Hands, Rose Candela","doi":"10.1086/730463","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1086/730463","url":null,"abstract":"Goal 4 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) concerns inclusive, equitable quality education and promotion of lifelong learning opportunities for all. Libraries excel at early-education offerings and lifelong or recreational learning. However, less prevalent is support for the “middle”—adults with higher education aspirations. An educated workforce supports an information-resilient society, yet individuals in rural communities experience informational barriers and underrepresent degree holders. This research examines the provision of college planning programs and information in central Appalachia through a content analysis of 89 public library websites. Though the region enjoys a close-knit connectedness that could place libraries at the forefront of degree attainment and information resilience, findings suggest there is much room for improvement if the libraries aim to support goal 4 as related to postsecondary education. This research is relevant to audiences worldwide as postsecondary education has been shown to impact economic development in international lower-income contexts.","PeriodicalId":509655,"journal":{"name":"The Library Quarterly","volume":"31 1","pages":"238 - 252"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141701615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seventy-six participants shared their fiction search and reading experiences through an open-ended, free-writing-style online survey. Findings show that readers’ motivations (a sense of connection, comfort and safety, diverse selection, escapism, coping with stressful circumstances) and corresponding fiction elements (e.g., author’s background information, themes, mood) were closely related to the situations or contexts that readers experienced, especially so for stress stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.","PeriodicalId":509655,"journal":{"name":"The Library Quarterly","volume":"2020 35","pages":"253 - 271"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141706502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This rising tide of libraries’ community engagement is reflected in local news coverage about small and rural libraries and the role they play for the communities they serve. Even so, very little has been published about how libraries in rural areas are depicted in media coverage. This article develops a systematic discourse analysis of media coverage around libraries’ community engagement efforts to better understand the ways in which these key institutions are perceived and made meaningful for public audiences. In the corpus of news articles that we analyze, we identify two distinct discourses: the changing role of libraries and libraries as “safe spaces.” We discuss the significance of these discourses for the field of library studies as well as their implications for library practitioners.","PeriodicalId":509655,"journal":{"name":"The Library Quarterly","volume":"116 2","pages":"316 - 336"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141697219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Academic librarians from the United States and Canada were surveyed about their perceptions regarding the use of non-English resources during reference and instruction duties and the results are considered through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens. The authors explore literature regarding the dominance of the English language in higher education, scholarly communication, and academic publishing. Library literature is also reviewed, emphasizing reference and instruction services viewed through a critical librarianship or “critlib” lens. These perspectives are applied to the survey results with a discussion of the implications for academic reference and instruction librarians. The article concludes with suggestions for areas of future research.","PeriodicalId":509655,"journal":{"name":"The Library Quarterly","volume":"46 S1","pages":"296 - 315"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141711227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
