The 1875 Waterside Station in Londonderry was abandoned after bomb damage in the 1970s, and its hastily built replacement nearby soon reached capacity. A European-Union-funded project has restored the old rail terminus to its former role and added a bus station, park-and-ride facility and links to the city’s greenways for cyclists and pedestrians. Civil engineers are well-placed to lead this by carrying out reuse appraisals, commonly known in the buildings sector as ‘pre-redevelopment audits’. The paper sets current practice and emerging policies regarding reuse in the construction sector, then describes the steps for undertaking an effective audit.
