With this increase comes the potential for increased impacts, especially in rural communities promoting their mountain biking trail systems. We present the case of two such trails in Michigan, USA – The Dragon Trail and the DTE Energy Foundation Trail – to exemplify how trail and community managers discuss two areas of tourism impacts and their intersections: economics and equity. Major highlights include economic phrasings of immediate direct impacts and more diffuse community impacts; specifically, equity considerations of barriers to access and representation and safety, and their intersection when discussing local as well as tourist use of these trails. This case serves as insight for communities considering developing mountain biking tourism amenities and identities, as well as how the discussion on impacts may vary across contexts. © The Authors 2023","PeriodicalId":505928,"journal":{"name":"Tourism Cases","volume":"277 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139229441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposal placed a strategic emphasis on leveraging legacy to benefit local communities, particularly through the provision of affordable and social housing and sporting facilities in regional Victoria. The Games were to take place across five regional cities to showcase Victoria globally, while generating economic growth for the regional economies, creating local jobs and boosting inclusion and participation of regional communities. However, in July 2023, the Premier of Victoria announced the cancellation of the Games, primarily justified by the increase in the initial cost of running the event. This conceptual case study provides an analysis of the factors that influenced the cancellation and identifies several significant challenges that contributed to that outcome, including lack of infrastructure, logistical complexities, and budgetary constraints, as well as the intricate dynamics among these aspects. It also discusses the potential opportunities and challenges for the state of Victoria and its brand as a host of sporting events. © The Authors 2023","PeriodicalId":505928,"journal":{"name":"Tourism Cases","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139228891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It focuses primarily on aikido tourism and provides insights into strategies and initiatives that can be implemented to leverage the region’s unique cultural and sport-related heritage for tourism purposes. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of authenticity in sport tourism experiences, emphasising Tanabe’s role as the birthplace of aikido’s founder and the involvement of the sensei (instructor), and its possession of a rich historical background and competent guides/translators. These aspects ensure authentic and meaningful encounters with tourists. Additionally, this case study emphasises the significance of industry-government-academia collaboration in enhancing sustainable tourism development. Collaboration between the Japan Sports Agency, local tourism agencies, aikido practitioners, and the community demonstrates the value of leveraging resources and expertise to create meaningful tourism experiences. © The Author 2023","PeriodicalId":505928,"journal":{"name":"Tourism Cases","volume":"358 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139238254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Guided by Mr Joselito “Boboi” Costas, the Bojo community has created an award-winning ecotourism destination. The aim of this case study is to highlight how a community successfully employed tourism as a tool to mitigate various risks and to provide a much-needed extra source of income to the community. © The Authors 2023","PeriodicalId":505928,"journal":{"name":"Tourism Cases","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139256871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was inaugurated as a unifying component of the nation’s transportation infrastructure at the beginning of the 20th century, then reconstructed and transformed into a heritage tourism attraction in the early years of the 21st century. The reconstruction project, initiated in 2008 by controversial President Rafael Correa Delgado (2007–2017), restored a large portion of the original railway system for heritage and tourism purposes. Even though subsequent administrations have abandoned the project, the revitalization of the railroad system is considered to this day as one of the most emblematic successes of Correa’s tourism policy and a model for railway tourism. Based on ethnographic and bibliographic research conducted between 2014 and 2023, I discuss the successes and limitations of using railway heritage tourism to enforce political ideologies and nation-building.
