In the severe stage, CKD patients require long-term hemodialysis (HD) treatment and rely on family caregivers for support. Caregivers often experience mental health challenges, including anxiety and depression, which can impact their quality of life and patient outcomes.Objective: This study aimed to identify the anxiety and depression incidence in HD family caregivers at Soehadi Prijonegoro Regional Public Hospital (SPRPH), identify the risk factors associated with these conditions, and investigate the relationship between anxiety and depressionMethods: A cross-sectional analysis was carried out at the Hemodialysis Department from November 2022 to February 2023. Caregivers accompanying CKD patients undergoing HD participated voluntarily. Anxiety and depression levels were evaluated using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D). Results: Out of 106 participants, 66% were female. Most caregivers (99%) experienced anxiety, with 91% classified as mild and 8% as mild to moderate. Depression was reported by 42%, with 2% experiencing mild to moderate symptoms. Spearman’s analysis revealed a significant correlation between anxiety and depression (p=0.000). No specific caregiver characteristics were found to be associated with anxiety or depression.Conclusion: Family caregivers of HD patients demonstrated a high incidence of anxiety and a lower prevalence of depression. Anxiety levels were correlated with depression levels. We did not identify specific risk factors for these mental health conditions among caregivers. These findings emphasize the need for mental health screening and appropriate management to improve the quality of life for HD family caregivers.","PeriodicalId":508182,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Kedokteran dan Kesehatan Indonesia","volume":" 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139138442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although smartphones have many benefits, prolonged use causes various visual disorders, of which transient smartphone blindness (TSB) is one of the most important concerns. This study aims to analyse the phenomenon of TSB and explore its etiology, pathophysiology, symptoms, and examination to determine the diagnosis and management. Transient smartphone blindness is a new physiologic phenomenon caused by exposure to a certain level of smartphone bright light and the body posture of the smartphone user. It leads to the use of monocular vision to stare at the smartphone. By exploring recent literature, this study found that patients with TSB experienced retinal photopigment bleaching, which decreased light sensitivity. Typically, the sensitivity returned physiologically after several minutes. Patients with this blindness showed several symptoms. For example, they perceived shapes, outlines, or figures during the blackout. The diagnosis of TSB should be primarily based on a detailed history of smartphone use, with the differential diagnosis based on circumstance or occurrence. This diagnosis is useful to distinguish it from transient ischemic attack (TIA). Transient smartphone blindness is a basic monocular transient loss that does not require therapy or drugs. However, it was found that the reassurance of patients’ condition and suggestions on smartphone use were sufficient for the intervention. With a limited scientific study of TSB, this review is the first to raise the discussion topic. It is expected to help physicians to diagnose TSB significantly. In addition, this study will enrich the literature, particularly on the scientific and clinical mechanisms of recognising TSB for clinical diagnosis and management.","PeriodicalId":508182,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Kedokteran dan Kesehatan Indonesia","volume":" 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139139250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the years, traditional therapeutic strategies, including the use of herbs, have been recognized. Marsilea crenata Presl. (MC), or a plant known for its phytoestrogen content, has shown biological activities similar to oestrogen. These activities comprise the reduction of serum cholesterol levels, thereby having potential roles in managing dyslipidaemia and its associated cardiovascular risks.Objective: This study aims to examine the effects of ethyl acetate extracts of MC leaves on the serum lipid profile of experimental rats with dyslipidaemia induced by high-fat diet (HFD). Methods: This study applied a pretest-post-test study design with control group, involving 30 rats which are divided into 5 treatment groups, namely N (normal), HFD, STA (Simvastatin), MC1, MC2, and MC3. Group N was only treated with standard feed, and the others received HFD on days 1-14. On the 15th – 28th day, the HFD group was treated with standard feed, and the STA group received simvastatin 0.36 mg/200 g BW/day. The groups of MC1, MC2, and MC3 were treated with oral MC extracts at 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBW, respectively. Their body weight was measured at the beginning of the study, as well as after 2 and 4 weeks. Subsequently, the experimental rats were fasted overnight on the 14th and 28th day. Their blood was collected on the 15th day (pre-test) and 29th day (post-test) to measure serum concentration of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) concentration was also calculated by using the Friedewald formula. Results: MC3 extracts significantly reduced the TC (-40.95 ± 1.77), TG (-46.12 ± 3.79), and LDL-c levels (-0.017 ± 0.010), and it also increased levels of HDL-c (11.28 ± 2.34) mg/dL in the HFD-induced rats.Conclusion: Ethyl acetate extracts of MC leaves could reduce risk factors for atherosclerosis by returning lipid profile of the dyslipidemic rats to normal conditions with an increased dose.","PeriodicalId":508182,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Kedokteran dan Kesehatan Indonesia","volume":" 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139141659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some examples of pesticides include fenthion, permethrin, and carbaryl. Recently, free fatty acid receptor 2 (FFAR2) was identified as having a critical function in preventing insulin resistance. Activation of FFAR2 will reduce fat accumulation and induce glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) secretion, which plays an important role in regulating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) prevention.Objective: This study aims to determine a comparison of the binding ability between fenthion, permethrin, and carbaryl to FFAR2 protein for predicting the mechanism of pesticide toxicity to T2DM through an in silico study.Methods: This is an exploratory bioinformatic study. The protein structure was FFAR2 receptor (UniProt: O15552), while the ligand was fenthion (PubChem CID: 3346), permethrin (PubChem CID: 40326), and carbaryl (PubChem CID: 6129). This molecular docking was conducted in October 2022 using Asus X202XE with Intel® Core™ i3-3217U CPU equipped with BIOVIA Discovery Studio, AutoDockTools, and AutoDock Vina. Results: The binding affinity values generated after docking between fenthion, permethrin, and carbaryl with FFAR2 indicate that the binding affinity comparison is permethrin < carbaryl < fenthion. This explains that permethrin could form a stronger bond with FFAR2 protein than other pesticides. However, the visualisation results of the form of bond interactions show that permethrin does not bind to the active site of FFAR2, so it could not be called an inhibitor. This is different from fenthion and carbaryl, which could bind to several amino acid residues on the active site of FFAR2 and have the potential to become inhibitors.Conclusion: Carbaryl is a pesticide with the strongest FFAR2 inhibitor. Carbaryl could cause type 2 DM through its inhibitory pathway to FFAR2.","PeriodicalId":508182,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Kedokteran dan Kesehatan Indonesia","volume":"106 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139164061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cancer is the second cause of death worldwide, with chemotherapy as the primary treatment. There is growing interest in exploring phytochemicals found in noni plants such as anthraquinones, chitosan, phenols, and flavonoids. These antioxidant compounds hold potential as alternative treatments for cancer. This study explores the active compounds in noni plants that exhibit anti-cancer properties. This study employed a scoping review approach. Previous original articles were retrieved from Scopus, Science Direct, ClinicalKey, Springer Link, and Google Scholar with keywords in Morinda citrifolia L., component, bioactive, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer. We included 34 articles that met the inclusion criteria. The findings of this study highlight the anti-cancer activity of several phytochemicals found in noni plants. Damnacanthal has been shown to reduce the number of MCF-7 cells. Nordamnacanthal inhibited the development of the H400 cell cycle by increasing the activity of Cytochrome C, Caspase-9, and Caspase 3/7 and induced the death of MDA-MB231 and MCF-7 cells. Chitosan nanoparticles can inhibit the growth of A549 cells. Scopoletin can inhibit cancer cell proliferation by inducing cells in the G0 / G1 and S phases. Epicatechin can inhibit the growth of PC-9 cells. Damnachanthal, nordamnacanthal, chitosan nanoparticles, scopoletin, and epicatechin are active compounds presented in noni plants that can act as anti-cancer.","PeriodicalId":508182,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Kedokteran dan Kesehatan Indonesia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139347397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, investigating the association between breastfeeding, complementary feeding history, and toddlers’ nutritional status is important.Objective: This study aims to assess the influence of exclusive breastfeeding and timely complementary feeding on the nutritional status of children under five.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a Public Health Centre (Puskesmas) in Medan, North Sumatera. Data regarding the toddlers’ height and weight were obtained through direct measurements, whereas information about breastfeeding and complementary feeding history was gathered through interviews with the toddlers’ mothers. Chi-square analysis was performed for statistical analysis.Results: The study involved 50 toddlers, 30 boys and 20 girls. Among them, 58% received both exclusive breastfeeding and timely complementary feeding, while 42% did not. Among toddlers who received exclusive breastfeeding and timely complementary feeding, 82.7% demonstrated normal nutritional status, whereas 10% experienced malnutrition. Conversely, in toddlers not given exclusive breastfeeding and timely complementary foods, only 38% had normal nutrition, with the remaining 62% facing malnutrition. There was an association between exclusive breastfeeding, timely complementary feeding, and toddlers’ nutritional status (P < 0.05). Toddlers receiving exclusive breastfeeding had 7.8 times higher odds of experiencing normal nutritional status compared to those without it. Similarly, toddlers exposed to timely complementary feeding had 4.3 times higher odds of experiencing normal nutrition.Conclusion: Exclusive breastfeeding and timely complementary feeding played an important role in the nutritional status of toddlers.","PeriodicalId":508182,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Kedokteran dan Kesehatan Indonesia","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139347282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The success of this procedure is highly dependent on selecting an appropriate method, either transcystic or transcoledocal. Intraoperative choledochoscopy proves its importance in evaluating the condition of the choledochal duct and sphincter of Oddi. In this case series, we report 2 cases of patients with complaints of right upper abdominal pain and jaundice. Both patients were diagnosed with multiple cholecysto-choledocholithiasis at Dr. Sardjito Hospital, Yogyakarta. The interventional measures applied to both patients were transcystic and transcoledocal exploration. In the first patient, the transcystic method was chosen because the cystic duct was widening up to 9 mm in diameter. While in the second patient, the transcoledocal method was taken because the diameter of the cystic duct was still within normal limits. The duration of surgery in transcystic surgery was shorter than in transcoledocal surgery, with a time ratio of 129 minutes versus 162 minutes. Postoperatively, both patients were discharged on the second day after the procedure, and both experienced recovery without any significant complications. Overall, LCBDE has been shown to be safe to perform. The one-stage surgical approach has been shown to reduce the risk of complications, cost, and duration of treatment required. The choice between the transcystic or transcoledocal method should be based on each patient’s clinical condition.","PeriodicalId":508182,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Kedokteran dan Kesehatan Indonesia","volume":"16 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139347497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
