The few remaining natural areas of the estuary are dominated by hard flood defences, industrial quaysides and tidal barriers. These features all prevent natural expansion of the estuary. Tees Tidelands is an estuary wide programme to open up the tributaries to tidal influence, to enable fish passage, re-establish parts of the natural estuary and permit inland migration of the estuary. This will maintain and improve resilience to flood risk through nature-based solutions. Restore the natural habitat. Reconnect people back to the estuary, whilst being resilient to the impact of climate change. Realign the estuary, allowing for coastal expansion. Our article will set the tone for engineers to be focused on working with the environment, to create a better place.","PeriodicalId":516582,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Civil Engineering","volume":"40 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141652093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was built to protect Greater London from exceptionally high tides and storm surges, caused when a deep depression forms to the north of Scotland and progresses across the North Sea and south-easterly towards southern Scandinavia. The capital needed it. When surges coincide with a high spring tide, the high winds associated with the depression can funnel the water up the Thames Estuary and can cause the water to rise 12 feet.","PeriodicalId":516582,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Civil Engineering","volume":" 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141374541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These courses have shown the importance to be reminded of the past, of lessons learnt, and other experiences some of which will be lost without this initiative. The project is to make available a searchable folder (a ‘pensieve’) on-line. Primarily this is focused on capturing: TW memories, stories, and events for archive, partially by retiring members who would like some of their career photos and experiences recorded. The project is also to interview leading TW practitioners on their current thoughts on achieving best practice.","PeriodicalId":516582,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Civil Engineering","volume":"25 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140248063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
