By leveraging the power of symbolic commentary, the research aims to capture social situations that address vulnerability without revealing the identities of the subjects. Focusing on Bet Sheekoom: House of Restoration for Women and Children and Maranatha Mission Station, the documentary series portrays these environments and their residents without disclosing any personal identifiers. This approach safeguards the participants from potential harm and aims to ensure their anonymity, while still engaging in a meaningful societal dialogue. Drawing on principles from documentary photography, visual studies, and ethics, this research contributes to understanding responsible representation and power dynamics within the visual representation of vulnerable identities. By navigating the delicate balance between social commentary and ethical practices, the study offers insight into alternative methods of capturing and highlighting vulnerable populations. The findings shed light on the significance of ethical considerations in documentary photography, demonstrating the importance of respecting the dignity and privacy of vulnerable individuals. This study contributes to the broader discourse on visual representation, offering valuable insight for practitioners, scholars, and those interested in the ethical dimensions of photography. DISCLOSURE STATEMENTNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Notes1 Throughout this paper the terms ‘vulnerable identities’ and ‘vulnerable groups’ will make reference to the research participants involved in the photographic documentation conducted at the two safe havens namely, Bet Sheekoom House of Restoration for Women and Children and Maranatha Mission Station.Additional informationNotes on contributorsNadia Elize Van Der WaltNadia is a lecturer at Greenwich University, Vietnam, with an extensive background in documentary photography, videography, film, gender, and queer studies. We argue that while the visual representation of refugees can in general mainstream radicalisation, it gains additional traction in authoritarian context as it streams political discontent away from the governments to ‘ungrateful’ refugees. The paper is built on an analysis of do-it-yourself (DIY) videos in Turkey and Hungary in relation to two specific events involving refugees. The extant research mostly looks into online activism via DIY media. However, we approach them from an opposite perspective and show that not only social movements, but also states benefit from the audience-making potential of DIY media insomuch as these videos appear less as government propaganda and more as representative of public opinion. The film contributes to an understanding of the socio-cultural meanings of pasung, the sets of beliefs and customs that support such practices (including beliefs about mental illness and healing), and the challenges that must be overcome to eradicate this human rights abuse while highlighting the efforts to eradicate this practice at several levels. This article provides a reflection on the author's experiences and motivations for making Breaking the Chains. Equipped with only a video camera and amateurism, the author dives into a unique judo practice. By illustrating the failures and regrets from the attempts in the field, the article highlights the methodological significance of using audio-visual recording in comparison to writing. By drawing on Henri Bergson’s criticism of spatialised time, the article develops the possibility of the method of subtraction, arguing that while text-based practice is open for additions, video recording, rather, is a subtractive attempt. The metaphor of the carver is proposed, along with discussion of Lévi-Strauss’ bricoleur and engineer, to illuminate how the practice of subtraction aims to achieve duration, missing from dominant studies today.","PeriodicalId":51634,"journal":{"name":"Visual Studies","volume":"114 42","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135138240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
