0043-0564","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"63853331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These communities have been recently recognized by the European Community as a habitat of priority interest. The aim of the study is to perform a detailed and complete phytosociological scrutiny of this vegetation in the northern Apennines. Further aims are to detect the factors controlling the floristic variation within these communities and to analyse the variations of Nardus grasslands along a latitudinal gradient from the northern Alps to the southern Apennines. We processed a set of 134 phytosociological releves from the northern Apennines through a cluster analysis based on Kendall’s tau dissimilarity measure. Results showed the occurrence of two different associations of Nardus grasslands (Carlino caulescentis-Nardetum strictae and Violo ferrarinii-Nardetum strictae). Relations between their floristic composition and environmental variables were detected through Redundancy Analysis. The matrix of habitat factors included topographic variables and variables derived from Ellenberg’s indicator values. Elevation was the factor explaining most of the floristic variation. From the comparison of 44 synoptic tables from the Alps, Carpathians and Apennines, processed through a NMDS ordination, we detected two main phytogeographic and ecological thresholds along the latitudinal gradient.","PeriodicalId":54607,"journal":{"name":"Phytocoenologia","volume":"44 1","pages":"55-85"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1127/0340-269X/2014/0044-0574","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"63853239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We used a dataset comprising vegetation relevés, soil parameters and water table conditions, and explored their correlation. More precisely, we classifi ed the relevés into three phytosociological alliances (namely Phragmition communis, Salicornion fruticosae and Juncion maritimi) combining the previous information available and the use of PCA ordinations. We studied whether these alliances refl ect the main operating environmental gradients (conductivity, sodium absorption rate and water table dynamics) using a GLMM (generalized linear mixed model). The PCA refl ected a fair distinctiveness of Salicornion and Phragmition, whereas Juncion was a more heterogeneous unit, related to the varying dominance of different plant species. The three alliances exhibited signifi cant differences in environmental variables and therefore the phytosociological ordination refl ected at least partially the main operating environmental gradients. However the assemblage of alliances over the gradients varied between locations, suggesting that the initial species pool or plant dispersal capacity to some extent shapes the dynamics of spontaneous restoration in these marshlands.","PeriodicalId":54607,"journal":{"name":"Phytocoenologia","volume":"43 1","pages":"183-193"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1127/0340-269X/2013/0043-0550","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"63852135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Snow depth and duration are of particular importance for the fl oristic composition of mountain vegetation and we therefore wanted to quantify the importance of the date of snowmelt and thereby discuss possible effects of future climate change. In two mountain areas with calcium-rich bedrocks, 106 sample plots (2 x 2 m) were selected by a stratifi ed random sampling, to cover a broad range of snow cover, topography and vegetation composition. Study plots include both the northern boreal zone (NB), the low alpine zone (LA), and the middle alpine zone (MA). Soil data, soil temperature and day of snowmelt were sampled from all plots. Fifteen vegetation (cluster) types were classifi ed by the use of TWINSPAN, and these were well separated in a DCA (Detrended Correspondence Analysis) ordination. A CVA (Canonical Variates Analysis) and Monte Carlo Permutation tests showed that the vegetation types were signifi cantly associated with most of the measured environmental variables, with relative altitude, potassium, and Julian day of snowmelt as the most important variables. All study plots showed relatively high values for soil richness and were signifi cantly negatively correlated with the Julian day when the soil temperature threshold (6 °C) was reached. The signifi cant relationships between altitude, Julian day of snowmelt, and vegetation composition indicate that major changes may be expected as a consequence of an earlier snowmelt in a warmer world.","PeriodicalId":54607,"journal":{"name":"Phytocoenologia","volume":"43 1","pages":"207-223"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1127/0340-269X/2013/0043-0534","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"63851590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
