{"title":"Stress Management Design Guideline with Smart Devices during COVID-19","authors":"Jeannie Kang, Daehee Park","doi":"10.15187/adr.2022.11.35.4.115","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15187/adr.2022.11.35.4.115","url":null,"abstract":"Background Stress among the general population has been steadily increasing, and the COVID-19 outbreak across the globe amplified stress by changing how we live our daily lives. As the social cost of stress increases and individual lives become devastated, managing stress becomes a critical issue. Government organizations suggest general guidelines to cope with stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, smart devices such as smartwatches and smartphones detect and monitor physiological data as an integral part of our daily life, enabling us to recognize our stress level anytime, anywhere. However, there is a lack of studies regarding stress-relieving methods with smart devices. Methods We proposed a stress management flow correlating the human cognitive process with smart device interventions. Then, we developed a step-by-step guideline on a smartphone paired with a smartwatch to relieve physical stress with lack of movement, psychological stress with fear from uncertainty, psychosocial stress with loneliness and social isolation, and psycho-spiritual stress with limitations for faith community routine during COVID-19. We recruited 24 university students as participants (8 males, 16 females), and we measured perceived stress scale (PSS) score based on the case study to verify the new design guidelines. The participants ranged in age from 20 to 25 years (mean age = 22.08). We used 14 stress measurement questions to calculate the PSS (PSS maximum = 56). In addition, we used a one-way ANOVA to analyze the PSS results. Results In general, the results of one-way ANOVA for total PSS indicated a noticeable difference between before and after the prototype (F = 33.47;p < 0.01). The mean scores were 33.25 before the prototype and 28.13 after the prototype in the statistical analysis. Findings from this study advocated our new design guidelines with smart devices that help relieve stress but there are limitations such as constrained recruiting sample and the duration of the prototype testing, fundamental difference between short-term and long-term stresses, and limited scope of stress categories and smart devices. Conclusions This study's contribution is to expand smart device's usage to stress relief during COVID-19, not only limited to stress measurement. From this study, we hope to open a discussion on the role of smart devices to manage stress and how to design guidelines for user's quality of life. © This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/), which permits unrestricted educational and non-commercial use, provided the original work is properly cited.","PeriodicalId":52137,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Design Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45931774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Neuroscience techniques allow quantitative measurement of underlying human neurophysiological responses to design. However, despite the importance of electroencephalography (EEG) in performing such quantification, design experiments have not widely applied EEG, limiting the insights that design researchers can produce. Thus, this paper describes the use of EEG in experimentation in various design fields and suggests its integration into design research. Methods This study systematically reviewed experimental design research that utilized EEG in various design domains, such as product design or architecture. Twenty-nine papers were selected using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) method. The selected papers were published in peer-reviewed journals between 2012 and 2022, written in English, and were analyzed for their design, variables, EEG tools and indicators, stimuli, experimental settings, analysis methods, and findings. Analysis was applied through a framework, population, intervention, control, outcome, and setting (PICOS) methodology. Results This paper analyzed EEG-based experiments according to PICOS to provide information about how EEG is used in experimental design research, shedding light on the application of EEG methodology in various design fields, including product design, interior (or architecture) design, and service design. The results show that neuroscience techniques can be used to collect brain data for design research. EEG has been used in various experimental design research fields to explore how an individual user reacts to specific design elements and experience. Conclusions Neurophysiological data retrieved from experiments can be used to develop evidence-based design strategies to improve the design process and design decision-making. The findings in this study contribute to our understanding of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses to design.","PeriodicalId":52137,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Design Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45336619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accordingly, this study examines artificial intelligence education according to the activation of edutech education according to the COVID-19 era. The purpose of this study is to investigate how high school design classes using artificial intelligence affect social responsibility. Methods After examining the trends, policies, and cases of artificial intelligence education following the revitalization of edutech education due to COVID-19, based on the analysis of related prior research, the 6th session of the high school art subject design lesson plan was developed. Afterwards, three design education experts and three AI technology experts were consulted twice, and the contents were revised and supplemented. From October to November 2020, the 6th class was applied to a total of 96 students in the first and second grades of H High School in Seoul. The data collected in this study were subjected to computational statistics using SPSS, and the significance level was in the range of p<.05, p<.01, and p<.001. Results As a result of the pre and post-analysis results, a matched-sample t-test was conducted to explore the educational effect of all 96 respondents. As a statistically significant educational result in all five domains of sexual attitude, responsibility obligation, responsibility ability, responsibility efficacy, and responsibility performance, the overall factor was 0.66 from the pretest (M=3.69) to the posttest (M=4.35). An educational effect was verified. Conclusions Through this study, high school design classes using artificial intelligence have a positive effect on students' social responsibility. Although there are limitations in generalizing the study by conducting the study with students in four classes, it is expected that continuous and meaningful research on similar subjects will be achieved. © This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/), which permits unrestricted educational and non-commercial use, provided the original work is properly cited.","PeriodicalId":52137,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Design Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49130073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
