This is one of the goals related to sustainable development (SDGs) and therefore, the human perspective of urbanism is considered a future challenge in achieving (SDGs). The research aims to bridge the gap in previous studies and highlight the integration of human needs in plans for urban human cities. It also aims to create a conceptual framework that leads to a new theory of urban needs by bridging the knowledge gap in previous studies by considering modern numerical analysis tools, Thus, a bibliometric analysis based on the Biblioshiny and VOSviewer tools within the scope of human needs and urban cities promotion was accomplished. Next selecting evaluation criteria for human needs through a comparative critique of the most important theories of human needs. Then deducting the new theory of urban needs and linking it to the elements of urban composition. Results have reached a new framework that clarifies the human needs that need to be achieved and links them to the urban components to create an integrated urbanization that fulfills the desires of the population. This research serves as a reference for reevaluating urban directions and modern theories that aim to develop future cities. This paper explores the role of affordable housing in promoting the long-term sustainability of a community within healthy living conditions by closely examining the relationship between affordable housing, urban development policies, and sustainability, with the capital of Lebanon, Beirut, serving as a case study. The first part of the paper focuses on the current building laws issued in the official newspaper in 2004 using a content analysis methodology to demonstrate the impact of the changes in the laws on the new morphology and social fabric of the city through the creation of a favorable environment for big developers, wealthy property owners, and real estate agencies and, at the expense of old city residents and low-income families. The second part of the paper uses the qualitative analysis methodology to justify the presence of large unused stock of residential units in Beirut, referring to information from multiple data sources selected based on their applicability to sustainable development, affordable housing, and urban planning in areas related to the case study, Beirut. This part then investigates the potential presented by this stock of residential units in Beirut to increase the supply of affordable housing and foster a sustainable community. This paper argues that the promoted vertical expansion of the city weighs heavily on the environment and fails to provide a diverse mix of housing units, excluding a significant portion of the community from the city. However, residential developers continue to choose conventional high-carbon options such as natural gas boilers over net-zero compatible alternatives. This study explores how UK local authorities (LAs) within the English planning system can encourage residential developers to deploy LZC heating systems within their projects. We adopt an embedded case study design and analyse 30 residential project proposals within two LA areas. Our study examines local planning policies and interactions between developers and LA officers, along with the resultant outcomes, through documentary analysis and expert interviews with local stakeholders. We find that LAs can encourage developers to adopt LZC heating technologies above and beyond what is required nationally. The conditions for this to occur are (1) a planning policy which restricts allowable heating technology options, (2) empowering LA officers to enforce policies, (3) advice and support for developers to consider alternatives, and where necessary, (4) political backing to challenge unwilling developers. The study aims to assess the triad interaction between education, science, and business as a multiplier on the socio-economic development in the region. The study built a conceptual model of socio-economic space in the context of innovative urban development: the unity of education, science, and business. The statistical analysis allowed the author to substantiate the peculiarities of the local triad. The study revealed correlations in the influence of education, science, and business on changes in the regional system. The paper suggests that the triad of education, science, and business rests on territorial specifics. This feature is the determining factor of innovative development in the field of resort towns. The presented research uses the quantitatively measured influence of the triad as a multiplier by combining values of the unity of education, science, and business. The study found that the mentioned indicator reflects the wellbeing and quality of the labor resources in the region. On the one hand, the multiplicative influence of the triad is a guarantee of an increase in the wellbeing level within the borders of the region. On the other hand, it requires adaptation of the innovative development of resort towns to the current growth of the workforce and a decrease in innovative advantages on a local scale. The findings provide policymakers with significant indicators on the way to stabilizing the regional economy and effective decision-making. The study of the interaction between education, science, and business in the context of socioeconomic development can become a crucial tool for formulating policies aimed at stabilizing the region's economy and improving the quality of life of its residents, particularly in resort cities. However, their development is a complex socio-technical process. This study aims to (1) understand the thermal grid ecosystem’s development under changing political, economic and cultural frame conditions, (2) elicit actors’ perception of options for future development, and (3) identify concrete problem situations for the future development of thermal grids and describe how to address them.We draw on 18 semi-structured interviews with decision-makers in utilities, municipal administrations, planning and engineering companies and intermediary organizations.With increased strategic importance of thermal grids, the ecosystem has been in a phase of rapid growth and professionalization in the last 10–15 years. This is reflected in a rapid increase in the number of grids, but also in capability and capacity building and greater quality standards. This transformation has been supported by a resource pool (e.g., knowledge base, capacities and capabilities, networks or decision-support tools), built partly through the value network’s activities and partly through purposeful orchestration by associations, authorities, utilities and other actors. While policy developments, energy price fluctuations and changes in customer perceptions spurred demand, thermal grid development is limited by supply-side constraints, especially a skill shortage. Four interrelated problem situations were identified: (1) Municipalities lack the resources to manage the implementation of their energy strategies. (2) The modernization of thermal grids and integration of low-carbon heat sources entails high transaction costs. (3) The implementation of thermal grids is subject to delays and quality risks, with consequences for the timely achievement of decarbonization goals. (4) Customers face uncertainty on available options, as well as on the systemic impacts of their decisions.Based on current practices, suggestions by the interviewees, as well as a comparison with the international literature, we identify four development areas to address these problem situations: (1) Empower and support municipalities. (2) Manage the scarcity of qualified workforce. (3) Leverage digital technology for the planning, realization and operation of thermal grids. (4) Pilot technological and organizational innovations together. By employing a multi-criteria decision-making framework, we have synthesized data on land resources, stability, accessibility, construction costs, and proximity to conservation areas using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to prioritize these factors based on their importance for sustainable growth. Our analysis reveals that areas designated with grid values of 9 and 8, totaling 6312.33 square kilometers or 28.23% of the area studied, are most favorable for urban development. These sectors span the northern, central, and southern parts of NEOM, which are notable for their strategic location near future infrastructure and natural assets conducive to sustainable practices. This finding supports NEOM’s key initiatives such as “The Line,” “Oxagon,” and “TROJENA,” showcasing the model’s utility in directing urban development strategies. The study discusses the broader socio-economic and environmental ramifications of pinpointing areas suited and unsuited for development, underlining the model’s role in facilitating decision-making that aligns urban expansion with environmental stewardship. Furthermore, it advocates for leveraging development-restricted zones in conservation efforts and renewable energy ventures. Nevertheless, the study concedes certain limitations, such as the dependence on static datasets and inherent challenges related to the AHP method, including the presumption of criteria independence. Future research avenues are proposed, emphasizing the integration of dynamic data sources, comprehensive socio-cultural impact evaluations, and adopting flexible urban planning methodologies to refine the model’s precision and practicality. With user data in bulk, extracting useful information and addressing issues such as data sparsity and cold-start problems looming large in collaborative filtering become difficult. One of the plausible solutions is to incorporate contextual information into the recommendation process. In this article, we propose a Recency-based Spatio-Temporal Similarity Exploration (RSTSE) for POI recommendation that utilizes the recency-based trust estimation among the prospective neighbors of the target user. The trust level is categorized into two heads: direct trust, which can be extracted from the peer group information of the user, and indirect trust, which is measured based on venue popularity, temporal recency, radial proximity, and transitivity. The approach consists of two phases. In the incipient phase, POIs are extracted based on the preferences of potential neighbors, including the users who are recognized peers, the users with similar visiting histories in the spatial and temporal context, and the users with friend-of-friend relations. The telic phase involves Neural Collaborative Filtering (NCF) to capture the linear and non-linear user–POI interactions better. Strengthening the capacities for planning, managing, and developing cities is required to support an urban resilient transition in a context of high complexity and uncertainty, especially in the Global South. The main objective for this article is to investigate the differences in understanding of capacity building in urban climate resilience in the Global South through literature review. Specifically, this paper investigates the main approaches, aspects, components, and end users for capacity building in the frame of urban climate resilience. The article identifies a set of Capacity Building Parameters and Enabling Factors which are Purpose, Transformative Capacity, Multi-actor, Participation, Knowledge and Learning, Transdiciplinarity as well as Data and Finance. Adedotun","doi":"10.3389/frsc.2024.1384945","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3389/frsc.2024.1384945","url":null,"abstract":"There is a knowledge gap regarding the specific attributes (location-specific, environmental, and neighborhood) that impact land value, the relationship among these attributes, and the degree of impact on the land values in residential estates in Uyo, Nigeria. The three factors all combine to create a unique picture of a place, impacting its desirability and ultimately, its land value. This study explores the relationship between various land value attributes within specific residential estates (Ewet Housing Estate, Shelter Afrique Estate, and Akwa-Ima Estate) in Uyo. A questionnaire was designed and used to solicit data from the respondents living in the three estates with the aid of the purposive sampling technique. The findings revealed the following: Closeness to school is the location-specific attribute that contributes the most to land value, and closeness to recreational centers contributes the least. The presence of security and police stations had the most significant contribution to land value, and the presence of noise in the neighborhood had the least significant contribution. Peace, quiet, and beauty had the most significant contribution to land value, and the presence of lakes and water bodies in the environment contributed the least to land value. The factor analysis yielded two major factors for location-specific attributes: ‘transport’ and ‘place’. The factor analysis grouped the neighborhood attributes into two factors: ‘easily controlled’ and ‘not easily controlled’. All three attributes of land values are positively correlated with one another.
