The death of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, an intensive care nurse, exemplifies broader patterns of violence affecting nurses both within and beyond clinical settings and represents inherent risks of militarization within democratic societies. This commentary reviews epidemiologic evidence on violence against nurses, situated within systems of oppression, and assesses legislative efforts to protect the nursing workforce. Effective protection requires structural interventions such as enforceable occupational safety standards, organizational support, staffing reform, behavioral health resources, and partnerships for community violence prevention. Nurses' lives and the lives of the people and societies we care for depend on structural reform and health systems transformation.</p>","PeriodicalId":520809,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care : JANAC","volume":" ","pages":"351-355"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2026-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147731221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nurses have always been close, supporting and helping build and spread initiatives such as peer education, stigma reduction, and rights-based health care. Our editorial is structured around a recorded conversation among long-time researchers, advocates, and practitioners in the field of HIV, reflecting on the ethical, social, and political dimensions that have shaped their work. Framed by personal narratives and collective memories, our dialogue traces early encounters with activism and care work in HIV, asking, \"What first drew us in? What moments made the political personal, and how did that change us?\" Together, we revisited defining political and social moments in the field-AIDS activism, community-based care, criminalization, funding shifts, and movements for global access-and reflected on how they continue to shape our practice, research, and relationships today. Our conversation surfaced the affective and ethical commitments that emerge when care and activism are entangled. We asked, \"How do we sustain solidarity across difference? How do we resist the slide into apathy or despair in a world marked by ongoing injustice and fragmentation?\" Conversation and dialogue are powerful spaces that open and invite multiple voices and perspectives. In writing this piece, we aimed to represent a space that was opened as reflective and considered current ethical and political tensions, reminding us why we began.</p>","PeriodicalId":520809,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care : JANAC","volume":"37 3","pages":"258-267"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2026-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147795862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Article 12 of the \"Interpretation of Law in Handling Criminal Cases on Organizing, Forcing, Luring, Sheltering, or Introducing Prostitution\" [Prostitution Law], jointly issued by China's Supreme Court and Supreme Procuratorate in 2017, stipulates that sex workers and clients aware that they are living with HIV who engage in commercial sexual activities are to be heavily penalized for spreading sexually transmitted disease, regardless of their actual viral load or use of safety measures. Our study employs a case study methodology, aiming to explore the adverse impacts of the criminalizing provisions of China's Prostitution Law on HIV prevention efforts through the analysis of specific cases. It examines complex challenges faced by people living with HIV (PLWH) in Tunisia, focusing on those three areas of concern. We identify persistent stigma and discrimination as critical obstacles, compounded by restrictive legal frameworks and health care access challenges, including workforce shortages and insufficient training. We highlight promising policy and advocacy efforts for improving care and social inclusion for PLWH. To improve health outcomes, we advocate for multifaceted reforms, including public education campaigns, legal protections, and enhanced health care services that address PLWH's unique needs. We emphasize the importance of training health care workers and creating an empathic health care environment. We provide recommendations for a comprehensive approach combining legal reform, stigma reduction, and health care improvements to uphold the rights and dignity of PLWH in Tunisia.</p>","PeriodicalId":520809,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care : JANAC","volume":" ","pages":"366-374"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2026-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"146222759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Guidance for implementing RS-ART among people who inject drugs (PWID), a population often denied equitable treatment due to stigma and rights violations, remains limited. Using human-centered design, barriers and facilitators to combined RS-ART and opioid agonist therapy initiation in Ukraine were explored, where HIV is concentrated among PWID with opioid use disorder. Using nominal group technique, a human-centered design method involving client input, five focus groups (6-12 participants each and 42 participants total) with PWID with HIV in four Ukrainian cities most affected by HIV were conducted. Responses were rank-ordered and grouped using NVivo along the socioecological model. The most common barriers were organizational, including nonintegration of ART and opioid agonist therapy services (45%), followed by individual (22%), such as fear of withdrawal symptoms, policy/regulatory (20%), including the national addiction registry, and relationship (13%) barriers, including pervasive stigma. Solutions focused on equity, promoting behavioral design interventions like choice architecture, nudging, and message framing.</p>","PeriodicalId":520809,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care : JANAC","volume":"37 3","pages":"321-336"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2026-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147795822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Widespread access to testing and vaccines is crucial to safeguard this susceptible group. This multisite, cross-sectional study examined determinants of COVID-19 prevention among 1,397 people living with HIV across eight countries. Participants were from Botswana, China (Hong Kong), Colombia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand, and the United States. Key outcomes included adherence to restrictions, vaccination, and testing. Results showed that South Africa had the lowest adherence to COVID-19 restrictions, Nigeria had the lowest vaccination rates, and testing access was limited in Colombia, Kenya, and Nigeria. Influential factors included country, housing stability, sexual activity, age, race, information sources, and local prevention policies. Drawing from feminist principles-including human dignity, intersectionality, collective leadership, and care-the article explores how these ideals can reorient the structures and strategies of nursing organizations. Using the Philippine Society of Sexual and Reproductive Health Nurses Inc. as a case exemplar, we show how a feminist approach to governance, programming, and coalition-building strengthens a society's ability to confront stigma, advance sexual and reproductive rights, and support people living with and affected by HIV.
