Although Piette is critical of sociologists in La Religion de près (1999), his work resonates with scholarship on ‘lived religion’ by contemporary sociologists of religion. This article locates points of overlap and divergence between Piette and scholars of lived religion, and then turns its attention towards the emergent study of lived non-religion. It concludes that while Piette’s micro-level approach to religious life has limitations for sociologists, he still offers conceptual and methodological perspectives that contribute to research on lived religion and non-religion. To demonstrate this argument, Piette’s work is drawn into a discussion of the Nonreligion in a Complex Future’s Community Gardens research project, which explores how religious and non-religious actors enact and construct their (non-)religion in community gardens.","PeriodicalId":514407,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Religion/Sciences Religieuses","volume":"180 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140235703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The methodological approach follows two stages: 1- a theoretical and systematized search in databases (integrative review); 2- a field approach, combining a meeting of senior experts, followed by a questionnaire. The results highlighted the recurrence of a feeling of loneliness and confrontation with the unknown, which resulted in a disoriented state of being that challenges the existential meaning. The elders responded to the unknown caused by the pandemic, by regaining control of their disoriented state through awareness-raising work, which led them to discern the importance of reworking in their lives the existential and spiritual level. As a result, a deployment of spiritualities occurs and institutional religion is replaced by intentional spiritualities.","PeriodicalId":514407,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Religion/Sciences Religieuses","volume":"94 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140433692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I draw from my own experience as an editorial assistant at History of Religions, manuscript reviewer, and Latine ethnographer of religion to speculate on the reasons why researchers might refuse to cite them, preferring either to neglect their contributions or to “plagnore” them, to borrow a term coined by legal scholar, law professor, and activist Lolita Buckner Inniss. I then expand on Chicana and Boricua feminist and race scholar Nichole Margarita Garcia’s theorization of under-citation as “spirit-murdering.” I invoke philosopher and political scientist Achille Mbembe’s formulation of necropolitics to make the case that citation is a matter of life and death for Black and Latine women scholars in particular. In the absence of institutional accountability for editors and authors, I conclude with recommendations for the diversification of our scholarship and syllabi.","PeriodicalId":514407,"journal":{"name":"Studies in Religion/Sciences Religieuses","volume":"161 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140451236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
