A variable amplitude loading history, applied on a 2024‐T3 aluminum alloy reported in the literature, was processed using both rainflow cycle counting and spectral techniques to transform it into a distribution of simple processes with constant amplitudes, then the damage models were assessed under the new loading conditions. The results showed that the model by Khonsari, combined with the rainflow technique, exhibited the highest accuracy with regard to the referenced experimental results with a −0.67 standard deviation from the average data and a 16% error from the median. Therefore, it is possible to assess the fatigue damage accumulation in metallic materials under variable amplitude loading through a thermodynamic approach with models developed for constant amplitude loading.","PeriodicalId":509125,"journal":{"name":"Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures","volume":"46 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139781593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of high time investments and resulting increased costs, Lifetime Prediction Methods, which significantly reduce the amount of specimen, have already been developed. Within this paper, the Lifetime Prediction Method MiDAcLifeincr is presented, which enables a determination of a trend S‐N curve in the High‐Cycle‐Fatigue‐regime based on only one fatigue test and the combination of conventional fatigue testing with NDT‐related measurement techniques. The process‐orientated monitoring of the cyclic deformation behaviour provides the basis for the time‐ and cost‐effective provision of fatigue data. Compared with previous methods, the consideration of variable loading is an essential aspect of the research application. The test material is a 20MnMoNi5‐5 steel, the results of which are extended to include other steels for validation reasons.","PeriodicalId":509125,"journal":{"name":"Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures","volume":"126 15","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139780976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis revealed a direct linear correlation between the tensile strength and printing orientation, highlighting a decrease in tensile strength with an increase in orientation angle. Young's modulus of the printed material remained insensitive to the printing orientation. Conversely, fracture toughness demonstrated a distinct cubic polynomial relationship with the printing orientation. The equivalent material concept in conjunction with the maximum tangential stress criterion was used to predict the fracture behavior of SLA printed polymer. This research sheds light on the significant effect of printing orientation on the mechanical properties of SLA printed materials, offering pivotal insights for optimizing SLA printing across various applications and catalyzing progress in this research field.","PeriodicalId":509125,"journal":{"name":"Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures","volume":"133 46","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139780650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The creep damage evolution and damage mechanisms under test conditions were also analyzed. Then the data fitting performances were analyzed and compared from three aspects: the optimization‐seeking algorithm, the form of the objective function and the construction of the creep constitutive model. Finally, the chosen optimization algorithm combined with the proposed objective function and creep constitutive model resulted in 100% of the predicted values within the 3 times error band and 26.67% of the predicted values within the 1.5 times error band. This improves the prediction accuracy while reducing the effect of data overfitting.","PeriodicalId":509125,"journal":{"name":"Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures","volume":"34 24","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139781992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For composite materials, the conventional approach involves piecewise linear approximations of the self‐heating curve and the stress transition between the first and second regimes is arbitrarily associated with a fatigue lifetime equal to 106 cycles. This paper proposes a novel methodology to address these simplifications. First, a non‐linear viscoelastic model is used to describe the self‐heating curve. Based on the mechanisms established in the literature, a link is proposed between the dissipation and the fatigue limit. The load leading to a significant contribution of non‐linear mechanisms is associated with an infinite life time. It allows the identification of an – curve and prediction of fatigue behavior through a minimal number of tests. The comparison with fatigue results is satisfactory.","PeriodicalId":509125,"journal":{"name":"Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures","volume":"26 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139849957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fully reversed bending fatigue tests are conducted on ASTM A1008 specimens having surface roughness asperities ranging from mirror finish (Ra = 0.05 μm) to coarse (Ra = 1.5 μm). Two polishing directions (i.e., orientations) are examined. For the range of roughness values tested, the results suggest that polishing orientation has a strong influence on fatigue life. Specifically, within the range of surface roughness values tested, fatigue life was found to be relatively insensitive to surface roughness asperities when the roughness orientation was parallel to the direction of surface stress but sensitive to surface roughness asperities when the orientation crossed the direction of surface stress. Results are generalized using the concept of fracture fatigue entropy (FFE). It is shown that, unlike fatigue life, FFE is independent of polishing orientation, a noteworthy result. To explain the behavior of FFE in relation to surface roughness asperities, a fatigue thermodynamics theory is presented that hypothesizes that all specimens of the same material fail at equivalent entropy levels.","PeriodicalId":509125,"journal":{"name":"Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures","volume":"70 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139853789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this study investigates the mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of thermally treated granite subjected to cyclic loading. First, the mechanical property variations of thermally treated granite under cyclic loading were studied through cyclic loading experiments. Subsequently, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was employed to examine the microstructure evolution of thermally treated granite under cyclic loading. Lastly, the effects of cyclic loading on maximum strain, Young's modulus, pore size distribution, and porosity of thermally treated granite were discussed. Results indicate that at the same number of cycles, maximum strain increases with increasing temperature, while Young's modulus decreases. For granite subjected to the same thermal treatment, the maximum strain increases as the cyclic number increases, while Young's modulus decreases. Concurrently, porosity and fractal dimension initially decrease and then increase with a rising number of cycles.","PeriodicalId":509125,"journal":{"name":"Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures","volume":"32 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139862467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The alloy experiences an abrupt drop in fatigue life within a narrow domain of 2.5–5 MPa near its fatigue strength at 320 MPa. Electron microscopy and diffraction techniques were employed to thoroughly analyze the nominal fatigue damage. The characterization revealed the significance of precipitation of secondary phases M23C6, Ti (C, N), and γ′ phase in dictating the HCF strength of the alloy. Cyclic loading at high temperature causes γ‐matrix hardening and secondary phase precipitation synergistically strengthening the material beyond its yield strength. Conjunctively, dynamic strain aging was also seen to play a major role in the evolution of fatigue damage. The work highlights the collective contribution of γ′‐phase precipitation, carbides, and dynamic strain aging and their influence on the HCF behavior of alloy 617M.","PeriodicalId":509125,"journal":{"name":"Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures","volume":"62 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139801481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wall‐shaped parts were produced according to different process parameters, namely the wire feed speed and voltage–current combinations, leading to different energy inputs. The parts were characterized in terms of surface morphology, microhardness, microstructure, tensile properties, and fatigue crack growth. The results suggested that the investigated deposition parameters led to similar results. Moreover, the mechanical and fatigue crack growth behavior was in line with parts of the same alloy produced through other manufacturing routes, whereas the microstructure type was the result of the fast cooling of the molten material. Finally, considering the simple system adopted to avoid oxidation during the deposition stage, the results suggested that CMT is a promising manufacturing technique for titanium alloy semifinished parts.","PeriodicalId":509125,"journal":{"name":"Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures","volume":"18 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139801866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
