Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of sugarcane bagasse, a byproduct of the sugarcane agro-industry, and its utility as a component in substrate formulations for producing Physalis peruviana seedlings at various concentrations. Five concentrations of sugarcane bagasse (0, 20, 40, 60, and 80%) were added to the substrate for growing P. peruviana seedlings in soil, along with an addition of 10% cured cattle manure. In the initial stage (from post-germination to pre-transplanting), the following traits were assessed: stem diameter (mm), number of leaves, percentage of emerged seedlings (%), and emergence speed index (ESI). In the second stage, following transplanting, measurements included height (cm), number of leaves, stem diameter (mm), substrate pH, root system length (cm), shoot fresh and dry weights (g), soil temperature (°C), and the Dickson quality index. The inclusion of sugarcane bagasse in the substrate was beneficial for germination and seedling emergence; however, it is not indicated for the development of P. peruviana seedlings. No significant differences were observed among the treatments concerning substrate temperature and the Dickson quality index.","PeriodicalId":506815,"journal":{"name":"REVISTA DE AGRICULTURA NEOTROPICAL","volume":"28 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141928423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the effects of different shading intensities and harvesting periods on the growth and yield of Brazilian spinach in a tropical lowland urban ecosystem. The investigation used a split-plot design, with different shading intensities (no-shading, 45%, 55%, and 80% shading) as the main plot and harvesting periods (every 2, 3, and 4 weeks) as the subplot. The results showed that Brazilian spinach growth was significantly enhanced under no-shading conditions compared to shading treatments. Furthermore, 80% shading negatively impacted plant growth during early stages, as evidenced by alterations in parameters including canopy area (26.47 cm2), diameter (7.98 cm), and index (0.52), as well as Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) values. This led to reduced branch elongation, marketable yield (14.76 g), and non-marketable yield (4.68), along with a decreased dry weight of stems (0.25 g), branches (0.40 g), leaves (0.85 g), and roots (0.44 g). However, marketable leaves from unshaded plants had higher carbon content (34.64%) and lower nitrogen content (2.83%). More frequent harvesting every 2 weeks elevated marketable yield (67.22 g) but suppressed the growth of stems (1.05 g), branches (4.39 g), and roots (1.73 g). Based on these observations, the cultivation of Brazilian spinach in unshaded areas with a biweekly harvesting routine was recommended","PeriodicalId":506815,"journal":{"name":"REVISTA DE AGRICULTURA NEOTROPICAL","volume":"108 17","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141352160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The monitoring of adult lepidopterans was also evaluated using Delta-type traps baited with the sexual pheromones of Spodoptera frugiperda (Bio Spodotera®), Helicoverpa armigera (Bio Helicoverpa®) and Chrysodeixis includens (Bio Pseudoplusia®). Incidence of caterpillars and stinkbugs in soybeans was weekly determined, both in the IPM area and in the farmer, area using the beat cloth method. Insecticide applications in the IPM area were carried out when pest population densities reached the control level, while in the area managed by the farmer, sprayings were carried out at his discretion. Based on the results obtained, we found that adoption of IPM enabled better control of the pests in soybeans, especially for stink bugs, and the number of insecticide applications in soybeans could be reduced, which provides economic and environmental benefits for the farmer. In addition, we found that the sexual pheromones of the three evaluated pest species are effective in capturing their moths.","PeriodicalId":506815,"journal":{"name":"REVISTA DE AGRICULTURA NEOTROPICAL","volume":"7 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141363290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present work aims at evaluating the effects of water deficit on the morphological and productive characteristics of Urochloa brizantha cultivars grown in Quartzarenic Neosol. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse under a completely randomized design with a 4×2 factorial arrangement, with four cultivars (Marandu, MG4, MG13 Braúna and MG5 Vitória), two water availability conditions (50% or 100% of field capacity) and six repetitions. Structural, morphogenic and productive variables were evaluated 15, 25 and 35 days after the beginning of treatment application. For all productive characteristics evaluated during 35 days of water stress, it was observed that a 50% reduction in water availability significantly (P<0.05) reduced total fresh and dry mass production and leaf production of Marandu, MG13 Braúna and MG5 Vitória. Except for MG13 Braúna, the leaf/stem ratio of these cultivars was impaired. Regardless of water availability, when comparing forages during 35 days, lower cumulative leaf length and higher fresh and dry mass production of stems were observed in the Marandu cultivar. Regarding the response of productive characteristics, the MG4 cultivar showed the best results under water deficit when grown in Quartzarenic Neosol.","PeriodicalId":506815,"journal":{"name":"REVISTA DE AGRICULTURA NEOTROPICAL","volume":"28 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140716269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve this, it is essential to identify sources of resistance that allow genetic parameters to be estimated, providing useful information for breeders. The genus Fusarium is recognized as one of the main responsible for causing significant damage and economic impacts on cassava plantations globally. The present study aimed to identify, in cassava genotypes, resistance levels to F. solani using the detached root inoculation methodology. The experiment was conducted in the laboratory, and evaluations were conducted every two days after inoculation. The experimental design adopted was completely randomized with three replications consisting of a cassava root disc with or without inoculation of pathogen spore suspension. We obtained genotypes grouped as moderately susceptible and extremely susceptible, using an easy-to-execute methodology in a controlled environment in this study.","PeriodicalId":506815,"journal":{"name":"REVISTA DE AGRICULTURA NEOTROPICAL","volume":"10 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140728482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was conducted at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa in a completely randomized design and aimed to evaluate the effects of osmopriming and its relationship with physical and physiological attributes of U. decumbens seeds subjected to water deficit. Seeds from ten lots were primed in H2O (0 MPa) and PEG (−0.8 MPa), KNO3 (0.2%), and SNP (0.10 mmol L−1) solutions for 24 hours. Unprimed seeds were used as control. The seeds were evaluated in two trials after osmopriming. Trial I consisted of the X-ray test to evaluate physical attributes and germination and vigor tests. In Trial II, the seeds were placed to germinate under favorable (0 MPa) and water deficit conditions (−0.2 MPa) to evaluate physiological attributes. In general, osmopriming of U. decumbens seeds assisted in increasing physical attributes such as area, gray scale, perimeter, and tissue density. Osmopriming does not contribute to the best physiological performance of U. decumbens seeds under ideal germination conditions (0 MPa). However, osmopriming with SNP (0.10 mmol L−1) and PEG (−0.8 MPa) for 24 hours contributes to the better physiological performance of seeds under water deficit.","PeriodicalId":506815,"journal":{"name":"REVISTA DE AGRICULTURA NEOTROPICAL","volume":"59 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140264710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Walker) and Benghal dayflower (Commelina benghalensis L.) are among the most challenging weeds to control in agricultural crops. However, synthetic auxins present a potential solution. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of auxin herbicides in controlling C. sumatrensis and C. benghalensis using two spray volumes and two types of nozzles: Turbo TeeJet® Induction (TTI) and Extended Range (XR). The research comprised four experiments conducted in a greenhouse in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, from November 2019 to January 2020. For C. sumatrensis, no significant differences were observed between treatments at both stages of development. Consequently, it was not possible to identify the most effective herbicide, volume, or application nozzle. However, all treatments were found to be effective by the end of the evaluations. In contrast, for C. benghalensis, 2,4-D demonstrated higher efficacy than dicamba, irrespective of the developmental stages. The reduction in spray volume from 200 to 140 L ha−1, and the use of the TTI nozzle did not impact the effectiveness of the herbicides. The stage of development did not influence the herbicide control. In this case, the target species was the predominant factor in determining the effectiveness of control.","PeriodicalId":506815,"journal":{"name":"REVISTA DE AGRICULTURA NEOTROPICAL","volume":"95 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140086919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
