In order to scientifically verify these impressions, I performed a field test with three groups of runners of different performance levels preparing for a marathon. The first group was given acupuncture, the second a placebo, with the third being the control group. After their maximum pulse rates were recorded, the runners were asked to run 5000m four times in 4 weeks at 75 % of their maximum pulse rate. Their pulse rates were measured for each runner at the finish of the run, and subsequently, one, two and five minutes after the run. Based on these data, the complexity factor (running time multiplied by the respective pulse rate) was calculated for all four recorded pulse rates for each run and each runner. All groups showed statistically significant enhancements in their running times and their complexity factors, but in the case of the runners treated with acupuncture, the improvements were highly significant. Therefore, the field test proves that acupuncture has a significant impact on the performance of the athletes in endurance sports.</p>","PeriodicalId":520779,"journal":{"name":"Sportverletzung Sportschaden : Organ der Gesellschaft fur Orthopadisch-Traumatologische Sportmedizin","volume":" ","pages":"140-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2010-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1055/s-0029-1245406","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40071764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different techniques have been described. From 10/97 till 4/02 we have treated 25 patients with avulsion of the distal biceps tendon by anatomic reinsertion at the radial tuberosity with suture anchors by using a limited anterior approach. 24 patients underwent a clinical follow-up of at least 3 months, the average follow-up was 15.8 months. All patients were men with a mean age of 46 years (32-64 years). Surgery was performed within 9 days (1-28 days) after trauma. No wound healing complication was observed. 2-3 suture anchors have been used in each patient. After 3 months, most patients reached a free range of motion and full strength with unlimited recreational and professional activity. In three cases (12.5 %) a heterotopic ossification occurred, two of them (8.3 %) underwent surgical revision. In one case (4.2 %) we observed a rerupture after 6 weeks. 6 patients (12.5 %) described an intermittent disturbance of sensitivity in their radial forearm, in two cases (8.3 %) the lack of sensitivity persisted. Each patient would choose the same procedure in case of injury.</p>","PeriodicalId":520779,"journal":{"name":"Sportverletzung Sportschaden : Organ der Gesellschaft fur Orthopadisch-Traumatologische Sportmedizin","volume":" ","pages":"28-33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2004-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1055/s-2004-813045","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40842630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Few studies have focussed on the special demands of professional athletes who sustain these injuries. We present our experience with three cases of lower leg fractures in competitive professional downhill skiers and discuss management and treatment concepts. We performed limited reamed compression nailing in all the patients presented because it offers the advantages of high mechanical stability and optimized fragment apposition. Plate osteosynthesis of the fibula is not required in most typical fractures. All patients resumed ski training. Two of them returned to World Cup. Only one achieved her pre-injury World Cup level of performance and success. In conclusion, a successful return for professional skiers with lower leg fractures is feasible using an optimized treatment strategy.</p>","PeriodicalId":520779,"journal":{"name":"Sportverletzung Sportschaden : Organ der Gesellschaft fur Orthopadisch-Traumatologische Sportmedizin","volume":" ","pages":"22-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2004-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1055/s-2004-812899","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40842743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the controlled study was to examine the proprioceptive and sensorimotor control of the ankle in a group of dancers in professional training and to compare it with persons unused to physical training. The purpose was to investigate whether dance training influences the torque ratio of plantar flexion to dorsiflexion (PF/DF) and the proprioceptive performance compared to controls. 42 dancers (31 f, 11 m) in professional training and 40 sex- and age-matched controls performed a isokinetic peak torque test, a passive angle-reproduction test (Biodex System 3), and a single-limb-standing test. The female dancers showed a significantly higher peak torque ratio PF/DF at 30 degrees/s. The difference between male dancers and the controls did not reach a significant level. The dancers did not demonstrate lower absolute errors in passive angle-reproduction (5 degrees and 25 degrees PF) than controls. In the single-limb-standing test, the dancers achieved significantly better results than controls. Dancers could profit from special training of the dorsiflexors. In view of the balance deficits, coordinative exercises should be integrated into school and recreational sports more frequently.</p>","PeriodicalId":520779,"journal":{"name":"Sportverletzung Sportschaden : Organ der Gesellschaft fur Orthopadisch-Traumatologische Sportmedizin","volume":" ","pages":"15-21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2004-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1055/s-2004-813047","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40842742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
