In Open and Distance Learning (ODL), adult learners’ engagement, persistence, and well-being depend on how learning goals, digital tools, institutional rules, communities, roles, and emotional experience work together. This conceptual paper brings Activity-Centered Design (ACD) and Emotional Design into a single theory-synthesis framework, informed by an integrative review of activity theory, temporally extended user experience, adult ODL, and sustainable creative education. The proposed logic moves from diagnosis to design: ACD locates contradictions in the activity system, Emotional Design examines how those contradictions are experienced over time, and the combined lens guides structural and experiential responses. An illustrative online studio case shows how this approach changes decisions about critique, scheduling, tool integration, feedback, community, and recovery for working adult creative practitioners. Design heuristics, candidate evaluation indicators, ethical safeguards, and boundary conditions are also proposed. The framework remains a conceptual proposition for empirical testing; it is not presented as evidence of established effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":524244,"journal":{"name":"Interaction Design & Architectures","volume":"231 1","pages":"62-77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149151698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper offers a practice-led reflection of distributed co-design through two decades of intergenerational projects, from early challenges to its current state, using temporal structure, technology mediation, and participation structure as interdependent lenses of inquiry. It defines the terms distributed, online, and remote as orthogonal dimensions of co-design practice. This study investigates design strategies based on the Dual-Systems Theory to promote mindful digital interactions and sustainable usage habits. The research explores three key questions: (1) What drives excessive SFV consumption among young adults? (2) How can design strategies informed by the Dual-Systems Theory foster healthier SFV engagement? (3) How can co-design methods create tools for regulating SFV consumption? An online survey of 54 participants aged 18–25 examined usage patterns and motivations for overuse. Insights from the survey and a literature review guided a co-design process to develop a mobile application prototype that incorporates interventions for regulating SFV use. The study offers actionable strategies and theoretical contributions to digital wellbeing, emphasising responsible design for healthier social media habits.","PeriodicalId":524244,"journal":{"name":"Interaction Design & Architectures","volume":"29 1","pages":"181-212"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149151700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper develops the concept of “eco-accidentalism” as a more design-oriented framework for positioning sustainability as the obvious default option that consumers can choose with minimal friction. The argument is anchored in the creative industries, where products, services, brand narratives, and lived experiences shape cultural norms and consumer expectations. Drawing on work in sustainable design, behavioural defaults, choice architecture, premium strategy, and critical debates on sustainability claims, the paper proposes five design levers to embed sustainable defaults across product and service touchpoints. After that, it shows how the framework works through selected applications in creative settings, followed by a critical, document-based analysis of Nespresso’s “Da Chicco a Chicco” initiative. Overall, the paper offers a methodological and teaching-focused framework for design practice and education, while emphasising ethical safeguards, transparency, reversibility, and evidence-backed claims.","PeriodicalId":524244,"journal":{"name":"Interaction Design & Architectures","volume":"86 1","pages":"113-129"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149151689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Framing ODD as a design methodology rather than a mere production model, the contribution conceptualises DTs not as inherently sustainable but as enabling devices situated within ODD practices and the communities that sustain them. Two experimental initiatives developed by an academic makerspace within the Creative Europe Distributed Design Platform ground an empirical analysis read through three analytical dimensions: Social, Technical, and Systemic. The findings reveal that while DTs foster capacity-building, through the translation of tacit knowledge and forking, and democratised access, significant barriers persist, from regulatory tensions to infrastructural dependence and the cognitive demands of long-term maintenance. This situated relevance is not incidental to ODD’s sustainability infrastructure, but points to a structural conditionality: the same place-based grounding that constrains scalability is also what sustains ODD’s capacity-building potential for the creative industries.","PeriodicalId":524244,"journal":{"name":"Interaction Design & Architectures","volume":"36 1","pages":"130-164"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149151697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes an empirical evaluation framework that utilizes a user-centered mobile application prototype as a proof-of-concept to foster methodological dialogue through participatory design. Grounded in the emerging framework of Human-Building Interaction (HBI), the study evaluates how interactive digital tools can reduce cognitive load and enhance decision-making accuracy. Following an expert heuristic evaluation (N=3) that demonstrated substantial agreement (K=0.578), usability testing (N=10) based on ISO 9241-11 standards showed high effectiveness (90.2%) and efficiency (89.85%). A comparative pilot study indicated that mobile interactivity can enhance spatial comprehension and user agency within exploratory consultation settings compared to traditional static methods. By providing rigorous metrics for engagement, this research presents a scalable prototype that highlights both the potentials and accessibility barriers of digital-first workflows as digital catalysts in design practice.","PeriodicalId":524244,"journal":{"name":"Interaction Design & Architectures","volume":"43 1","pages":"96-112"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149151690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The selected papers were analysed through action coding, encapsulating the papers’ approach—designing, evaluating, discussing, and structural coding, indicating the papers’ core topics— human creativity, training, specific tasks, collaborative environments, ethical concern, interaction, co-creation, communication, decision-making, trust, and team dynamics. The papers are analysed and visualised in a network based on their assigned codes, revealing their relationships to one another. This interpretative effort contributes to knowledge by developing a bottom-up coding approach to identify key discourse clusters within the rapidly evolving literature on HAI collaboration, defining and discussing such clusters, and recognising relevant trends in the debate. The review highlights a current emphasis on practically driven studies over critical and reflective ones, suggesting the need for more integrated approaches that combine both perspectives.","PeriodicalId":524244,"journal":{"name":"Interaction Design & Architectures","volume":"15 1","pages":"258-285"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149151691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through an open inquiry, we gathered insights from architecture students, educators, and practitioners on their preferences, experiences, and perceptions of tool selection. Our results show that tool preference in ideation is not only shaped by the inherent advantages and disadvantages of sketching or Computer-Aided Design (CAD) but also by personal characteristics, educational frameworks, and contextual dynamics. Rather than positioning tools in opposition, the results suggest that sketching and digital tools support different modes of engagement within this communicative process. Findings indicate that the optimal ideation tool varies by individual context, suggesting that effective design education should address diverse student needs, enabling a balance between digital proficiency and foundational sketching skills.","PeriodicalId":524244,"journal":{"name":"Interaction Design & Architectures","volume":"26 1","pages":"286-309"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149151686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
