Adolescent students, a population which is particularly vulnerable to advertising’s influence, utilized the analytic tool of metaphor elicitation to abstract away from the vast multimodal information that characterizes commercials, and simplify this information in the linguistic formulation of metaphor (e.g., super-pharm is a circus). The contrived link between the given brand (e.g., Super-Pharm pharmaceutical stores) and its metaphorically-attached source domain (e.g., circus) was emphasized to increase awareness of how the commercial was structured to deceive consumers. The study evaluated the intervention using a quasi-experimental design, showing that metaphor elicitation facilitated the knowledge, critical attitudes, and responsible behavioral inclinations of participants concerning advertising media. The study suggests that using the linguistic formulation of metaphor can help adolescents critically interpret the increasingly-deceptive commercial landscape.

While existing scholarship on shop signs were focused on interpreting signages that are mostly visible from the exterior (e.g. Collins & Slembrouck, 2007; Malinowski, 2009; Ong, Ghesquière, & Serwe, 2013), this study examines publicly displayed material artefacts, and the dialogical relationship between customers and waiters, taking into account one aspect of Scollon and Scollon’s (2003) perceptual space which is highly visible in a restaurant: tastes. Through interviews, participant observations and geosemiotic analysis of signs inside and on the exterior of restaurants, I evinced a configuration of semiotic aggregates (Scollon & Scollon, 2003) drawing from my ethnographic work on ethnic foodscapes. Findings from the study suggest that multiple social actors contributed to shaping cosmopolitanism in a college town.

Sign authors employed a wide variety of linguistic codes and symbolic visual\u0000 resources to subvert state authority, urge fellow citizens to action, and advocate a number of other political goals. Drawing on the\u0000 methodology of Linguistic Landscape (LL) studies, the current effort investigates the relationship between linguistic code and factors such\u0000 as sign location, medium, length, and thematic content. Multinomial logistic regression analysis reveals a significant relationship between\u0000 sign code and medium, for example, as handwritten signs show more linguistic diversity than printed signs. Qualitative analysis focuses on\u0000 sign authors, use of the symbolic and semiotic resources associated with these codes. This study of the ephemeral, transitory LL of Egyptian\u0000 sit-in sites demonstrates the many and varied ways in which citizen sign authors manipulate concepts of formality, code choice, and imagery\u0000 to encourage audiences to take up their messages as resources for social action in their own worlds.

This surgical boom is reflected in several Linguistic Landscape resources including the internet, where a growing number of cosmetic surgery centers advertise their procedures. Particularly common among these procedures is breast augmentation, which many Colombian women have at a young age. This article reports on a study which drew on critical linguistic landscape and feminist theories to explore how local cosmetic surgery websites contribute to the commodification of women’s breasts, and its implications for users of these websites. Data collected for this study included text and images from 12 local websites advertising cosmetic surgery in Colombia, including breast augmentation. Data analysis showed that these websites contributed to the commodification of women’s bodies by using a series of ideological mechanisms. Implications for users of these public spaces include asking critical questions about these websites and becoming more socially active in their consumption.

In exploring different\u0000 ethnographic dimensions to retail storefronts, we show how women, many of whom are college-educated, married, and new mothers,\u0000 play a significant role in redefining Brooklyn and cultural norms of motherhood more broadly. Yet, as newly arriving women\u0000 emerge as key players in the gentrification project, they experience backlash against their public roles. We explore how women\u0000 also employ race, inequality, and patriarchal notions of heteronormative sexuality as a cover for their public challenges to\u0000 patriarchal power. Drawing on visual ethnography, interviews, and digital archival material we argue that the ambiguity of word\u0000 play accomplishes both the pushing of normative boundaries as well as the protective cover of public meanings.

We analyze these examples with the help of a theoretical\u0000 framework that offers a dynamic conceptualization of citizenship and its semiotic manifestations, drawing on Fraser’s (1995) distinction between affirmative and transformative strategies of social justice. In line\u0000 with the remit of this special issue, we highlight the importance of taking sexuality as an entry point for Linguistic Landscape\u0000 analysis. More specifically, we argue that a focus on sexuality in space opens up a window into the affective,\u0000 intimate and embodied dimensions of politics.

Previously\u0000 described in touristic literature as marking out spaces for foreign gay men, this article draws upon an ethnographic study of how\u0000 signage produces queer space in Japan to argue that English instead constructs a sense of cosmopolitan worldliness. The\u0000 ethnography also reveals that participants within Ni-chōme’s gay bar sub-culture contrast this cosmopolitan identity with a\u0000 “traditional” identity indexed by Japanese-language signage. In exploring how Japanese men navigate Ni-chōme’s signage, this\u0000 article deploys Piller and Takahashi’s (2006) notion of “language desire” to\u0000 investigate the role of LL in influencing individual queer men’s sense(s) of self. This article thus broadens the focus of LL\u0000 research to account for how engagement with an LL may impact identity construction, with an emphasis placed on how learning to\u0000 “read” an LL influences the formation of sexual identities.
