I have been an information professional for over seven years, and during that time there have always been aspects of librarianship that people thought would ‘die out.’ The need for librarians in an ‘information age’, for example. How often have we heard that ‘Google can find the results’, and so on? However, aren’t we now more important than ever before? Perhaps more so than any other period? I think that mid-career professionals are looking at a future where we need to learn to marry the soft skills of the profession with the harder, more technical skills required to specialise and adapt to an evolving need within society.\u0000I am currently a User Research Consultant at Methods, Information Technology and Services. Projects are focussed mainly in the public sector and to date I've worked with the Education, Skills and Funding Agency and the Department of Education. Attending the 2019 CILIP Conference through the generosity of the UKeiG CILIP Conference Bursary, gave me the opportunity to connect with old friends, make new friends, and network with a community that I usually only interact with online. It’s easy to forget how diverse the profession is with the myriad roles and personalities that make up an increasingly nuanced industry.\u0000This article will articulate my interpretations of key conference themes, and their relevance to Knowledge and Information Management (K&IM).","PeriodicalId":514525,"journal":{"name":"eLucidate","volume":"36 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141211546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Breaking the Book: Contrasting Paradigms of Print Culture 打破书本:印刷文化的对比范式

{"title":"Breaking the Book: Contrasting Paradigms of Print Culture","authors":"Michael Upshall","doi":"10.29173/elucidate741","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29173/elucidate741","url":null,"abstract":"I opened Breaking the Book: Print Humanities in the Digital Age (2015) (which, paradoxically, I read in digital form on a smartphone) with a lot of anticipation. Laura Mandell is a scholar of eighteenth-century literature, and an enthusiastic pioneer and advocate of digital collections such as Early English Books Online (EEBO) and Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) for studying early English texts. Therefore, I expected this book to have insights into how digital texts differed from print, and how academic discourse can make effective use of digital resources, for example to analyse texts. What the book contains, however, is much different. Rather than being an assessment of digital texts, Breaking the Book is much more ambitious: it emphasises changes in print culture for much of the book, only considering digital publishing towards the end. Mandell asks, “how does the book machine work,” by looking at the history of the printed book. The book concludes with a manifesto for print humanities – not, in fact, a manifesto for digital humanities at all, but a claim for how digital print can transform “the book machine.” Nonetheless, a reader will see this book more as a contribution to the history of the printed word than a study of digital humanities.","PeriodicalId":514525,"journal":{"name":"eLucidate","volume":"43 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141215745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It showcased the theme of information modelling using data and metrics: the analysis, exploitation, utilisation, management and visualisation of data in a number of settings, including the construction industry and public libraries. \u0000Keith Wilson, Construction Information Consultant, provided a fascinating insight into Building Information Modelling (BIM), a well-established integrated project information model and common data environment in that sector. \u0000Aude Charillon, of Newcastle City Libraries, presented on “releasing and re-using” public library data to engage and empower library visitors. She is a champion of open, shared content and data literacy; the need to educate people about their rights to utilise and customise creative works – images, sound, films and data - that are free of copyright. \u0000Jisc's Siobhan Burke gave the delegates an overview of Analytics Lab, a joint HESA (UK Higher Education data and analysis) and Jisc business intelligence research and development project. She also gave an overview of Heidi Plus, the Higher Education Information Database for Institutions. It encompasses the delivery of data sets through a data explorer tool, dashboards, visualisations, training and support materials. \u0000Data literacy is an increasingly important part of working life and ensuring that it is integrated into the knowledge and information skills set will future proof the profession. Nick observed that library and information professionals have often stood on the periphery spectating, watching things happen not making things happen, and allowing major developments in “big data” and “data science” to pass us by. Now is the time to respond more effectively to the challenges and opportunities that data has to offer.","PeriodicalId":514525,"journal":{"name":"eLucidate","volume":"124 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141216063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
