Firstly, description of five new species of the genus, viz. the Malagasy Fissidens arboricola Brugg.-Nann. and F. granulidens Brugg.-Nann., the Mauritian F. papillisetus Brugg.-Nann., the Tanzanian F. rotundifolius Brugg.-Nann. and the Brazilian F. pseudoscindulatus Brugg.-Nann. All five belong to F. subgen. Polypodiopsis (Müll. Hal.) Broth. sect. Antennidens (Müll.Hal.) Paris, are corticolous and have anomalous peristomes. Secondly, taxonomic studies revealed that F. subgen. Aloma (Kindb.) Pursell & Brugg.-Nann. is subsumed under F. subgen. Polypodiopsis (Müll.Hal.) Broth. and F. sect. Semilimbidium Müll.Hal. under sect. Antennidens (Müll.Hal.) Paris and their names are considered new synonyms of the names of the respective infrageneric taxa. Fissidens jonesii Bizot ex Pócs, previously considered conspecific with F. lagenarius Mitt. is re-instated as a good species, described, illustrated and compared to F. lagenarius. Thirdly, Fissidens lagenarius is newly recorded for the Republic of South Africa and its African distribution is amended and updated, with consideration of the revised taxonomic concept of F. jonesii.","PeriodicalId":50612,"journal":{"name":"Cryptogamie Bryologie","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81861426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seventeen belong to F. subgen. Polypodiopsis sect. Antennidens and one to F. subgen. Neoamblyothallia. Most of these peristomes are imperfect. Compared to their presumed ancestral types, they are shorter, narrower, stiffer, undivided, deeply divided or irregularly divided, and in having a reduced hygroscopic capacity. Other sporophytic traits frequently found together with these anomalous peristomes are: narrow, cylindrical capsules with narrow, oblong exothecial cells; short and often papillose setae; and short opercula. Based on literature a strong relation is demonstrated between a corticolous life-style and anomalous peristomes for F. subgen. Polypodiopsis and F. subgen. Neoamblyothallia, whereas in the type subgenus anomalous peristomes are often connected with an aquatic habitat.","PeriodicalId":50612,"journal":{"name":"Cryptogamie Bryologie","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88139375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A phylogenetic tree comprising 37 representatives of Fissidens Hedw. was constructed using plastid gene data (trnG and rps4). Specimens of F. flaccidus Mitt. and F. hornschuchii Mont. on the islands appeared to be genetically and morphologically similar to samples from the continent. Together these studies showed that the specimens identified as F. crispus Mont. from Fernando de Noronha differ from both those previously recorded on islands and those on the continent, leading us to describe a newly species. Hal. was discovered. The plants showed morphological affinities both to A. longifolium Herrnst. & Heyn and A. fontiquerianum Casas & Sérgio depending on the floras used for their identification which challenged their recognition as separate species. In order to solve this taxonomic dilemma, we conducted a detailed morphological characterization of the two species based on representative samples. The micromorphological study of vegetative, sporophytic and spore traits revealed the large overlap of range values between both species. Both species showed the characteristic combination of morphological characters, including the broadly incurved leaves with smooth cells and the 4-6 rows of inflated cells on the adaxial surface of nerve. Spore micromorphology revealed the same ornamentation pattern and the presence of 1-2 lamellar glomeruli on spore surface. Multivariate and ordination analyses based on quantitative traits did not reveal a significant separation among samples of the two species, thus opposing their recognition as separate species. As A. fontiquerianum has priority over A. longifolium, the latter is thus subsumed in the synonymy of A. fontiquerianum. The addition of new chorological data and amended taxonomy reveals that A. fontiquerianum has a distribution area extending from the Canary Islands to the eastern Mediterranean basin. However, the scattered pattern suggests its known distribution is largely incomplete because of the tiny size of the plants and their ephemeral nature.","PeriodicalId":50612,"journal":{"name":"Cryptogamie Bryologie","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2021-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84959336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, mosses have received little attention. We studied the floristic composition, diversity, and species richness of the moss community in the pine-oak forests of the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, Mexico. A comprehensive list of the species occurring in the region was made by reviewing herbarium databases and conducting fieldwork. We analyzed alpha and beta diversity, as well as community structure, based on 60 sampling sites. Our results show the occurrence of 339 species of mosses in the study area, distributed in 168 genera and 52 families. We found high α and β diversity values compared with other vegetation types in Mexico. Our study provides a more detailed portrait of the high moss diversity occurring in the region.","PeriodicalId":50612,"journal":{"name":"Cryptogamie Bryologie","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2021-11-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90378891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pedro II where he worked as director of the Imperial House of Parks and Gardens in the city of Rio de Janeiro until 1897. He is considered one of the greatest plant collectors of Brazil and collected numerous bryophytes. The bryoflora of the state of Rio de Janeiro is one of the richest in the country, but also includes the highest number of threatened species. Glaziou collected in Rio de Janeiro where the coverage of the Atlantic Forest suffered a great reduction and loss of biodiversity. The objectives of this work are to analyze the species registered by Glaziou, assess what percentage of the bryoflora was sampled at that time, re-collect and evaluate the conservation status of the species. Our results show that 86% of the species collected by Glaziou have been collected in the state Rio de Janeiro. 4% percent have been collected in the last 60 years, 10% has not been found in the last 100 years and two species remain only known from the original Glaziou collection (= type). Our fieldwork recorded 35% of the species in their original sites. Eighteen species are considered threatened taxa in the state of Rio de Janeiro, including 16 species that are critically threatened (CR), two threatened (EN), three of little concern (LC) and one of insufficient data (DD).","PeriodicalId":50612,"journal":{"name":"Cryptogamie Bryologie","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81886345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
