Using online questionnaires, we collected data on bioethics activities of alumni before and following training. Participants also indicated how else they thought the program could produce greater benefits. Of 40 English-speaking alumni, 20 (50%) completed questionnaires. There was greater participation in outreach education activities after the program (55%) compared with before (25%). No significant change was observed in other activities; however, at least half of the graduates served on research ethics committees, engaged in advocacy, or carried out bioethics-related duties in their jobs. Time constraints and insufficient opportunities were cited as reasons for not participating in more activities. Alumni also felt that they would have benefited from practical interventions such as internships. Graduates could contribute more to strengthening bioethics systems in the Caribbean with greater support from key stakeholders.
","PeriodicalId":520668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of empirical research on human research ethics : JERHRE","volume":" ","pages":"15562646251397188"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2025-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12914572/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145597756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examined the perspectives of researchers, research ethics committee (REC) members, and secretariats in Kenya through six in-depth interviews and two focus group discussions (N = 18). Thematic analysis revealed that DPER was considered to enhance efficiency, communication, and cost-effectiveness. However, concerns were raised about data security, platform rigidity, and limited training. Addressing these challenges and involving stakeholders in system design is essential for achieving digital autonomy. The findings emphasise the need for strategies to enhance DPER adoption and functionality, ensuring effective and secure research ethics oversight in the evolving digital landscape.
","PeriodicalId":520668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of empirical research on human research ethics : JERHRE","volume":" ","pages":"15562646251380741"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2025-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145240779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, this could hinder research access to Deaf communities. Deaf-centric best practices draw from sociocultural perspectives instead. Motivated by this lack of Deaf-centric provisions for research with Deaf communities in the existing legal ethical frameworks in South Africa, this article examines best practices for gaining access to Deaf communities based on a broader study on South African Sign Language place names. The article synthesises ethical guidelines from literature and infuses them with the researchers' own experiences during fieldwork of the broader study to come up with best practices. These include community engagement and collaborative partnerships, seeking ethics clearance; respecting conventions of the Deaf culture, and strategically managing discontent. We conclude that these best practices could form a foundation for a future research ethics framework that considers Deaf-centric practices.
","PeriodicalId":520668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of empirical research on human research ethics : JERHRE","volume":" ","pages":"222-232"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2025-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12480613/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144577586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We surveyed university professors, directors, and deans and analyzed secondary data from graduate student research manuscripts. The results showed gaps in the university professors' understanding and implementation of research ethics and integrity in their work. Findings indicated that while university leaders acknowledged serious research ethics and integrity challenges, they were largely unaware of the lack of policies and guidance to support ethical research practices. Furthermore, manuscript reviews revealed that graduate students did not consistently follow responsible research practices. These results highlight significant gaps in the research infrastructure, suggesting a need for comprehensive policies and education to improve research ethics and integrity in academic settings in Bolivia. This research serves as a baseline for change in-country and can inform the development of capacity training programs and quality research practices in similar low and middle-income country universities.
","PeriodicalId":520668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of empirical research on human research ethics : JERHRE","volume":" ","pages":"200-209"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2025-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145031671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our study explored perspectives on ethical conduct in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research from forty-two students from two universities, one in Sweden and one in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ), where ethics review requirements for tertiary SoTL research significantly differ. A combination of global and local values informed participants' decisions. Commonly, students expected participation to be voluntary and informed, with grades protected. Students considered participation in SoTL research based on the trustworthiness of the teacher. We found two local differences. Firstly, a utilitarian justification was present within participatory decisions of the Swedish cohort, while a justice lens predominated among NZ students. Secondly, hands-on learning experiences may help nurture the capacity for moral judgment about research and research ethics. This appeared more likely in Sweden, where fewer ethics review restrictions exist for SoTL research.
","PeriodicalId":520668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of empirical research on human research ethics : JERHRE","volume":" ","pages":"210-221"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2025-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12480611/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144777679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We used a narrative review approach to identify recurring issues that Research Ethics Committees (RECs) commonly raise as concerns and the strategies that might be effective to manage the intricacies of institutional processes. Six dominant themes were: risk aversion overshadowing benefits of suicide research; participant agency and informed consent; ethically reflexive practice is not supported through current processes; dominance of quantitative research tradition; lack of standardisation in RECs decision-making; and lack of evidence on risk in suicide research. Four strategies to navigate institutional ethics approval were: relationship-building and dialogue between researchers and RECs; researcher safeguarding strategies; supporting ethically reflexive practice of the researcher; and RECs processes are evidence-based and provide ethical justification. We suggest how to improve institutional ethics processes specifically for suicide research and highlight the need for more insight into REC members' perspectives.
","PeriodicalId":520668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of empirical research on human research ethics : JERHRE","volume":" ","pages":"233-240"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2025-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12480609/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144986374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, significant ethical challenges arise, particularly around donor autonomy in informed consent for collecting and using biological materials and personal data. This study examines how Chinese biobanks inform donors about their participation and the ethical content of consent documents. Using qualitative content analysis, 12 consent documents from various biobanks were reviewed against six ethical dimensions. Findings revealed significant variability, with only two biobanks providing comprehensive information across all dimensions. While all biobanks employed an opt-in consent model, the scope of future research and data-sharing was often vaguely defined, raising concerns about donor autonomy. Practical recommendations include adopting flexible legal approaches to enhance donor rights, build public trust, and support biobank research. These findings offer actionable insights for policymakers and biobank administrators, emphasizing the need for more standardized and transparent consent practices to advance public health and medical research ethically and sustainably.
","PeriodicalId":520668,"journal":{"name":"Journal of empirical research on human research ethics : JERHRE","volume":" ","pages":"241-249"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2025-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145014240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
