Policymakers and practitioners have increasingly become interested in effective policies and strategies for facilitating social innovation to deliver sustainable development; however, a lack of coherent analytical framework persists. To address this gap, we propose the Social Innovation System framework, by adapting the Technological Innovation Systems approach widely used in innovation management and policy. Providing a holistic and comprehensive perspective to explore complex interactions among different actors and institutions involved in social innovation, our framework allows more systematic understanding of the development of social entrepreneurship and relevant ecosystems. We employ this framework to analyze social innovation ecosystems in South Korea and Singapore. The results indicate systemic challenges to overcome owing to the collective and interactive nature of social innovation.","PeriodicalId":510523,"journal":{"name":"Sustainable Development","volume":" 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141822720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While structural adjustments away from carbon‐intensive industries can reduce emissions, such transformations must be underpinned by democratic governance and equitable clean energy access (energy justice). Disappointedly, the interplay among structural change, democracy, and energy justice in mitigating emissions has received insufficient attention. This study examines this nexus among 15 West African countries using the Driscoll–Kraay standard estimator. Our findings indicate that democracy, structural adjustment, and energy justice significantly reduce carbon emissions, while globalization, urbanization, and international trade increase it. We recommend that governments in these nations should promote economic diversification into low‐carbon industries, ensure energy justice through electrification and clean cooking initiatives, enhance transparency and public participation in environmental decision‐making, and facilitate multi‐stakeholder dialogs on sustainable practices.","PeriodicalId":510523,"journal":{"name":"Sustainable Development","volume":" 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141825797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both geography and politics combine in diverse ways to form differential lived‐in experiences for communities across the globe in terms of where they stand in the world map of water crises and sustainable development. This study used semiotics and post‐development theory to propose a nonarbitrary symbol of sustainable development and to analyse the relationship between Western science and non‐Western‐indigenous practices. The objective was to broaden our conception of science and development. The researcher adopted mixed methods approach, comprising survey and ethnography, to draw an anthropological account of Rüza, a traditional water management practice in Phek district of Nagaland, India. The study has tried to contribute to policy discourse on inclusive development by suggesting operationalization of sustainable science based on pluriversal knowledge systems.","PeriodicalId":510523,"journal":{"name":"Sustainable Development","volume":" 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141831142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous research has explored the antecedents of resilience from perspective of resources and capabilities, but there has been limited attention paid to strategic orientation, particularly sustainability orientation (SO). In light of the growing importance of sustainability in response to various social issues, this study investigates how SO in digital context can enhance firm resilience by driving digital business model innovation (DBMI). The study also examines the moderating effects of digital orientation (DO) and environmental dynamism (ED) on the relationship between SO and DBMI based on contingency theory. We tested our hypothesis using survey data from 155 Chinese SMEs. The results show that: (i) SO can improve firm resilience, (ii) DBMI plays a mediating role between SO and resilience, and (iii) the interplay of SO and DO can create stronger DBMI, but the synergy between them will be weakened in more dynamic environment.","PeriodicalId":510523,"journal":{"name":"Sustainable Development","volume":" 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141828890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, little is known about the cause of the ongoing armed conflict in Southern Cameroon and its effects on the pace of sustainable development in Cameroon. This study seeks to close this gap by employing a causal‐process tracing methodology and trend analysis. The empirical results obtained suggest that there is no end to the conflict any time soon due to the divide between the Anglophone political elite, lack of international support, and repression from the government. In addition, the conflict has very minimal quantitative significant impact on the pace of development in Cameroon. By empirically analyzing the case of Cameroon, the current study lends an understanding of the causes and effects of the conflict on sustainable development and further highlights the steps that are necessary to safeguard the socio‐economic well‐being of the masses.","PeriodicalId":510523,"journal":{"name":"Sustainable Development","volume":"27 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141272492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, how digital infrastructure, the material infrastructure that underpins digital technologies, shapes firms' green innovation remains uncertain. The uniqueness of this analysis lies in evaluating the causal implications of the Broadband China policy on corporate green innovation using a staggered difference‐in‐differences technique. Our study indicates that the Broadband China policy robustly boosts corporate green innovation. However, treatment impacts vary across calendar times, entry cohorts, and exposure durations, with most estimates exhibiting powerful and positive effects. Further analysis indicates that the Broadband China policy boosts green innovation indirectly through financialization by increasing corporate operating income and total asset turnover while minimizing management operating costs. The findings endorse that the corporate green innovation process requires more long‐term, stable, and continuous financial support due to its high information asymmetry, high‐risk nature, and long‐term investment cycle.","PeriodicalId":510523,"journal":{"name":"Sustainable Development","volume":"30 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141279420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the same cannot be said for developing countries, particularly in Africa, where the knowledge and awareness of natural solutions are low, and research on their application within the built environment is scant. Using a sciento‐metric and narrative review of published literature, this paper makes a case for research exploration on nature‐based solutions for a sustainable built environment in Africa. The findings revealed an opportunity for significant research contributions on nature‐based solutions in addressing flood risk management, climate change and urban planning, water quality and carbon emission, sustainable development, and green infrastructure and urban development. These areas are the critical focus of past studies explored. Also, the findings offer guidance for further studies to be conducted in less explored areas, such as carbon sequestration, greenhouse gases, energy utilisation, indoor comfort, and numeric models for using nature‐based solutions within the African context. The findings of the study offer an excellent theoretical background to direct researchers and practitioners who seek to attain and promote sustainable built environments through nature‐based solutions, especially in Africa.","PeriodicalId":510523,"journal":{"name":"Sustainable Development","volume":"9 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139959494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study focuses on specific startups in the foodtech sector in the Brazilian context, offering a unique perspective on a relevant niche. It explores how I4.0 technologies are fundamental in the practices adopted by foodtechs, indicating an innovative approach aligned with technological trends. About the methodology, it was carried out through interviews with nine managers of foodtechs. Other sources of data collect have been used, such as reports, presentations, folders, products catalogs, consultations in companies sites, Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin, and videos on the Companies YouTube. The results show that: (i) the I4.0 technologies are fundamental in the practices adopted by the foodtechs; (ii) the CE being internalized, supported by I4.0; (iii) CE is made possible by gathering synergy and co‐participation from stakeholders which are strategic and relevant to foodtechs; (iv) innovation factor is present in the adoption of I4.0, in the operationalization of the practices of CE and in the production of synergy among the stakeholders relevant to foodtechs; (v) the creation of new markets is also a consequence of the adoption of I4.0, the adoption of CE and the articulation of stakeholders in the context analyzed; (vi) virtualize and regenerate are the most strengthened strategies at the sphere of the analyzed foodtechs; (vii) IoT, Big Data and integration of ubiquitous and intelligent components in supply chains are the highlighted artifacts in the making of CE practices at foodtechs levels; (viii) foodtechs of food producers have shown a greater synergy and articulation of stakeholders to the success of CE supported by I4.0. The contribution of the study is associated to the legitimation of I4.0 technologies as motivators to the adoption of CE and the engagement of stakeholders to successful circular business models. The study used a qualitative approach and collected data through interviews with nine startups in Brazil. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data. The limitations of the study include the small sample size and the focus on startups in one country. Future research should aim to explore the integration of I4.0 and the CE in larger samples, across multiple countries, and involving different types of organizations. Additionally, the study highlights the need for government support for startups in the form of funding, incentives, and regulations, as well as the importance of education and training programs to develop skills related to I4.0 and the CE. Overall, the research objectives are to understand the opportunities and challenges of I4.0 and CE integration in startups and to provide insights for policymakers and practitioners on how to foster sustainable business practices. The country has in recent years, implemented several programs to combat unemployment and the precariousness of youth employment in the labor market. However, the results of these programs are to date hardly perceptible. The objective of this work is to assess the impact of employment support programs on the quality of youth employment. We provide empirical evidence of the effect of the apprenticeship program implemented by the National State‐Employer Convention in facilitating youth access to quality employment. Job quality is determined using an index that captures multiple wage and non‐wage dimensions of job quality. Using survey data on the improvement of employment policies from 2746 individuals, we use the endogenous switching regression method and the propensity score matching method to assess and compare the impact of the apprenticeship program on the quality of jobs held by young men and women. The results show that the apprenticeship program has a positive and significant impact on job quality. Indeed, we find that the quality of employment is better for young men and women who benefited from the internship program than for those who did not. We find, however, that there is a difference in job quality between males and females who received the program.
