Perhaps the most often-cited original section is Alfred’s introductory Descriptio of the island of Great Britain (though Ireland is not entirely ignored) and its peoples (pp. 3–10 in this edition), which includes a remarkable example of the fascination of his generation for the history of gentes. It became a source for a similar passage by the fourteenth-century universal chronicler Ranulf Higden in his Polychronicon. Another such independent passage is Geoffrey’s engagement with Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae. It is this last feature of Alfred’s History which is Dr Slevin’s argument as to why his work deserves a lot more attention, at least in the field of historiography. In a fascinating chapter (pp. xxxii–xlii) Dr Slevin analyses how Alfred became quite as caught up with Geoffrey of Monmouth’s fictional history of early Britain as his literary contemporaries. But in attempting to reconcile Geoffrey’s fables with his other sources for early British history Alfred experienced doubts, and in many ways signalled his caution about the Historia Regum Britanniae to his readers, yet all the while genuflecting to his contemporaries’ urgent desire to accept its historicity. In this way, Alfred acts for us as a conduit of the doubts and debate current in his intellectual community, a world of the mind more far flung than the valley of the River Hull and the archdeaconry of the East Riding. One of the strengths of this edition is the delicate drawing out of the network of interlinking writers and minds that lies behind the construction of Alfred’s History. A lot can be learned about the way he uses the work of other writers who were his sources and presumably correspondents, and creates from it a unified narrative. The edition is a skilful exercise in twelfth-century historiography above anything else. The excellent translation of the Latin text by Lynda Lockyer is backed up by pertinent and expansive historical footnotes, presumably by the editor. They neatly signal and amplify the historiographical argument behind the book. I doubt that this edition, for all its virtues, will bring people to Alfred of Beverley to learn anything much about the history of medieval England. But it argues a new importance for him as a central figure in the mid twelfth-century efflorescence of historical writing and method.","PeriodicalId":53945,"journal":{"name":"Northern History","volume":"60 1","pages":"265 - 267"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49156499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, devoting one’s life to scholarship was not inexpensive, and these self-made scholars were often left scrambling to find reliable sources of income on which to live. This essay reconsiders the intersection between class and scholarship especially among Anglo-Saxonists, by examining the life of Joseph Mayer (d. 1886), a Liverpool jeweller and silversmith, who is best known as a collector of antiquities and the co-founder of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire (1848). This essay explores the sources of Mayer’s growing wealth, the objectives of his investment in antiquities and the extent of his involvement in antiquarian societies in Liverpool, London, and abroad. We conclude that his identity as a tradesman was never fully erased by either his fortune or his scholarly contributions. We contend that an overlooked part of Mayer’s legacy is his patronage of middle-class scholars such as Charles Roach Smith, Thomas Wright, Frederick Fairholt, Joseph Pulzsky and Eliza Meteyard, each of whom helped document his collections but also counted upon his largesse. However, the dangers of relying on a private patron became apparent when Mayer’s interests changed later in life; the fact that so few other forms of support existed for scholars of modest background meant that many faced considerable challenges in finding financial stability in their final years.","PeriodicalId":53945,"journal":{"name":"Northern History","volume":"60 1","pages":"168 - 202"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48426848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its management – first under regional syndicates, afterwards, from 1739, by the Cockshutt family – shows the advantages and pitfalls of family businesses. There is new insight into the Cockshutts and their relationship to leading engineers and scientists, and into the personal interactions and industrial networks so important to eighteenth-century business ventures.","PeriodicalId":53945,"journal":{"name":"Northern History","volume":"60 1","pages":"52 - 73"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47677074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Langley then again fell foul of the party by contesting unofficially and losing a by-election in Greenwich in 1873. Finally, at the 1874 general election he was Gladstone’s official Liberal partner in this two member seat but finished narrowly last. This was his final attempt to enter parliament. Langley’s eventual downfall came from his last campaign. He was deeply concerned at the poor and insanitary houses that working class families were forced to live in, not least by the burgeoning of the population in the cities. In the larger cities the population had increased by up to five times between 1801 and 1871. Typically he took positive action and he became the driving force behind the ‘Artizans, Labourers’ and General Dwellings Company’ which, among other developments built the Shaftesbury Estate in Battersea. Considerable sums of money passed through Langley’s hands and he was accused of using sums for his own purposes. Langley was taken to court and there he argued that he was only holding the money temporarily in trust for the company. Given his long record of campaigning and of philanthropy he was unlikely to have misused funds but he was found guilty and sentenced to eighteen months with hard labour. By this time his health was poor and this experience was disastrous for him and his family. He was released on compassionate grounds in 1877 and survived a further fifteen years in very poor health. David George has done a fine job of bringing into the light the life of a dedicated and effective radical campaigner who until now has been too little known.","PeriodicalId":53945,"journal":{"name":"Northern History","volume":"60 1","pages":"135 - 136"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46598197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was a remarkable turnaround in fortunes, as the post-war Coalition had won the 1918 General Election with a notional majority of 333. Over the intervening four years, there had been attempts to make the temporary coalition arrangement a permanent feature of British politics. However, in the final years of the Coalition, the Conservatives became increasingly disenchanted with government policy and with the personality of the Prime Minister. Nevertheless, some Tories fought for the continuation of the Coalition to the bitter end, and one of those politicians was the leader of the Liverpool Conservative Party, Sir Archibald Salvidge. Although Lloyd George’s Coalition government has been extensively examined by historians, the pivotal role that Salvidge played during these years has been overlooked. This article, therefore, provides the first contemporary examination of Salvidge’s efforts to make the Coalition agreement permanent, often against the wishes of both his own party’s rank-and-file and his supporters in Liverpool.","PeriodicalId":53945,"journal":{"name":"Northern History","volume":"60 1","pages":"74 - 93"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"58901071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
