Participants were recruited through online communities of two universities. The final sample consisted of nine nursing students from these universities. Data were collected across five sessions, including orientation, three group discussions with photovoice activities, and individual interviews. Participants captured photographs reflecting their perceptions of older adults, provided descriptions, and engaged in group discussions that were guided in part by the principles of the SHOWeD technique. Data were analyzed using photovoice procedures and thematic analysis, following a process of selecting, contextualizing, and categorizing data to generate themes and subthemes.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Analysis of 72 photographs and associated narratives yielded three main themes: (1) \"Confusion and rigidity revealed within a changing society,\" (2) \"A sense of distance formed through experiences of norm-breaking and social isolation,\" (3) \"Ambivalent perceptions shaped by everyday, welfare, and cultural experiences.\" Participants demonstrated complex perceptions of older adults, reflecting both negative stereotypes and recognition of their engagement in cultural activities.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Nursing students' perceptions of older adults reflected ambivalent attitudes, with negative stereotypes coexisting with positive views. This study examined HH adherence and its associated factors among nursing staff in long-term care facilities.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This cross-sectional study surveyed 128 nursing staff members (registered nurses, n=78; nurse assistants, n=50). Data were collected from 35 long-term care facilities across South Korea. HH adherence was calculated from self-reported HH performances and opportunities based on the WHO Five Moments, and HH perception and infrastructure were assessed using adapted WHO-based instruments.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The mean clinical experience of participants was 14.58±10.12 years. The HH adherence rate was 70.85%. The mean scores of HH perception and infrastructure were 73.41±11.65 out of 84 points and 32.42±5.18 out of 40 points, respectively. HH adherence was significantly associated with infrastructure (β=0.22, p=.042) and working in a specialized unit (β=0.22, p=.013).</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>This study identified HH infrastructure quality and working in specialized units as significant factors associated with HH adherence among nursing staff in long-term care facilities. These findings suggest that strengthening HH infrastructure and considering unit-level working conditions may contribute to improved adherence. Facility-wide multimodal strategies that combine infrastructure improvement with ongoing education are recommended to sustain HH practices in long-term care settings. {"title":"Fall-related factors in older adults by frailty status: A cross-sectional study.","authors":"Jiyeon Kim","doi":"10.17079/jkgn.2025.00423","DOIUrl":"10.17079/jkgn.2025.00423","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Purpose: </strong>This descriptive study aimed to identify the factors associated with falls in older adults according to frailty status.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Data from 9,955 older adults in the 2023 National Survey of Older Koreans were analyzed. Differences in demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related behaviors by frailty status were evaluated using the Rao-Scott X2 test. A complex-sample general linear model was used to evaluate the frequency of falls. Complex-sample multiple logistic regression analyses were performed with falls as the dependent variable to examine their associations with Instrumental Activities of Daily Living limitation, cognitive impairment, and depression according to frailty status, adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related factors.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The number of falls was 1.40±0.08 in the robust group, 1.89±0.10 in the prefrail group, and 2.88±0.43 in the frail group. Instrumental Activities of Daily Living limitation was significantly associated with fall experience only in the prefrail group. Depression was identified as a significant fall-related factor including the robust, prefrail, and frail groups.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Higher frailty levels were associated with an increased number of falls, suggesting that frailty management should be included in fall prevention strategies. Different fall prevention interventions based on frailty status are needed. Nursing home staff require not only knowledge but also clinical judgment to address the complex needs of residents at the end of life. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a web-based palliative wound care education program using a clinical judgment model.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>An educational program was developed using the ADDIE model through needs analysis with 10 nursing home staff, program design and development, and pilot implementation and evaluation. Program effectiveness was evaluated in a quasi-experimental study with facility-level random allocation. Four nursing homes were randomly allocated to the experimental or control condition, and 52 nursing home staff were included in the final analysis (n=26 per group). The experimental group received clinical judgment model-based web education, whereas the control group received general web-based palliative wound care education without the clinical judgment model. Clinical judgment was assessed before and after the intervention using nonparametric tests.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Both groups showed significant improvements in clinical judgment. However, the experimental group demonstrated greater improvements than the control group in noticing (Z=-3.91, p<.001), interpreting (Z=-3.39, p=.001), responding (Z=-3.64, p<.001), reflecting (Z=-2.30, p=.021), and the total clinical judgment score (Z=-4.62, p<.001).</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>The findings support the effectiveness of clinical judgment model-based education in improving clinical judgment in palliative wound care. {"title":"Faith, burden, and hope in an Indonesian nursing home: An interpretive qualitative study.","authors":"Tita Hariyanti, Widodo Mardi Santoso, Daniar Dhesilva","doi":"10.17079/jkgn.2025.00395","DOIUrl":"10.17079/jkgn.2025.00395","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Purpose: </strong>This study aimed to explore the perspectives of older adults, caregivers, and managerial informants regarding institutional elder care in Indonesia.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This study used an interpretive qualitative design to explore participants' lived experiences in a faith-oriented nursing home in Gresik, Indonesia. Fifteen participants, including six older adult residents, six caregivers, and three managerial informants, participated in in-depth semi-structured interviews and non-participant observations. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis guided by interpretive principles, and reporting followed the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ). Ethical approval was obtained from an authorized review board prior to data collection.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Five themes identified were (1) family deception and prejudice leading to loss of belonging; (2) praying and working as strategies for emotional endurance; (3) waiting for family with persistent hope amid sorrow; (4) caregivers' moral and economic tensions in care practices; and (5) systemic scarcity and managerial constraints in institutional elder care.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Aging in Indonesian institutional settings reflects complex interactions among cultural expectations, spiritual coping, economic limitations, and structural care challenges. {"title":"Regional differences in health status and its associations with health behaviors and healthcare utilization among older adults in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study using the 2019~2020 Korean Community Health Survey.","authors":"Jieun Lee","doi":"10.17079/jkgn.2025.00325","DOIUrl":"10.17079/jkgn.2025.00325","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Purpose: </strong>The financial independence rate (FIR) is an important regional factor that may be associated with older adults' health status in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a comprehensive examination of older adults' health status, healthcare utilization, and health behaviors by residential area is lacking. This study aimed to analyze regional differences in health status (including physical and mental health) among older adults across two survey years (2019 and 2020), and to examine its associations with health behaviors and healthcare utilization.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>In this descriptive correlational study, data were collected from 74,547 older adults in 2019 and 72,812 in 2020 across metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas categorized by FIR, reflecting local governments' fiscal capacity.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>In both survey years, older adults living in non-metropolitan areas with below-average FIR had higher odds of unhealthy subjective health status (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=1.44~1.52, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.38~1.60) and unhealthy subjective oral health status (AOR=1.26~1.37, 95% CI=1.21~1.44) compared with those in the metropolitan region, along with lower physical activity and greater unmet healthcare needs. The association between region and depressive symptoms was significant in 2019 (AOR=1.09, 95% CI=1.03~1.15) but not in 2020 (AOR=0.95, 95% CI=0.90~1.01).</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Regional disparities in health behaviors and healthcare utilization were observed among older adults, particularly in non-metropolitan areas with below-average FIR. {"title":"Risk factors for falls and fall-related injuries among community-dwelling older adults in Korea: A longitudinal study.","authors":"Beomman Ha, Seonho Kim","doi":"10.17079/jkgn.2026.00080","DOIUrl":"10.17079/jkgn.2026.00080","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Purpose: </strong>This study aimed to identify risk factors for falls and fall-related injuries among community-dwelling older adults in Korea.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This longitudinal study analyzed 3,186 adults aged 65 or older using nationally representative data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging across three waves (2018, 2020, and 2022). We conducted multiple logistic regression analyses to identify risk factors for falls and fall-related injuries.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Over the 4-year follow-up, 148 participants (4.6%) experienced a fall, and 118 of these (79.7% of fallers) sustained a fall-related injury. The risk of falls increased with advanced age (odds ratio [OR]=2.01, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.37~2.96), female sex (OR=1.64, 95% CI=1.07~2.52), lower self-rated health (OR=1.94, 95% CI=1.01~3.77), and being underweight (OR=2.71, 95% CI=1.36~5.42) or obese (OR=1.69, 95% CI=1.11~2.55). For fall-related injuries, significant risk factors included advanced age (OR=1.74, 95% CI=1.14~2.65), female sex (OR=1.71, 95% CI=1.06~2.75), lower self-rated health (OR=2.61, 95% CI=1.22~5.59), and being underweight (OR=3.01, 95% CI=1.46~6.20).</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>These findings indicate that falls and fall-related injuries among older adults are complex health issues that extend beyond simple physical problems. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with geriatric nursing performance of nurses in OUs.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>The subjects included 131 nurses in OUs from four hospitals in Korea. A structured self-reported questionnaire was administered to assess the subjects' general characteristics, geriatric nursing stress, resilience, positive nursing organizational culture, and geriatric nursing performance. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>A total of 131 subjects with a mean (±standard deviation) age of 30.61 (±6.70) years were included in the final analyses. In the final multiple regression analysis, the factors significantly associated with geriatric nursing performance were age ≥40 years (β=.23, p=.002), experience living with older adults (β=.20, p=.004), resilience (β=.33, p<.001), and a positive nursing organizational culture (β=.36, p<.001). Although its association with cognitive impairment is increasingly recognized, evidence among South Korean older adults remains limited. This study examined the association between subjective hearing difficulty and cognitive impairment and factors associated with cognitive impairment according to subjective hearing difficulty status.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This secondary analysis used data from the 2023 National Survey of Older Koreans, including 7,419 participants. The main variables were subjective hearing difficulty and cognitive impairment; complex-sample multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Of the 7,419 participants, 20.1% reported subjective hearing difficulty. Among these, only 13.1% had been diagnosed with ARHL and 26.3% used hearing aids. Subjective hearing difficulty was associated with higher odds of cognitive impairment (odds ratio [OR]=1.50, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.26~1.80, p<.001), whereas hearing aid use was associated with lower odds (OR=0.65, 95% CI=0.49~0.86, p=.003). Factors associated with cognitive impairment differed by subjective hearing difficulty status. Sociodemographic and health-related factors were associated with cognitive impairment in both groups, whereas lifestyle factors were associated only among those without subjective hearing difficulty, and depression and hearing aid use only among those with subjective hearing difficulty.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Subjective hearing difficulty may serve as an important screening indicator for cognitive impairment, supporting the need for management strategies tailored to subjective hearing difficulty status. This study investigated factors associated with gerontological nursing practice among nurses in CNCSUs.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. The participants included 153 nurses at two general hospitals in Korea. A structured self-reported questionnaire was administered to assess general characteristics, perceived patient safety culture, moral sensitivity, organizational communication satisfaction, and gerontological nursing practice. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The 153 participants had a mean age of 29.32 years. In the multiple regression analysis, the factors associated with gerontological nursing practice of subjects included perceived patient safety culture (β=.23, p=.004), experience volunteering with older adults (β=.20, p=.008), moral sensitivity (β=.20, p=.009), and organizational communication satisfaction (β=.16, p=.046).
