To overcome this limitation, we have developed a novel composite coating on the FeCo alloy surface by synergistically modifying a phytic acid conversion coating (PACC) with tannic acid (TA) and cerium salts. This was achieved using a simple, ethanol-assisted layer-by-layer self-assembly method. Its structure and performance were systematically evaluated using multiscale characterization techniques and electrochemical testing. Our results demonstrate that this synergistic modification effectively repairs the intrinsic porosity of the PACC, yielding a denser and more uniform film. The corrosion resistance of the modified composite layer significantly surpasses that of both the bare alloy and the single-layer PACC, with the PACC-Ce-5TA sample exhibiting the best protective performance. At the initial corrosion stage, its polarization resistance increases by two orders of magnitude compared with the substrate, achieving a protection efficiency of up to 98.72%. More importantly, dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and wire beam electrode (WBE) visualization indicate that the composite layer exhibits remarkable self-healing behavior. The superior protection is attributed to a multi-faceted mechanism: a robust physical barrier formed by a sacrificial outer TA layer and a densified inner PACC layer, supplemented by the cathodic inhibition of Ce3+ ions and an active self-healing function, where TA molecules chelate with metal ions at defect sites. This study provides a green and effective strategy for durable corrosion protection of FeCo alloys and related metallic materials. • A novel eco-friendly TA-Ce synergistically modified phytic acid coating is constructed on FeCo alloy. • The synergy of Ce3+ and TA effectively repairs defects in the PACC, forming a dense barrier. • The modified coating exhibits excellent corrosion resistance with up to 98.72% protection efficiency. • Dynamic electrochemical tests reveal remarkable self-healing behavior of the coating. • The self-healing mechanism arises from Ce3+ cathodic inhibition and TA-metal chelation repair.","PeriodicalId":510857,"journal":{"name":"Surface Science and Technology","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-01-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147909295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, due to the high hardness and outstanding chemical stability of GaN, the efficiency of its chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is relatively low. Photoelectrochemical mechanical polishing (PECMP) has emerged as a highly effective technique for GaN polishing. However, the development of appropriate slurry for PECMP remains a pressing issue, as achieving an optimal balance among electrical conductivity, transmittance, and particle stability is particularly challenging. This research delves into novel slurry designed for GaN PECMP. A systematic investigation is conducted to explore the impact of electrolyte type, concentration, temperature and pH on the performance of the slurry, and conducted PECMP test to evaluate performance of silica sol mixed electrolyte in PECMP. Results indicate that among the electrolytes tested, monovalent cations, particularly in the case of 0.2 M Li2SO4 provided a favorable balance, enhancing conductivity considerably while largely maintaining high UV transmittance and particle dispersion stability over the experimental period. In contrast, divalent cations induce severe aggregation, degrading polishing performance. pH experiment reveals the stability of silica sol arises from the synergistic interplay of surface electrical properties, electrolyte characteristics, and the intrinsic chemical stability of the material PECMP test confirms that aggregated particles from unstable slurries cause surface scratches and pits. Under optimized conditions (0.2 M Li2SO4, 20 nm silica at 5 wt%), the slurry achieved a surface finish with Sₐ 0.292 nm. These results provide profound insights for the design of advanced PECMP slurries and make a significant contribution to the continuous development of GaN wafer manufacturing technology.","PeriodicalId":510857,"journal":{"name":"Surface Science and Technology","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-10-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s44251-025-00095-4.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147904843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Much work has indicated that the corrosion resistance of TCP conversion coating is highly dependent of aluminum alloy type, but the associated mechanism is still not clear. In this paper, based on a Cr-Zr-Ti conversion solution, the structure and corrosion resistance of the TCP coating on four typical aluminum alloys, namely 2024-T351, 7050-T7451, 6061-T6 and 5056-H18, have been investigated. It was found that the TCP coatings formed on 5056 and 6061 alloys showed higher corrosion resistance than those formed on 2024 and 7050 alloys, and the corrosion resistance was negatively related to the amount of Cu in the coating. Mg and Zn were present as oxides and hydroxides in the coating, beneficial to the compactness of the TCP coating. Compared with Cu, Mg and Zn, Si had less effect on the structure and corrosion resistance of the coating. It is suggested that the incorporation of the alloying elements from the alloy substrate into the TCP coating have contributed greatly to different structure and corrosion resistance of the TCP coatings formed on different aluminum alloys.","PeriodicalId":510857,"journal":{"name":"Surface Science and Technology","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s44251-025-00093-6.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147333052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the silane coupling agent 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH560) was added to commercial gear oils and white nanoparticles (WNPs) were generated in situ during friction. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the generated nanoparticles were polysiloxane nanoparticles. The polysiloxane nanoparticles generated in the contact area of the friction pair acted as rolling bearings and improved the lubrication condition in the contact area, and also worked synergistically with P-containing antiwear additives in the oil to significantly reduce friction and wear, with the coefficient of friction being reduced by a maximum of 25.2%, and the diameter of the wear marks being reduced by a maximum of 53.4%.","PeriodicalId":510857,"journal":{"name":"Surface Science and Technology","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s44251-025-00090-9.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147877858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It can also improve the wettability of diamond with other matrix materials, enhance interfacial bonding, and optimize the properties of composite materials. In this study, high-purity tungsten powder was treated, and a self-made coating material was used to coat a nano-tungsten layer on the diamond surface via diffusion coating. The phase, microstructure, and microscopic defects of the tungsten-coated diamond were characterized and analyzed. The results show that continuous and dense nano-coatings can be formed on the diamond surface through diffusion coating. The main phases of the coatings are W, W₂C, and WC, with the absolute contents of W₂C and WC increasing as the coating time increases. The relationship between coating thickness and coating time transitions from linear to nonlinear with increasing time. The diamond {111} surface typically forms a dense, continuous structure with triangular etched pits, while the {100} surface usually presents a granular junction with square etched pits and a higher degree of etching. Additionally, random, irregular etched pits are observed on the diamond surface. These findings are of great significance for improving diamond properties and are expected to guide the development of diamond surface metallization and the diamond composite material system.","PeriodicalId":510857,"journal":{"name":"Surface Science and Technology","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s44251-025-00083-8.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147332789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While substantial research has been devoted to understanding bulk charge generation and separation processes, the quantitative assessment of surface-reaching charges, which are crucial for driving redox reactions-remains a significant scientific challenge. In this review, we present the significant advancements achieved by our research group through the development and application of adsorbate (methanol) surface elementary reaction kinetic analysis method for quantifying surface-reaching photoholes in TiO 2 -based photocatalysts. We systematically discuss its the theoretical foundations of this methodology and demonstrate its applications across various photocatalytic materials. Furthermore, we emphasize the critical role of surface and interface engineering in photocatalyst design for enhancing the concentration of surface-reaching charges.
