The zoonotic potential of RVA has been reported and raises major concerns, especially in animal-human interface settings. The study aimed to characterize and investigate the genetic diversity among RVAs in dogs and cats in Thailand. We collected 572 rectal swab samples from dogs and cats in Bangkok animal hospitals from January 2020 to June 2021. The one-step RT-PCR assay detected RVAs in 1.92% (11/572) of the samples, with 2.75% (8/290) in dogs and 1.06% (3/282) in cats. Two canine RVA and one feline RVA were subjected to whole genome sequencing. Our results showed that all three viruses were identified as RVA genotype G3P[3]. The genetic constellation of RVAs is unique for different species. For canine RVAs is G3-P [3]-I3-R3-C3-M3-A9-N2-T3-E3-H6, while Feline RVA is G3-P [3]-I8-R3-C3-M3-A9-N3-T3-E3-H6. Notably, both canine and feline RVAs contained the AU-1 genetic constellation with multiple reassortments. The results of phylogenetic, genetic, and bootscan analyses showed that canine RVAs may have reassorted from dog, human, and cat RVAs. While feline RVA was closely related to RVAs in humans, bats, and simians. This study provided genetic characteristics and diversity of RVAs in dogs and cats and suggested possible multiple reassortments, suggesting the zoonotic potential of the viruses. Thus, public health awareness should be raised regarding the zoonotic potential of RVAs in dogs and cats. Further studies on RVAs on a larger scale in dogs and cats in Thailand are needed.","PeriodicalId":510340,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Veterinary Science","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141099181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms of PDCoV infection and the effects of PDCoV infection on host transcripts and metabolites remain incompletely understood.This study investigated a combined transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis of porcine intestinal epithelial cells (IPEC-J2) following PDCoV infection by LC/MS and RNA-seq techniques. A total of 1,401 differentially expressed genes and 254 differentially accumulated metabolites were detected in the comparison group of PDCoV-infected vs. mock-infected.We found that PDCoV infection regulates gene sets associated with multiple signaling pathways, including the neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, MAPK signaling pathway, chemokine signaling pathway, ras signaling pathway and so on. Besides, the metabolomic results showed that biosynthesis of cofactors, nucleotide metabolism, protein digestion and absorption, and biosynthesis of amino acid were involved in PDCoV infection. Moreover, integrated transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses revealed the involvement of ferroptosis in PDCoV infection, and exogenous addition of the ferroptosis activator erastin significantly inhibited PDCoV replication. Overall, these unique transcriptional and metabolic reprogramming features may provide a better understanding of PDCoV-infected IPEC-J2 cells and potential targets for antiviral treatment.","PeriodicalId":510340,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Veterinary Science","volume":"56 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141102205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients were randomly allocated to two groups: HFOT (HFOT group; two cats and four dogs) and COT (COT group; one cat and five dogs). HFOT and COT were started at the beginning of the bronchoscopy. HFOT was delivered with a gas flow rate of 1 L/kg/min at an FiO2 of 100% and a temperature of 34°C (pediatric mode) or 37°C (adult mode). COT was delivered through the working channel of the bronchoscope at a rate of 1.5 L/min. The safety and feasibility of HFOT were assessed, and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) was measured by pulse oximetry every 30 s throughout the procedure.HFOT was feasible and safe in both dogs and cats with no complications reported. While there was no significant difference in the number of desaturation episodes (SpO2 < 94%) between the two groups, none of the patients in the HFOT group experienced severe desaturation (SpO2 < 90%). In contrast, two patients in the COT group had an SpO2 < 90%. Mean SpO2 was significantly higher in the HFOT group compared to the COT group at T0 (98% ± 2% vs. 94 ± 2%), T0.5 (98% ± 2% vs. 94% ± 3%) and T1 (98% ± 2% vs. 94% ± 4%).To the authors’ knowledge, this is the largest study conducted to date using HFOT during bronchoscopy in dogs and cats. Our results suggest that HFOT is feasible and safe during bronchoscopy ± BAL. Furthermore, HFOT may reduce the risk of desaturation episodes in dogs and cats undergoing bronchoscopy and BAL.","PeriodicalId":510340,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Veterinary Science","volume":"4 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141099075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Commercial tabletop platelet concentrating systems have recently become available to veterinarians, primarily directed towards uses associated with regenerative medicine. These systems could potentially be used to produce fresh concentrated platelets for use in transfusion medicine. This study evaluated the concentration, activation, and sterility of a double centrifugation platelet concentrate (PC) produced by a commercial benchtop system.Ten healthy dogs were studied. Whole blood was collected and mixed with ACD-A in a 1:7.6 ratio of ACD-A to whole blood. 12 mL of this mixture was processed into PC via single centrifugation, while 60 mL of the anticoagulated whole blood was processed via a commercial double centrifugation system. Both types of PC were evaluated for platelet concentration, CD62P expression with and without thrombin stimulation, and for sterility.Mean platelet count in the double centrifuged PC was 863 ± 352 × 103/μL, with very low white blood cell contamination (median of 0.47 × 103 leukocyte/μL (range 0.15–2.18 × 103/μL)). The double-centrifuged PC had similar baseline activation characteristics (as determined by P-selectin expression) as the single centrifuge PC (0.76% vs. 0.72% unstimulated, 30.5% vs. 34.9% stimulated, p = 0.432).The benchtop PC system studied here did not cause activation of platelets during production and produced a sterile product that can be further investigated as a source of fresh platelet concentrates for transfusion purposes.","PeriodicalId":510340,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Veterinary Science","volume":"7 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141099137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A neurological exam highlighted lameness in that limb, accompanied by pre-scapular swelling. Radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging detected an osseous structure in soft tissues close to the fifth cervical vertebra, and subsequent surgery uncovered adjacent cervical spinal nerve impingement. Histology of the bony structure revealed heterotopic ossification in paravertebral muscles. Mild bone re-formation at the operating site was detected after a 2-year period, but the patient was asymptomatic. This article reports the first case of heterotopic ossification with spinal nerve entrapment in a dog and adds a new differential diagnosis to the causes of neurogenic lameness in dogs.","PeriodicalId":510340,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Veterinary Science","volume":"24 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141107217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Regular monitoring of camel milk is crucial for consumer safety.A cross sectional study was conducted in Jigjiga city, Ethiopia to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of subclinical mastitis in she-camels. The study included 244 lactating she-camels from three privately-owned camel dairy farms, and a questionnaire survey was conducted with 60 camel owners.The overall prevalence of subclinical mastitis in she-camels was 10.6% (26/244), with no significant difference among the studied dairy farms. Risk factors that influenced the result of California Mastitis Test (CMT) included age and udder and leg hygiene. The study revealed that S. aureus was the most prevalent bacterium among the isolated bacteria, with a prevalence rate of 34.5%. This was followed by S. agalactiae, S. dysgalactiae, and Pasteurella multocida, with prevalence rates of 29.8, 19.4, and 16.2%, respectively. Among the isolated bacteria, 84.5% were sensitive to Erythromycin, 60% to Streptomycin, 44.7% to Oxytetracycline, and 36.7% to Tetracycline. Interviews with camel owners revealed that 66.7% used mixed herd grazing methods and reported feed shortage. Treatment practices for sick camels included modern veterinary drugs, traditional medicines, or a combination of both. The owners of camel dairy farms did not maintain proper hygiene practices during milking, such as not using soap when washing hands.Addressing camel mastitis necessitates access to alternative drugs, comprehensive herder training, and enhanced management practices.","PeriodicalId":510340,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Veterinary Science","volume":"6 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141105176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

S. gallinarum causes high morbidity and mortality in chickens and poses a significant burden and economic losses to the poultry industry in many developing countries. However, the virulence factors and mechanisms of S. gallinarum-induced systemic infection in chickens remain poorly understood. In this study, we constructed a Salmonella pathogenicity island-14 (SPI-14) mutant strain (mSPI-14) of S. gallinarum and evaluated the pathogenicity of mSPI-14 in the chicken systemic infection model. The mSPI-14 exhibited the same level of bacterial growth and morphological characteristics but significantly reduced resistance to bile acids compared with the wild-type (WT) strain in vitro. The virulence of mSPI-14 was significantly attenuated in the chicken oral infection model in vivo. Chickens infected with WT showed typical clinical symptoms of fowl typhoid, with all birds succumbing to the infection within 6 to 9 days post-inoculation, and substantial increases in bacterial counts and significant pathological changes in the liver and spleen were observed. In contrast, all mSPI-14-infected chickens survived, the bacterial counts in the organs were significantly lower, and no significant pathological changes were observed in the liver and spleen. The expression of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-12, CXCLi1, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interferon (IFN)-γ in the liver of mSPI-14-infected chickens were significantly lower than those in the WT-infected chickens. These results indicate that SPI-14 is a crucial virulence factor in systemic infection of chickens, and avirulent mSPI-14 could be used to develop a new attenuated live vaccine to prevent S. gallinarum infection in chickens.","PeriodicalId":510340,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Veterinary Science","volume":"52 36","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141103046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we performed 16S rRNA sequencing (16S rRNA-seq) and transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) to reveal the effects of cage rearing (CR) and floor rearing (FR) systems on the microbial composition and transcriptome of the goose ileum. Through 16S rRNA-seq, Linear Discriminant Analysis Effect Size (LEfSe) analysis identified 2 (hgcI_clade and Faecalibacterium) and 14 (Bacteroides, Proteiniphilum, Proteiniclasticum, etc.) differential microbiota in CR and FR, respectively. The rearing system influenced 4 pathways including biosynthesis of amino acids in ileal microbiota. Moreover, we identified 1,198 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the ileum mucosa, with 957 genes up-regulated in CR and 241 genes up-regulated in FR. In CR, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis revealed the significant enrichment (p < 0.05) of 28 KEGG pathways, most of which were associated with amino acid metabolism. In FR, up-regulated DEGs were mainly enriched in KEGG pathways associated with cellular processes, including apoptosis, necroptosis, and cellular senescence. Spearman correlation analysis of differential microbiota and amino acid metabolism-related DEGs in CR showed a significant positive correlation. Additionally, differential microbiota of FR, Phascolarctobacterium and Sutterella, were positively correlated with FGF10 (p < 0.05) and PIK3R1 (p < 0.01), respectively. In conclusion, there might be differences in ileal amino acid metabolism levels between CR and FR geese, and the observed increase in harmful bacterial species in FR might impact the activity of ileal cells.","PeriodicalId":510340,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Veterinary Science","volume":"23 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141108026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intra-and post-anesthetic complications, the recovery phase and mortality were recorded over a period of 7 days following general anesthesia. To compare the utility and predictive power of the 3 scores, data were analyzed using binominal logistic regression (p ≤ 0.05) and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. In addition, inter-observer reliability, speed, safety, ease of use and face validity of the ASA-PS-Equine and the 10-RS were analyzed based on five hypothetical patients.All scores showed statistically significant associations with various intra-anesthetic complications and parameters of the recovery phase. The discriminant ability of the scores related to the occurrence of intra-anesthetic (AUC = 0.6093–0.6701) and post-anesthetic (AUC = 0.5373–0.6194) complications was only low. The highest diagnostic accuracy for all scores was observed for overall mortality (AUC = 0.7526–0.7970), with the ASA-PS-Equine differentiating most precisely (AUC = 0.7970; 95% CI 0.7199–0.8741).
