\u0000This article exposes several applications of geographic information systems (GIS) in order to make information from archives and libraries more accessible. It uses the example of the historical GIS of Madrid (1869-1879), designed from the Carlos Ibáñez de Ibero plot plan and the Geographical and Statistical Institute’s topographical records, that have been georeferenced and vectorised. Firstly, we examine the potential of the GIS as a tool for analysis using data from the parcel map and also from other historical sources, such as sanitary statistics or the Bailly-Baillière trade directory. Secondly, we discover how a historical GIS can be used to manage and access documentary heritage, overcoming some of the traditional limitations of free-text search engines. Thirdly, we examine the potential for dissemination of materials produced thanks to the GIS. To this end, two examples of web mapping platforms are presented in which the licences for works from the Archivo de Villa de Madrid and the publications of La Ilustración Española y Americana have been integrated. In conclusion, we stress the need to federate libraries and archives with interdisciplinary university teams in order to tackle such extensive projects. \u0000Since ancient times, forests have provided humankind with an important source of resources: food, fuel, construction material... An importance that has led throughout the ages to proper management and exploitation through the so-called silviculture and, in more recent times, through the dasonomic disciplines. The Forestry Districts are, in fact, the primary documentary source that brings together the way in which Spanish forests have been managed throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, being a fundamental piece to understand the current state of Spanish forests and their evolution throughout the Modern Age. The aim of this article is to understand the history of these institutions, as yet untreated from an Archival perspective, by looking at their Institutional History and identifying their main documental series; two necessary tasks for the ultimate aim of these pages: the proposal of a Classification Scheme that can help to prepare the way for future archival work to be carried out on these fonds.
