Methods: Cross-sectional, exploratory, and descriptive study, including 134 older adults who answered a digital questionnaire, between January and July 2022. A word cloud was used to identify stereotypes. Prejudice was assessed using the Anxiety about Aging scale and discrimination was measured using the Ageism Survey. In addition, a semi-structured questionnaire was used to identify the types of discrimination experienced in the pandemic. Results: Older persons tend to reproduce stereotypes associated with experience and wisdom, with the presence of biopsychosocial changes and dependence, and enjoyment of life. Most older persons reported discrimination (93.50%), especially perceived through “telling jokes about older persons” (72.39%). In the pandemic setting, the most perceived discriminatory manifestations referred to policies, practices, or norms related to the pandemic (38.06%) and when reading and watching news in the newspaper, the Internet, and television (35.07%). Conclusion: The findings suggest that older persons experienced ageism during the pandemic and show the need for programs and policies aimed at education on ageing, so as to reduce the stigmas of old age and discrimination, aiming to foster healthy ageing.","PeriodicalId":52782,"journal":{"name":"Geriatrics Gerontology and Aging","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135496148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: This cross-sectional quantitative study included noninstitutionalized individuals aged ≥ 60 years living in Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil. In the descriptive data analysis, the frequency distributions were evaluated and multiple logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with fall risk. The ROC curve was used to determine the logistic model’s accuracy. Results: The fall rate was higher among women (73.30%) and the 70–79 year age group (42.50%). A total of 80.70% of the participants used ≥ 1 medication and 32.60% used 2–3 medications. According to the odds ratio calculation, use of medications with possible drug interactions increased the occurrence of falls by 47.00% in the last 12 months. The model’s accuracy was 55.00%. Conclusions: The results indicate that polypharmacy and the use of certain drug classes in older adults can lead to potential drug interactions, making them more susceptible to adverse events, such as postural hypotension, vertigo, dizziness, and loss of balance, all of which increase fall risk. Educational measures for older adults on correct medication use are needed.","PeriodicalId":52782,"journal":{"name":"Geriatrics Gerontology and Aging","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71150761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: This retrospective cohort study used data from the Frailty in Older Brazilians (FIBRA) Study. Home interviews were carried out with the relatives of deceased older adults. Descriptive statistical analyses were performed, including adjusted prevalence ratios through Poisson regression. Results: A total of 192 family members participated (64.58% women). The mean age of the deceased was 80.59 years (59.90% women; 27.08% with no formal education). In the year before death, 51.34% had fatigue, 43.68% had pain, 42.63% had anorexia, 41.27% had dyspnea, and 41.21% suffered a fall. Most died either at home (52.10%) or in the hospital (41.66%). The most frequent causes of death were circulatory and respiratory system diseases and neoplasms; 29.63% died suddenly, 51.05% were admitted to an intensive care unit, 52.60% were hospitalized, 58.76% used pain medication, and 27.13% received home care. Relative to non-frailty, baseline frailty was associated with dependence (prevalence ratio = 2.52) and pain medication use (prevalence ratio = 1.52) in the last year of life. Conclusions: Signs and symptoms of suffering in the last year of life were high among community-dwelling older adults, highlighting the need to support them and their families through provide palliative care.","PeriodicalId":52782,"journal":{"name":"Geriatrics Gerontology and Aging","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71152043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to understand older patients’ perceptions of this experience through their narratives. Methods: A qualitative study with Thematic Oral History and thematic analysis. We conducted open-ended interviews in which older patients narrated their perceptions of this experience. Results: Twelve patients were interviewed from December/2021 to January/2022, and 2 themes emerged: older patients’ experience of teleconsultation and possibilities and challenges of telemedicine. Some patients did not identify the call as a teleconsultation. Regarding possibilities, patients reported satisfaction and convenience in specific circumstances. As for challenges, patients reported concerns about the effectiveness of communication and need for physical examination. Conclusion: Teleconsultation is well accepted, as long as situations that require face-to-face interactions are considered. Considering person-centered medicine, listening to the narratives of older people contributes to a better structuring of telemedicine services in geriatrics.","PeriodicalId":52782,"journal":{"name":"Geriatrics Gerontology and Aging","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71152910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: The oral health-related quality of life of older adults (n = 194; mean [standard deviation] age = 78.93 [9.10]) was assessed by the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index and the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaires. Prosthetic rehabilitation status was recorded according to the absence of teeth and use of dental prostheses. Dental prosthesis condition was considered good or poor based on stability, retention, occlusion, vertical dimension, and defects. Poisson regression models were plotted to analyze the data (α = 0.05). Results:Lower Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index scores were associated with edentulism with denture use only on one jaw (B = -0.05) and poor dental prosthesis stability (B = -0.04). Similarly, edentulous participants with denture only on one jaw (B = 0.59) and those wearing dental prostheses with poor stability (B = 0.36) are more likely to achieve higher Oral Health Impact Profile scores. Also, lower Oral Health Impact Profile scores were associated with denture defects (B = -0.34). Conclusion:In summary, the oral health-related quality of life of older adults living in longterm care facilities is negatively impacted by edentulism with denture only on one jaw and use of dental prostheses with poor stability. Therefore, long-term care facilities should provide oral health training to caregivers, include dental professionals in the staff, and articulate demands with oral health teams in the primary care system.","PeriodicalId":52782,"journal":{"name":"Geriatrics Gerontology and Aging","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71151083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
