Sartori","doi":"10.1075/hl.00101.sar","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1075/hl.00101.sar","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000Si, pour nos traditions grammaticales européennes, la reconnaissance des appositions comme objet grammatical et non plus seulement comme éléments ressortissants à la rhétorique ne se fait que tardivement et non sans allers-retours, en gros vers le xvi\u0000 e siècle, celles-ci sont intégrées à la grammaire de l’arabe dès le début de son histoire au ii\u0000 e/viii\u0000 e siècle. La prime tradition grammaticale arabe reconnaît même, de manière implicite mais suffisamment claire, l’opposition à faire entre apposition liée et apposition détachée, ce que nos traditions grammaticales attendrons encore longtemps. Un autre trait de la singularité de la tradition grammaticale arabe sur cette question de la reconnaissance grammaticale des appositions, fait l’objet de cet article : elle est semble-t-il la première mais encore la seule à intégrer à son matériau grammatical l’erreur commise par le locuteur, qu’il s’agisse d’une faute d’inattention ou d’un oubli momentané, c’est-à-dire ce qui est nommé depuis le xx\u0000 e siècle et ses préoccupations propres lapsus (linguae, memoriae). Et si elle en traite grammaticalement, c’est parce qu’elle reconnaît les corrections de ces erreurs comme des types d’apposition, des permutations, ce que ne fait encore que très imparfaitement la linguistique générale contemporaine et pas du tout les grammaires des langues européennes. A cette fin, il décrit la confluence\u0000 des courants discursifs en bascologie à la fin du XIXe siècle dans un contexte de création des disciplines de la\u0000 linguistique et de la philologie romane en Europe et de la “renaissance” de la langue et de l’identité basques. L’article soutient\u0000 que ce processus s’est distingué par l’intégration de deux traditions —l’une “locale”, unie à la patrie basque, et l’autre\u0000 “étrangère”, liée à la bascologie européenne— dans la stratégie de publication de la Revue Internationale des Études\u0000 Basques (fondée en 1907). Apart from printed publications, his contributions include various forms of outreach directed towards the Jewish\u0000 community in Lviv (Ukrainian Львів [L'viv], Polish Lwów, German Lemberg). Among others,\u0000 Smith was among the first scholars to collaborate extensively with Indigenous consultants and the first woman in the history of\u0000 Western linguistics who published works on grammatical gender. Lorenzo","doi":"10.1075/hl.00089.lor","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1075/hl.00089.lor","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000Over the years, Noam Chomsky has constructed a historiographic narrative according to which Generative Grammar is the outcome of a mix comprising the early awareness of creativity by Galileo, the Cartesians, and Humboldt, the formalization of recursive functions by computational theorists, and an incipient internalist ‘language’ concept notably foreshadowed by Otto Jespersen. This paper tries to show that the latter ingredient is to be removed from the historical recipe for Chomskyan linguistics. More specifically, the paper claims that the almost ritual repetition of the name of the Danish linguist belongs to a component of the generativist rhetoric that is ‘non-rational’. Sometimes called Vulgar or Popular Latin, this variety is often conceptualized as a discrete linguistic variety, which is held responsible for the changes in the provincial realization of Latin. Since a great deal of evidence for this variety is collected from written texts, studies on the emergence of the Romance languages have tended to ignore the actual process of language acquisition in the provinces of the Roman empire. In the present paper I draw attention to the work of two early scholars, the Italian Celso Cittadini (1533–1627) and the Frenchman Pierre-Nicolas Bonamy (1694–1770), who did concern themselves with the acquisition of Latin, referring to the role of the Roman army in spreading the Latin language throughout the empire.
