It needs a natural setting of target language in order to convey and understand the message correctly. The research was designed as a qualitative study to describe the process of second language acquisition experienced by Afghan refugees living in Makassar City for 5 to 10 years. In addition to describing the language acquisition process for Bahasa Indonesia as a second language, the study also explored the factors influencing this process. The research took 10 Afghan refugees who were proficient in Bahasa Indonesia as participants. To gather data related to their language acquisition and the factors influencing it, the informants were interviewed. Observation was used to supplement and verify the data on Bahasa Indonesia acquisition from the interviews. Thus, the data were analysed based on Krashen's theory (1995) of acquisition learning and the factors that influenced the informants' language acquisition. The research revealed that the refugees in Makassar used various methods (self-learning, courses) to acquire Bahasa Indonesia. They progressed through the five stages of language acquisition. Internal (motivation, personality, aptitude) and external factors (learning situations, local interactions) influenced their learning. Despite challenges, they persevered by practicing with Indonesian neighbours.Keyword: language acquisition, Afghan refugees, efforts, interaction, local people","PeriodicalId":518731,"journal":{"name":"CALL","volume":" 44","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141833830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Expressive speech acts, which convey the speaker's emotions and attitudes, play a crucial role in persuasive and motivational communication. The aim was to understand how Prince EA effectively engages and inspires his audience through these acts. A qualitative analysis was conducted on a selection of Prince EA's spoken word performances. Using speech act theory as a framework, instances of expressive speech acts were identified and categorized. Data was collected through transcription and thematic analysis of the videos. The analysis revealed a significant presence of expressive speech acts in these performances that cover apologizing, condoling, lamenting, showing attitude, agreeing, using exclamation, wishing, and thanking. These acts were predominantly expressing hope, encouragement, empathy, and personal conviction. The frequent use of these expressions contributed to the emotional resonance and motivational impact of the performances. The findings suggest that the effective use of expressive speech acts enhances the motivational appeal of Prince EA's spoken word performances. By conveying genuine emotions and attitudes, a connection with the audience is created, fostering a sense of empathy and inspiration. Hence, this study highlights the importance of expressive speech acts in motivational speaking and offers insights for speakers aiming to engage and motivate their audiences effectively.Keyword: pragmatic, ethics, speech acts, motivation","PeriodicalId":518731,"journal":{"name":"CALL","volume":"84 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141834538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research focuses on the film adaptation of literary works, examining the ecranization of novels into films and the use of adaptation theory to convert novel texts into visual films while preserving the essence of the novel as a hypogram. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing close reading and close viewing techniques. It classifies the transformations using Pamusuk Eneste's ecranization (1991) approach and Seymour Chatman's interpretation theory (2018) of the change process in novels and films. The findings reveal that films often include additional stories to convey the setting more explicitly. Although various settings are altered, these changes are justified as it is often impractical to visually depict the atmosphere detailed in the novel. The introduction of new characters in the film aligns with the expanded plot, necessitating the inclusion of characters absent in the novel. Additionally, the visualization of characters in the film undergoes modifications, yet remains consistent with the novel's descriptions. Backgrounds are condensed to fit the film's plot, resulting in the omission of some novel locations in the film adaptation.Keyword: transformation, ecranization, novel, film, twilight","PeriodicalId":518731,"journal":{"name":"CALL","volume":"338 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141836935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper indicates the major features of the change from a utopian farm to a dystopian one, such as the perpetually increasing amount of labour that each animal has to undertake, the obvious decrease of ration which the pigs use for trading otherwise, the disturbing intervention into animals' personal freedom and thought by the totalitarian pigs and many more accounts that further establish such change. The aim of this was to shed light on those distinct paths that may lead any society towards dystopia, lest any community may have already begun going down such paths, to alert them and reverberate the sounding alarm. At the beginning, this research dealt with an introduction to the background of the time and literary movement that was present during the process of writing Animal Farm, namely the rise of the Stalinisit regime, and the surge of Utopian/Dystopian novels. The second chapter studies previous research written on the same topic as this one, the early events in Animal Farm and their effect on shaping the farm, and the significance of freedom within the farm. The third chapter consists of demonstrating the fundamental changes that contributed to the decline of the farm into its eventual dystopian nature, and a conclusion on the matter. The paper uses a textual and historical approaches in analyzing the texts of the novella.
