The global crisis of inequity and exclusion has necessitated changes throughout cultural and educational institutions, challenging the conventions of curricular teaching, performance traditions, and genre parameters. Consequently, the canon of art song repertoire has exploded with a wealth of underrepresented voices and their champions. This column acknowledges art song’s capacity to break down barriers of bias and prejudice, while celebrating some people and publications that are paving the way for a vibrant and inclusive world of vocal repertoire.","PeriodicalId":511667,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Singing","volume":"113 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139453901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to personal reminiscences, Doscher’s pedagogy is also explored, collectively depicting a comprehensive portrait of her teaching style, maxims, and core beliefs about vocal technique and the art of singing. These short essays are presented for a new generation of singers and teachers who have not had the privilege of directly experiencing Doscher’s tutelage and provide deeper insight into the work and career of one of the most important voice pedagogues of the twentieth century. This article was originally published as an appendix for the 2023 paperback second edition of The Functional Unity of the Singing Voice and is reprinted here with permission of the publisher.","PeriodicalId":511667,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Singing","volume":"35 44","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139455657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The composer set four poems from Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Galway Kinnell’s book-length poem The Book of Nightmares , which was inspired by Kinnell’s experiences during the Vietnam era and is framed by images of life through the births of his two children. Heggie drew from his own life experiences as a parent himself to capture, through music, the joy and struggle of parenthood. The article discusses both the poet’s and the composer’s biographies, then moves to Heggie’s stylistic influences and compositional process, as well as his most important works and their critical reception. The last portion of this article focuses on the commission, premiere, recording, and public reception of From The Book of Nightmares specifically, including short analyses of each song, thus serving as a performer’s guide to the cycle. The article is noteworthy for its many quotations derived from multiple personal interviews between Heggie and the author, which appear with permission from the composer.","PeriodicalId":511667,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Singing","volume":"11 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139458166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article and the subsequent one, the authors address readers who seek to perform scientific studies on the voice. We discuss certain standards that need to be met for the results to be meaningful, including the types of equipment used to make measurements as well as their calibration, the control of experimental variables, issues concerning the subjects and subject populations, the experimental tasks the subjects perform, and statistical power. We present this in the form of “fatal flaws” to avoid in doing an experiment.","PeriodicalId":511667,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Singing","volume":"52 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139395379","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By making comparisons to dental hygiene habits, like regular ~ossing and wearing a mouthguard at night, the author examines two everyday mindsets that can create obstacles to practicing. He then offers tactics for helping students identify these roadblocks so they can move to more positive habits. In this way, instead of responding to clients with exasperation that they have not practiced as much as recommended, teachers can provide strategies and steps that can lead to more productive practice.","PeriodicalId":511667,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Singing","volume":" 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139392332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These articles are a rare glimpse at first-person, uninterpreted information. To the author’s knowledge, this collection of articles had not been previously re-published in its entirety until this three-part series within Provenance , of which this installment is Part Two. While Marchesi fields a range of questions, a persistent theme in this installment involves the appropriate age to begin serious study of voice, as well as Marchesi’s opinion of diaphragmatic, “lateral” and clavicular breathing.","PeriodicalId":511667,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Singing","volume":" 30","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139392671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
