Building on this breakthrough, our research endeavors to explore the effects of these waves on the weight and osmotic parameters of Brassica oleracea L. var. italic Plenck, specifically broccoli sprouts. These sprouts were subjected to various types of activated water infused with electromagnetic waves, with their weight measured in grams and their percentage composition analyzed. This study aims to elucidate the potential impact of electromagnetic waves on agricultural practices and nutritional outcomes. The findings present valuable insights into optimizing crop growth and enhancing nutritional value, thus holding promise for agricultural applications. In addition to nutritional aspects, contamination by pathogenic microorganisms poses a significant challenge in fruit and vegetable cultivation, particularly when organic fertilizers are employed. Mitigating microbial contamination in plant-based foods is paramount for preventing gastrointestinal and other infections, thereby safeguarding consumer health. In vitro studies were conducted to investigate the antimicrobial effects of electromagnetic waves across different frequencies. Water suspensions containing a density of 105 cells per milliliter of three microbial ATCC strains—Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans—were utilized. These suspensions were exposed to electromagnetic radiation within the frequency ranges of 350-600 Hz (designated as frequencies F1) and 20-40 kHz (designated as frequencies F2), as well as combinations of both F1 and F2 frequencies, each lasting 15 minutes. Results indicated that the tested strains exhibited heightened sensitivity to exposures at 350-600 Hz and 20-40 kHz, leading to a decrease in cell viability by approximately 70% compared to untreated controls.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":"20 16","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140673829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wall. ex Nees is an important medicinal plant of tropical Asia and has been used widely for a long time for different clinical ailments. Despite profuse flowering and a high percentage of fruit set,the number of seedlings in the natural population is the bare minimum. Knowledge regarding the seed ecology and seedling phenology of A. paniculata, is needed to formulate conservation strategies for the species. Therefore, a detailed study on seed ecology and seedling phenology has been conducted. During seed ecological studies,seed production, seed-set percentage, seed-ovule ratio, mechanism of seed dispersal, seed structure along with germination status, viability, dormancy and its breaking, and percentage of moisture content loss have been studied. Seeds exhibit some kind of dormancy [germination percentage (GP) = 28.51 ± 0.98, mean germination time (MGT) = 33.07± 0.89 days, and germination index (GI) = 0.73 ± 0.08] which can be effectively overcome through acid scarification using H2SO4 and hot water treatment. The species shows epigealphanerocotylar germination. The hypocotyls exhibit rapid growth, and cotyledons emerged at 7.52±0.27 TARA (Time After Radicle Appearance in days). Seedling is characterised by a thickened, hairy hypocotyl, a distinct collet, a pair of paracotyledons, and three pairs of eophylls in opposite decussate phyllotaxy. The studies on seed ecology and seedling phenology play a significant role in understanding how the shortening of the inception period enhances the germination status, and distinct seedling morphology provides the opportunity to formulate conservation strategies in their wild habitat.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":"85 s375","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140693864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Persicaria hydropiper (L.) H-Gross is known worldwide for its use in traditional medicine systems. It possesses numerous therapeutic properties. The present endeavor was taken up to analyze the phytochemical profile and antioxidant activity by DPPH assay of various extracts of Persicaria hydropiper leaves. The preliminary phytochemical screening of acetone, methanol, and aqueous extract of P. hydropiper leaves showed the presence of important phytochemicals such as phenols, tannins, flavonoids, glycosides, terpenoids, and alkaloids. The quantitative estimation revealed elevated amounts of total phenols, flavonoids, tannins, and total alkaloid content. The antioxidant activity also revealed higher radical scavenging activity by the extracts. The Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometry assay of methanol extract of P. hydropiper leaves detected and identified altogether 54 phytocompounds including 7 major compounds displaying higher peaks such as Andrographolide, 1H-cyclopropa[a] naphthalene, 1a,2,3,5.6,7a7b-octahydro-1,1,7,7a-tetramethyl-[1aR-(1a?,7?,7a?,7b?)-, Cis-Z alpha bisabolene epoxide, 1,8-cyclopentadecadiyne, Aromadendrene oxide (2), Bicyclo[4.1.0]heptane-3-cyclopropyl 7-hydroxymethyl, (cis) and Alpha-guanine. The concentration of phenols, flavonoids, and tannins revealed in the phytochemical profiling of three extracts might be responsible for the strong antioxidant activity of the extracts and the bioactive compounds identified in the GC-MS investigation exhibit important therapeutic properties required for the treatment of various human diseases. Thus, the medicinal use and properties of Persicaria hydropiper may be attributed to the presence of these phytochemical constituents. Further study of the compounds may provide scope for the production of novel drugs with increased efficacy and potency with the ability to cure harmful human diseases.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":" 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140692599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the remoteness and unavailability of modern medications, indigenous communities still use traditional healthcare practices to cure various diseases related to women. The specific objective of this study is to document the traditional ethno-gynecological knowledge in Neelum Alley. Field visits were conducted from April to November 2023 to gather data on medicinal plants used for gynecological problems. Both questionnaires and group discussions were used to collect the data. The gathered data was analyzed using a variety of quantitative metrics, such as use value (UV), and relative frequency citation (RFC). A total of 45 plant species belonging to 22 families were collected from the study area. Herbs made up the majority of the medicinal plants employed by indigenous populations (91.1%), whereas leaves, the most often used plant part, contributed 22.22%. Among medicinal plants, Geranium wallichianum had the highest use value (1.41), whereas Arnebia benthamii had the highest relative frequency citation (0.80). This study emphasizes how important it is to preserve traditional knowledge, pointing out that younger people are losing understanding due to a lack of interest. The documentation of traditional ethno-gynecological knowledge is crucial for the preservation, discovery of novel medications, and sustainable conservation of vulnerable medicinal flora.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":"107 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140695165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Apocynaceae family is highly valued for its medicinal properties, providing a rich source of drugs used in conventional and modern medicine. This family is a powerhouse of medicinal activity with 4600 species under 415 genera. Similarly, the Asteraceae family is renowned for its edible and medicinal weeds grown for over 3000 years, making it a well-known source of natural remedies. The family mainly contains taxa with inulin, a natural polysaccharide with pro-biotic properties. However, it has been recognized that many other bioactive compounds can be found within this family. With approximately 665 genera and 17500 species worldwide and over 1100 species and 100 genera in India alone, the Fabaceae family significantly contributes to the world's flora. The genera of this family are well known for producing a diverse range of phytochemicals, including 3-nitropropanoic acid, a potent mycotoxin. It is worth noting that almost every tribe in India, particularly Rajasthan, is aware of the therapeutic properties of various plants from these families. The arid state of India boasts rich territories that host an array of plant families. By delving into the scientific literature on the phytochemical properties and ethnobotanical uses of various plant families, valuable insights can be gained that could enable us to better understand and utilize these plants. This knowledge could lead to discoveries and innovations in plant-based medicine and agriculture.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":"5 4p2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140700701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Diabetes is often treated by modifying either glucose metabolism, lipids metabolism, or both. A direct correlation has been found between high levels of lipid peroxide in individuals with diabetes and lower intracellular antioxidant activity. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the effect of the aqueous extract of Kigelia africana fruit on the carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzyme, ?-amylase, and FeSO4-induced lipid peroxidation in the rat pancreas. The in vitro antioxidant potential, including assays for (1,1 diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant property (FRAP), nitric oxide (NO), hydroxyl (OH) scavenging, and Fe2+ chelating abilities, of the fruit extract was also evaluated. The effect of the fruit extract on the ?-amylase enzyme, and FeSO4-induced lipid peroxidation in the rat pancreas was also evaluated. K. africana at a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL and 1 mg/mL scavenged DPPH radicals, with the lower concentration showing significant differences compared to the control. The K. africana fruit extract reduced ferric compounds significantly compared to the standard. The OH* radical scavenging results revealed that all concentrations of K. africana fruit scavenged OH* radicals without significant differences compared to the control. K. africana fruit also chelated iron significantly compared to the control. The fruit extract inhibited iron-induced lipid peroxidation in the rat pancreas and ?-amylase activity compared to the control. K. africana fruit displayed promising potential in inhibiting ?-amylase activity and associated lipid peroxidation in diabetics. Therefore, it holds strong promise for use in diabetes treatment, validating its traditional use for managing the condition.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":"40 164","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140708552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the effects of various solvents used for extracting Camellia quephongensis flowers on phenolic content, antioxidative, and in vitro anti-inflammatory activities were assessed. The highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant properties were observed for the ethyl acetate extract. Catechin and epicatechin in the ethyl acetate extract showed the highest concentrations (17.23 ? 0.57 mg/g and 3.86 ? 0.42 mg/g, respectively) whereas epigallocatechin gallate had the highest concentration in methanol extract (10.66 ? 0.33 mg/g). Most of the other phenolics were also found at greater concentrations in the ethyl acetate extract in comparison to the other extracts. The results also demonstrated that ethyl acetate displayed the strongest antioxidant potential assessed by ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging assays. The albumin denaturation inhibition assay showed that the ethyl acetate extract had the greatest efficacy, followed by the ethanol and methanol extracts. Chlorophyll and carotenoids were found in smaller amounts compared to those in other Camellia species' leaves. These findings provide deeper insights into obtaining extracts with high levels of bioactive compounds, antioxidative potential, and anti-inflammatory effects from C. quephongensis.","PeriodicalId":509766,"journal":{"name":"Plant Science Today","volume":"456 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140719408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
