Effects of physical and chemical parameters on carotenoid contents in isolated microalgal species have been investigated. The variables of shaking rate, nitrogen concentration and light intensity affect biomass production and the synthesis of carotenoids in the green microalgae were investigated using the statistical design by Box-Behnken (BBD) employing Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Furthermore, the optimized cultivation conditions using BBD for Chlorella vulgaris, Ankistrodesmus convolutus, Dunaliel-la salina, Tetraselmis striata were determined using the spectrophotometric method to enhance carotenoid concentration. A. convolutus within the green algae was detected with the highest carotenoid concentration. The optimum conditions results indicated that the growth of A. convolutus (0.55 mg/L) and production of total carotenoids (25.1138 mg/g biomass) were found at the stirrer rate of 100 rpm under the light intensity of 100 μE/m 2 s, and in the nutrient component of 8.82 mM NaNO 3 . These conditions were validated experimentally for total carotenoid yield (24.13 mg/g biomass). After that the production was performed in a flat-plate photobioreactor with a volume of 6L based on the optimized conditions and the carotenoid profile was defined by HPLC-DAD using standards such as violaxanthin, astaxanthin and β -carotene. This study proposes that the RSM approach can be used to define optimal conditions for large-scale production of carotenoids by A. convolutus .","PeriodicalId":52866,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences and Engineering","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49347182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To approach maximum by catch reduction with minimum loss of targeted catch, fisheries need to have information on the environmental and anthropogenic factors in multi species seas like the Mediterranean. In this study, we used generalized additive models (GAM) to by the catch ratio of purse seine fishery to determine the effects of environmental variables. The data were collected during each fishing trip in the 2018-2019 fishing season that covers the time period between September 1st and April 15th. There were 26 species (66.216 mt in total) recorded as by catch and the rates of by catch species in the total by catch amount varied between 0.001% and 23.1%. In terms of habitat of by catch species, the total ratios of benthopelagic, demersal and pelagic species were 52% , 28% and 20%, respectively. Significant interactions observed indicate that the fluctuations in by catch ratios differed by depth and sea surface temperature, whereas the quarters of year and the moon phases were not found to affect by catch ratios significantly.","PeriodicalId":52866,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences and Engineering","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44230185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article proposes a fully validated ICP-MS technique to investigate the impacts of the GDF on the water quality of the stream and provide a human health risk estimation. Water sampling was carried out at four different stations and in tap water since the stream is the primary source of drinking water for the inhabitants of the town. Quantification of selected toxic metals (As, Pb, Cd, Hg, Sb, Al, and Ni) in conjunction with the essential and other elements (Se, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Zn, and Co) was performed by the use of the previously validated ICP-MS method. Once water quality index (WQI), heavy metal pollution index (HPI), and heavy metal evaluation index (HEI) were computed, the health risk assessment was studied according to the US EPA’s method. Although the stations (2, 3, 4, and tap water) showed excellent water quality, station-1, which is the closest one to the facility, was classified as poor water quality. Lifetime cancer risk (LCR) was only significant both for adults and children in station-1. In addition, low risk regarding non-carcinogenic health hazards was found for children. The results indicate that the facility decreases the water quality of this stream and is possibly responsible for LCR. In conclusion, the ecological environment and human health should be protected by further monitoring the effect of the GDF on the ecological system.","PeriodicalId":52866,"journal":{"name":"Aquatic Sciences and Engineering","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46858198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
