Fourteen species of helminths (2 cestodes, 10 nematodes, 2 acanthocephalans) and 1 pentastome are reported, representing 14 new host records and 1 new geographic distribution record. No trematodes were found, and the salvaged tapeworms were morphologically unidentifiable. Capillaria colubra, at 63%, was the most prevalent helminth, followed by Strongyloides serpentis and immature physalopterid larvae, each at 29%. Two uncommon finds for North Carolina snakes were the pentastome, Porocephalus crotali, and the trichostrongylid nematode, Oswaldocruzia sp.","PeriodicalId":50655,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Parasitology","volume":"9 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135272663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These intrepid investigators voluntarily exposed themselves to infectious agents for reasons of expediency as well as ethics and watched themselves while disease developed. The risks of this research could be great. Claude H. Barlow, a missionary surgeon and parasitologist of the early 20th century, used this experimental technique on many occasions during a long career in helminthology. Dogs are the main host of T. gondii; however, little information is available on the cytokine expression profile in T. gondii–seropositive dogs. The present study aims to evaluate the levels of certain cytokines in serum collected from T. gondii–seropositive stray dogs. With a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit, we investigated the presence of antibodies for T. gondii in stray dogs in Hefei, Anhui, P. R. China, and found 26 of those tested were seropositive. For proinflammatory cytokines, higher levels of interleukin (IL)-6 were detected in the sera of T. gondii–seropositive dogs compared with seronegative dogs. Additionally, the concentration of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 in seropositive dogs was slightly lower.","PeriodicalId":50655,"journal":{"name":"Comparative Parasitology","volume":"266 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135100975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
