This study aims to systematically review and map the literature in publications on the theme of Animal Welfare in religious slaughter studies. This study used the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses) system in the process of screening articles that were the subject of research. From 375 halal research articles and slaughter rituals indexed by Scopus, 32 articles on animal welfare at the time of religious slaughter were selected and analyzed. The results showed the development of studies on Animal Welfare through the number of publications, authors, countries, fields of science, sources of publications, and articles cited. In this study, two classifications were found, namely, the method of slaughter using stunning and slaughter without prohibited stunning. The study with stunning examines the pain of slaughtered animals, the quality of meat produced at slaughter methods, and ethical considerations and practices of using animals in rituals. The study without stunning examines the effects that occur due to no stunning, the halal of the meat,  the treatment of animals during preslaughter without stunning, and stunning after the incision of the Neck Vessels. This study explores some of the latest research development lines from both classifications. This study is expected to be a reference by researchers with the theme of animal welfare when conducting new research on the development of topics on animal welfare during the religious slaughter process.","PeriodicalId":506389,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Behaviour and Biometeorology","volume":"139 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141682930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 160 adult three spot gourami (T. trichopterus) were examined, each measuring approximately 9.75±0.44 cm in total length. The study was performed in a circular tank 180 cm in diameter and 80 cm in height. A Yuasa NS YTZ5S 12-volt, 5 Ah battery served as the electricity source. Fish behavior was monitored using a high-definition video camera capable of capturing 1080 × 60 fps. The findings revealed that at a distance of 30 cm from the electrodes and within 2.35 seconds, the fish exhibited increased swimming speed; signs of distress, fin extension, mild fainting, and tension; a slightly bent body and dorsal fin; and gill valve movement. After 4.15 seconds, the fish exhibited a loss of balance, mouth protrusion, increased fin activity, and a decreased response to external stimuli. Between 5.80 and 8.25 seconds, the fish completely lost balance, became rigid and unresponsive, and exhibited minimal, weak movements. At 20 cm from the electrode, the fish showed signs of anxiety and fainted within 8.10 seconds. At 28.35 seconds, there was partial loss of balance, and between 36.25 and 44.44 seconds, a total loss of balance and near-fainting occurred. However, at 40 cm from the electrode, the fish showed no response due to the extremely weak electric current (0.00–0.91 Ah).","PeriodicalId":506389,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Behaviour and Biometeorology","volume":" 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139788496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concentrations of Cassia siamea, C. fistula, C. surattensis, and C. spectabilis extracts added to the TMR based on corn stover were 2 mg/mL. Every treatment was repeated three times. The variables observed were in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD); microbial protein synthesis (MPS); volatile fatty acid (VFA) content; acetate, propionate, and butyrate levels; gas production; methane; and populations of methanogen bacteria and protozoa. The study showed that the addition of Cassia spp. extract to TMR at a dose of 2 mg/mL increased (P <0.05) the IVDMD, IVOMD, N-NH3, and total bacterial population but decreased the total and partial VFA, methanogenic bacteria, and the number of protozoa. The addition of C. surattensis extract reduced methane emissions by 13.11% compared with those of the controls based on the percentage of total gas or 14.9% based on mL/g DOM (P <0.05). In conclusion, Cassia spp. extract is a potential agent for reducing methanogenesis in the rumen.","PeriodicalId":506389,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Behaviour and Biometeorology","volume":"53 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139849290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ten recently reproductive-managed ewes were randomly segregated into two groups. The control group (CG) was under outdoor conditions with shadow access, and the experimental group (EG) was under outdoor conditions without shadow access. Traits were measured for 16 days, and the environmental traits confirmed significant differences between groups, with an average temperature-humidity index (THI) of 68.64±1.46 for the CG and 72.98±3.17 for the EG, with a breach of five units between groups. The THI was subsequently used to evaluate the heat load. Respiratory frequency was the physiological variable that responded the most to heat stress. The rectal temperature of the sheep was greater in the experimental group than in the control group, indicating an increase in heat stress. The EG also presented higher heat emissions from body regions, which was associated with changes in core body temperature and blood flow at the body surface. Differences in hematological parameters, such as the erythrocyte count, mean corpuscular volume, and total plasma protein concentration, were found between the groups. Infrared thermography was found to be efficient for estimating heat stress in sheep species, and head temperature was found to be a reliable indicator of physiological thermal stress.","PeriodicalId":506389,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Behaviour and Biometeorology","volume":"78 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139804343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
