And yet despite these revisions, contemporary readers may find that the volume does not adequately engage with the problematic and gendered history of the Grimms’ collection. While the Handbuch includes what information is available regarding the sources and contributors for each tale, a definitive resource in Grimm and fairy-tale studies such as this one could do more to problematize the subtle erasure of female collaborators and further contextualize the imbalance between unsung female labor and male fame. Fragen wirft vor diesem Hintergrund auch der Begriff der ,,Kultur“ auf, der sich im Titel des Bandes findet, allerdings ebenfalls nicht explizit reflektiert wird. Implizit gelingt es bereits den Beiträgen der ersten Sektion, den Blick nicht auf die Literatur zu verengen, sondern diese in ihren vielfältigen Kontexten zu verorten. Umso mehr gilt das für die vier spezifischen Zugänge zur ,,Kultur“, die die Beiträge der zweiten Sektion des Bandes eröffnen; allerdings wirkt die Auswahl der Bereiche etwas zufällig. Während sich die Beiträge kundig den politischen Schriften Jean Pauls (Helmut J. Schneider) und Saul Aschers (Bernd Fischer), den Verbindungen der napoleonischen Kampagnen mit den Naturwissenschaften (Mary Orr) und dem in ganz Europa adaptierten Modell der Écoles Polytechniques widmen (Andrew Cusack), bleiben Bereiche wie die Archäologie (für die die Ägypten-Kampagne Napoleons wichtig war), das Militär oder das Recht weitgehend unbeachtet. Ein blinder Fleck bleibt auch die politische Funktionalisierung Napoleons im Vormärz; letzterer wird dann im Titel der dritten Sektion – ,,from Vormärz to the Present“ (259) – zwar aufgerufen, aber untersucht werden die Napoleon-Rezeption im naturalistischen Drama (Michael White), in der Musik (Wolf Kittler) und im Film (Susanne Kord). In Susanne Kords Beitrag zu Napoleon als ,,Screen Icon“ (303) steht die Zeichenhaftigkeit der Figur Napoleon explizit zur Diskussion und Kord stellt zu Recht heraus, dass es sich bei dieser Figur um ein äußerst flexibles Zeichen handle, ein ,,empty vessel“ (322), das sogar gegensätzliche politische Haltungen ausdrücken kann. Die Bandbreite dieses Zeichens führen die vielfältigen Einschätzungen Napoleons, die die Beiträge des Bandes zitieren, eindrücklich vor. Insgesamt ermöglicht der Band informierte und vielgestaltige Einblicke in die ambivalente deutschsprachige Napoleon-Rezeption, bleibt allerdings manchmal zu sehr biografischen und einflussgeschichtlichen Modellen verpflichtet. Zu kurz kommen dabei die Reflexion auf die Funktionsweisen des einleitend lediglich schlagwortartig benannten ,,German cultural imaginary“ (2) und der Einbezug der medialen Dimensionen dieser Rezeptionsprozesse, die Napoleon als Medienspektakel (s.o.) verdient hätte. The volume makes a significant intervention in existing scholarship on the visual representation of the Holocaust by moving beyond photography and film through the focus on drawing. As the editors state, “the vast number of drawings by prisoners are overlooked. These drawings bear witness and resist closure in many ways—and provide a singular perspective on the extermination of the Jews” (13). Building on Jörn Wendland’s foundational research in this area (Das Lager von Bild zu Bild. Narrative Bildserien von Häftlingen aus NS-Zwangslagern, 2017), several contributions explore early representations of the Holocaust while also considering the specifics and variations among works that use both text and image (see in particular the contributions by Kathrin Hoffman-Curtius on “post-war graphic cycles” and Emil Gruber who explores “early representations of the Holocaust between caricature and comic book”). From this we see that early illustrations, specifically drawn representations of the Holocaust, need to be considered alongside the documentary films that helped establish what Daniel Magilow and Lisa Silverman have termed “a visual lexicon of Holocaust representation” (Holocaust Representations in History, 2015: 24). Furthermore, the volume provides many examples of how contemporary comics, since Spiegelman’s MAUS, both repeat and reflect upon the images in this lexicon. The integration of illustrations within the articles, as opposed to in an appendix at the end of the book, invites the reader to follow along with the authors’ analyses. However, many of the reproductions are so small that they impede this. Like Mickey in the cover image, one needs to reach for a magnifying glass. Regrettable further are the significant number of typos and linguistic infelicities, which at times hinder comprehension.
