In lubricated contacts, tensile stresses can occur in the lubricant as a result of cavitation dynamics. These tensile stresses, hardly known with respect to duration and magnitude, are investigated with a simulation model consisting of Reynolds equation and Rayleigh-Plesset equation for the negative squeeze motion of circular plate and spherical cap. The tensile stresses are practically relevant in calculating the opening times of valves (oil stiction). It may assumed that the short-time tensile stresses occurring in the simulation model also occur in other cases and have an influence on material fatigue and wear of the components involved and are thus practically relevant.","PeriodicalId":53690,"journal":{"name":"Tribologie und Schmierungstechnik","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43581726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the properties of the grease are strongly non-Newtonian, multiple measurements were performed to parameterize two viscosity models, the Herschel-Bulkley and the Palacios-Palacios model. These models are integrated into an EHL simulation of the sealing contact and qualitatively compared for two temperatures. For that system, the total friction force is rather unaffected by the choice of the viscosity model. In addition, qualitatively similar results with about 10 % deviation from the non-Newtonian behavior could be obtained using a Newtonian approximation of the lubricant.","PeriodicalId":53690,"journal":{"name":"Tribologie und Schmierungstechnik","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45683788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different greases provide different lubricity to the sealing system. A test and evaluation method was developed that allows to assess the lubricity of different greases and to compare them with each other. The test and evaluation method consists of a test run and a subsequent analysis of the test components. The test run comprises a 24-hour speed collective and is performed on a test rig using real sealing system components. For the evaluation method, eight criteria are analysed, which are rated suitable for evaluating starved lubrication. The criteria include parameters measured during the test run, such as friction torque and temperature, as well as parameters inspected in the subsequent examination of all test components. All criteria are assessed and combined to an overall score, that allows to directly compare different greases with each other. The test and evaluation method developed reveals significant differences between 23 greases examined. Thus, the lubricity of greases in sealing systems can be analysed and compared much more quickly than in the past. Thanks to the rapid testing and focused evaluation of the relevant criteria, greases can be tested much more cost- and resource-efficiently than before.","PeriodicalId":53690,"journal":{"name":"Tribologie und Schmierungstechnik","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47434408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, the environment is protected by the absence of hazardous lubricants. However, media-lubrication increases tribocorrosive attack on the bearing surface. Therefore, the tribocorrosion resistance of the bearing surface can be increased by a thermal surface treatment called low-temperature plasma nitriding. The produced “expanded martensite” in martensitic steels features a high hardness with comparatively good corrosion resistance. Tribocorrosion tests in 0.9 % NaCl-solution show that the material loss could be reduced by 70 % due to expanded martensite compared to the initial state of the steel.","PeriodicalId":53690,"journal":{"name":"Tribologie und Schmierungstechnik","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47324262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In both tests, the excitation directions include the mating direction as well as the orthogonal directions corresponding to the mating direction. Different measurement techniques are used to identify similarities and differences between the wear resulting from these test types. The results show fundamentally different critical directions with regard to wear for the respective test types. Furthermore, it is shown that the induced movement of the fretting tests lead to a higher degree of wear than the vibration tests. Also, it is not adequately possible to establish a direct relationship between the induced movement and the excitation amplitude caused by the attached wires since there is a superposition of several movements in the case of real applications.","PeriodicalId":53690,"journal":{"name":"Tribologie und Schmierungstechnik","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68958297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the last years a series of energy efficient bearings have been developed using specific designs or new materials aiming to reduce the losses of a bearing without sacrificing its load carrying capacity. The effect that these designs have on the global energy consumption hasn’t been quantified until now. A methodology to estimate the energy losses of the usage of a specific bearing type on a global scale is presented in this paper. The method, that is based on current standards, provides a first approximation for the determination of the energy losses of bearings and it is tested for its plausibility. The pros and cons of the proposed method are discussed, and a proposal is made on how to calculate the potential energy efficiency of newer designs.","PeriodicalId":53690,"journal":{"name":"Tribologie und Schmierungstechnik","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41819317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
